Sony or Panasonic camcorder?

c

Okay, so these are the camcorders I'm tossing up between at the moment:

Sony HDR-SR1

Sony HDR-PJ10E

or

Panasonic SDR-S50

Which of these would you recommend? And if none of them, could you suggest some others? I really wanted to get the Sony HDR-XR150 but it's been discontinued :(

Answer
I would recommend a Canon MiniDV tape camcorder. I would do this to save you disappointment you will have when you you take your new HD camcorder, shoot something moving and discover that all HD camcorder in the Consumer level, interpolate the video, making the video near impossible to edit and motion videos mostly unwatchable. When the HD camcorder interpolates the video, what it does is not good for editing, You see, if you used one of those camcorders to shoot a video, say it was 1000 frames long. Of those 1000 frames, 800 of them were not shot or recorded by the person holding the camcorder. Those 800 frames were made by electronic circuitry within the camcorder and the are throughout the video, like this - one frame from lens assembly, 7 or 8 from the electronics within the camcorder, one frame from lens assembly, 7 or 8 from the electronics within the camcorder, one frame from lens assembly, 7 or 8 from the electronics within the camcorder, one frame from lens assembly, 7 or 8 from the electronics within the camcorder, From front to end of the video. Then there is the issue of the Multi core computer with a big graphics and sound card that is needed to view, edit and work with HD video.

Good HD Panasonic camcorder?

Try to give a link to the camcorder and if you can find the camcorder on bhphotovideo.com and post that link. I am looking at around $500-900.

this is the camcorder page on panasonic's web page.
personally i don't like panasonic and id go for sony but your choice.
it really depends what you want the camera for. if you want to take pictures and videos of memories that you wont want to edit much or preferable at all then you should definately go for a minidisc camcorder or a dvd camcorder (they are the same except one has a standard size dvd and one has a minidisc) they have pretty much no difference except the actual camera can be smaller if you get a minidisc one. ok so if you want to edit your footage then id get a harddrive one. the reason for this is the discs in most of those cameras are too advanced for stndard editing programs (ive got one) and that makes EXTREMELY hard to find a program to edit with. but i do prefer the disc cameras and have found a program to edit them which i can give you the name of if you would like. also a little tip if you are looking at getting a disc one. if you are shotting takes on something turn the camera off between each one (im not sure if this is panasonicbut a lot do this). otherwise all the stopped and started takes go in one folder and that doesnt sit well with most editing programs where as if they are in different files then they are far easier to handle and to get the one you actually want rather than having them all run after one another without a break.
if you click the type of camera you want on this page then you will get many examples in your price range.
good luck and email me if you need help with something

Best camera for recording sports?

austin

I play soccer and box. I want to critique myself and Try to get better by watching myself and seeing my mistakes I make in the ring and on the field. What is a good camera under $300 that can record sports well and not get all blurry.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What camcorder is the better option for recording sport? The Panasonic NVGS85, Sony HC62E, Sony HC52? ?

Svenn L

I see that sony has got a 1/6" Mega Pixel CCD with Mega Pixel Engine and it says that the mega pixel engine will improve the quality.

What I need to know is will I see the difference between the 2 camcorder video quality if I just view them on a normal TV and Laptop.

Any help will be appreceiated!

Answer
They will all be about the same. The imaging chip size matters most when low-light video capture is attempted.

You did not tell us what sport or what the expected lighting is.

Learn to use the white balance feature.

All three camcorders are standard definition, miniDV tape based camcorders. All three camcorders are consumer grade and have small lenses and small imaging chips.

If you already have it, why not test it out and see for yourself. Its rather lame though, Only 3.3 megapixels means that your better off using your iphone camera.
From a pro point of view: The still capabilities are completely s**t.
From a consumer pov: Its fine if you dont have anything better..

HD Camcorder and software?

Becky

Okay, my family is considering a sony handycam HDR-SR7. We like the camera, but are wondering what kind of software to buy. we have windows XP and just need the software for storing and playing HD movies taken on the camcorder. We don't want to spend a fortune (like under $100) any ideas??
Ummm, I ment computer software that is used for editing/storing the movies we shoot. n ot software that comes with it.

Answer
Camcorder comes with software. You can also use Las Vegas Pro (HD) for editing. But I tell you, editing those HD movies is a a b*&^ch! - they get expanded to 25gb file for 1 hr, and unless you have a very fast comp and TERABYTES of spare HD space - you will not be a happy camper. And unless you own a BluRay writer, you end up watching regular quality DVDs.
I gave up after 2 movies, and bought a PS3! Now all I have to do it to stick the memory into PS3 and play it (or copy and play it). If you run out of space - you can connect external HD to it.
PS3 is the only convenient way to see great videos in true HD resolution without hassle.

And the difference in quality between HD and regular camcorders is like SD and HD programming - day and nite. It is worth every penny!

HD Camcorder or DSLR?

Heherson

Hi! I am interested to enter videography, and I also want to do photography. I am thinking to buy used devices for this, and I am choosing between Nikon D5100 ($500) and Sony XR150 ($300).

So here's the case, I am not rushing myself to buy a DSLR because I can still use my Sony H7 for photos. I want to do film like videos and experiment different settings. I do also want the XR150 because of 120GB memory that will allow me to record hours of video and of course longer battery life. But I also want to have a better quality photos. So my choices are;

1. Buy the Sony XR150 to record videos, and use my Sony H7 for a moment while I am saving money to buy used DSLR even without video capability like; Canon EOS 400D,T3, Nikon D5000, etc)
2. Buy the Nikon D5100 because it will give me better videos and better quality images. (will buy Canon EOS 600D if this is not available)

Which option should I choose? If you will suggest to choose number 1, what dslr would you suggest that is within my budget? And if you think there is another good HD camcorder within my budget, please let me know :)
Thank you!

And all DSLR cameras are famous for their 20 minute maximum video taking time before they overheat and are done for the day. Hotter the day, shorter the video taking time that is available also in effect.

Best video Quality to be had is by MiniDV tape camcorders, shooting DV and HDV video. To get a DSLR or HD camcorder that could shoot as good or better Quality Video, you could not obtain a camcorder or DSLR that could do for under $3500

Digital SLR Cameras?

Answer
Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera
http://astore.amazon.com/webfront-20/detail/B002JCSV5I

Product Description: Breathtaking digital SLR image quality and easy operation highlight the 10.2-megapixel D3000-Nikon's friendliest D-SLR ever. Compact and capable, the D3000 is compatible with a broad range of world-famous NIKKOR lenses and includes the versatile 3x, 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR with Silent-Wave Motor autofocusing and Nikon VR image stabilization to combat picture blur caused by camera shake for sharper handheld pictures. Special moments are captured faithfully at up to 3 frames-per-second and displayed on a bright, 3-inch LCD monitor. The D3000's split-second shutter response eliminates the annoyance of shutter lag. To further simplify picture-taking in special situations such as portraits, sports, landscapes, and more, the D3000 features icon-identified Scene Modes that deliver beautiful results automatically in otherwise complex situations. Additional Nikon technologies elevate picture quality and guard against picture-taking mistakes. Fast, accurate 11-point autofocus delivers razor sharpness. 3D Color Matrix Metering II and Nikon EXPEED image processing work with an exclusive Scene Recognition System for precise automatic exposures and rich, vivid color. Making the D3000 an even smarter choice are its exclusive Retouch functions for creative fun and the onboard Guide Mode that's ready to lend a reassuring hand to take the pictures you've always wanted.

Review: Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.

First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.

Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding indoor photographs. The bottom line is proper settings.

A basic fix is the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature located on the lens. This should be activated, especially indoors. A tripod will certainly help. In auto mode, just set the camera to night portrait and sit back and enjoy the rest of your flight.

Outdoor shots were vibrant, sharp and rich in color without editing. The onboard flash system was more than capable in meeting fill flash requirements. Without a doubt the overall performance of the camera, features and image quality is excellent.

With 10.2 megapixels to work with, I easily blew up a personal favorite my niece had taken to 16" x 20". Even though I don't see myself trading in my Nikon D300 for this model anytime soon, this camera is by far an upgrade over any of the souped up point and shoots out there.

What is the video technique where it progresses in slow motion and a series of stills are left in the wake?

themagicbi

It's usually found in sports highlights or nature documentaries. There will be a guy going for a dunk or something, and he freezes at several moments during the approach and that image stays in place while he progresses through the movement. I hope that makes sense...

Answer
stop motion action video clip, possibly edited after whole video is recorded, then effects are placed into video as stills captured and overlapped for the rest of clip, more like matrix, where still object is kept, but movie continues,
using programs like Adobe After Effects and other video editing plugins could do this,

Thank You Sir for your answer.. I really need a pro advice on this.. He3...
Well the thing that I'm considering is
1. Mobility. The thing is, My dad preaches in different places, so it's not my church. Thus I wud prefer a camcorder that's not too big for me to carry around.
2. quality. I tried with an old camcorder sx40 (if i'm not mistaken) and the video produces high noise and picture is not that "sharp" (even bellow vcd quality)

for the lightnig quality, I used it indoor. Sometimes the light is not too bright either.

the xr got 120 GB. And yes, I'll use tripod. For audio, I'd record separately from the audio mixers

Answer
The Sony "Handycam" series are consumer-grade camcorders. The HDR-XR500 is a consumer grade camcorder. In the high definition series, the camcorder model numbers start with "HDR". There are a couple of "prosumer" camcorders (HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000) that are the high-end of the HDR series.

The Sony "professional grade" camcorders that record DV/HDV format have a model number prefix that starts with HVR. The camcorders better than these are the SDCAM, HDCAM and XDCAM series camcorders.

Generally speaking internal hard disc drives are not used in professional grade camcorders. For the most part, AVCHD compression is not used in professional grade camcorders - too much compression, known issues with vibration and high altitude; poorly defined process flow - especially related to archiving and data recovery and difficulty/challenges with editing.

The Focus Enhancements FireStore series of external, specialized hard drives, can be used with camcorders equipped with a DV port.

Any camcorder can provide good video - if the camcorder is used in accordance with the camcorder's published specifications. In this case, the XR500 has medium sized lenses. Good lighting is an absolute must. We do not know what the lighting is like where you are planning to record...

You do know that there can be file size limitations with consumer grade internal hard drive camcorders... right? Since we do not know what you are planning to edit with and on, we do not know if this will cause you issues... Last time I checked, when you press record using a consumer-grade flash memory or hard disc drive camcorder, every 2 gig, a new file is created. Make a single video file using the video editor...

To answer your questions directly:
Subject question: No.
1) Probably not.
2) No.
3) No.

Be sure to plan on audio capture (mics or external audio field recorder), lights (if the venue is poorly lighted - especially indoors), tripod or other steadying devices and cases... Learn to use the camcorder's white balance. Besure your computer hardware (CPU, RAM hard drive space), operating system and video editor are capable of handling the video you are planninng to capture BEFORE you buy the camcorder. Or expect to be frustrated...

Best camcorder for under 500?

Emily

I would like a camcorder that has fairly nice picture quality. I don't mind if the camcorder has no sound or records in black and white. And I would like it to record for at least 40 minutes in a single take. Thank you.

Answer
Panasonic, Panasonic, Panasonic!

***And no, I am not a sales rep for Panasonic, I just believe they have the best products out there.***

If you want a serious camcorder not a piece of junk read this, but know that you will end up spending between $400-1000 for a "good" one.

***Remember, miniDV tape format is digital and any video you take with a miniDV camcorder you will be able to use on your computer (to edit and make movies), on your tv (to play back your video), and if you have a DVD recorder you will be able to make DVD's from the video you have on the tape and then the tape becomes reusable***

***I would recommend miniDV camcorders because for the price, what you can get is way better than what you can get with a DVD camcorder. And the tapes are pretty much comparable in price to the DVD's. The DVD camcorders are a newer technology and they haven't perfected everything yet. The only positive thing about the DVD camcorders is that you can get the video on your computer or on your DVR in a matter of seconds. With miniDV, it takes a little longer.***

Panasonic, Panasonic, Panasonic!

You should look for a camera that is similar to the one listed below. The Panasonic PV-GS300 is listed below and is a great camera for around $475. Other good Panasonic brand camcorders include the PV-GS320 and the PV-GS500 but the higher the model number, the higher the price.

â¢10x Optical Zoom and 700x Digital Zoom
â¢2.7â Widescreen LCD Display (123,000 pixels)
â¢3CCD (3 x 800,000 pixel, 1/6â CCD image sensors for best quality and clarity photos and video. The same kind of system used in professional broadcast cameras means crisp color reproduction, thanks to a separate CCD for reds, greens, and blues. (most camcorders just have 1CCD)
â¢Recording system NTSC
â¢SP and LP recording and playback modes (most MiniDV tapes are 60 minutes, but in LP you can record 90 minutes on these tapes)
â¢Video and Photos can be taken in 16:9 (widescreen) or 4:3 (regular)
â¢High-quality Lecia lens (37 mm)
â¢5 preprogrammed auto exposure modes for a variety of shooting options
â¢OIS (optical image stabilizerâ¦minimizes shake and vibration distortion) This is a helpful tool, but if you want still images use a tripod.
â¢Soft skin detail mode (softens details to reduce skin imperfections when shooting close-ups)
â¢MagicPix (allows full color recording in low light)
â¢1-touch navigation with easy joystick control
â¢3.1 MP photos in Photo Mode with build in flash that can be turned on/off. Photo size is determined by what mode you have the camcorder set at. (video/photo and 16:9/4:3) In Video mode, the photos are smaller and quality is not as good as taking a photo in Photo mode.
o.2 MP photo size is 640 x 360
o.3 MP photo size is 640 x 480
o1 MP photo size is 1280 x 960
o2 MP photo size is 1600 x 1200
o2.4 MP photo size is 2048 x 1152
o3.1 MP photo size is 2048 x 1512
â¢Min shutter speed is 1/30 sec
â¢Max shutter speed is 1/8000sec
â¢Built in Stereo Microphone
â¢Stores photos on SD Memory Card (slot located on bottom of camera)
â¢Stores video on MiniDV Digital Tapes
â¢USB 2.0 and Firewire IEEE 1394 compliant
â¢DV, AV, external mic, and USB ports (the included AV cable has RCA and S-Video outputs)
â¢PictBridge (direct printing from camcorder)
â¢Includes MotionDV and Quick Movie Magic software

Whatâs in the box?

â¢PV-GS300 Camcorder
â¢RCA/S-Video cable
â¢AC cable
â¢Battery and charger
â¢Remote control
â¢Hand and shoulder strap
â¢USB 2.0 cable
â¢Software

What you will need to purchase.

â¢MiniDV Digital Video Tapes. Most stores sell these tapes between $7-10.00/tape! Check out eBay for good deals on tapes...you can probably find them for around $3.00/tape.
â¢Carrying case (Circuit City and Best Buy have a good selection, but expect to spend about $20.00.)
â¢Firewire (DV) cable. You donât necessarily need this, but the quality is supposedly better when transferring tapes to DVD. I havenât noticed any difference between the two and I prefer to use the included RCA cables with my DVD Recorder. If you have a laptop or desktop that has a firewire port this will come in handy...but note, a firewire cable is NOT included on most camcorders. You do, however, get a usb 2.0 cable that works just fine. Check out www.accstation.com for cheap, but great quality firewire cables. And if you have windows xp, you can use Windows Movie Maker to edit your videos. You shouldn't need to purchase any extra software.)

Stores and Prices

www.jr.com had it for under $475.00 (including shipping). Definitely check out this site. They offer great customer service, competitive prices, and fast/cheap shipping. They are located in New York and are a very reliable, trustworthy store.

â¢Circuit Cityâ¦around $500.
â¢Best Buyâ¦around $500.

Panasonic makes the best. If I were you, before you make an expensive purchase, do some research...look at customer reviews at www.camcorderinfo.com, www.bestbuy.com, www.circuitcity.com, or at any other review website. Most of those people that answer reviews do it for your benefit...they let you know if it is worth spending $500-1000+ for a certain product.

I have owned a JVC (miniDV), Sony (miniDV, DVD, and hard drive), and Panasonic (miniDV and hard drive) camcorders and I have to say that the Panasonic are the best. They have the best quality...best design...are the easiest to use...and are more durable than JVC and Sony. I use them for my business, which is why I have used and tested so many different kinds.

***PLEASE...go to the stores and try them out...don't make a purchase online without actually holding one and testing out its functions.

***And also be careful...if you do a google search to try and find a store that sells the camcorder that you are looking for, for the cheapest price...do some research and check out that store before you make your purchase. There are many great deals out there, but at what cost? A lot of places will advertise a cheap price but then will try to get you to buy more equipment for your camcorder that should already be in the box! WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS! I can't stress that enough.

GOOD LUCK!

Fuji digital cameras entered the market in the late 90's. Started in Japan in 1934, Fuji has always tried to stay ahead of the pack. The history of this company is rather interesting so let us take a look at it.
Started in a small Japanese in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, the Fuji Film Co. Ltd was founded in the year 1934. At that time, no one could imagine that such a small camera making company would become a million dollar global name known all across the globe within a span of 50 years. Today, Fuji is known for its great digital cameras and innovative technology.
It took Fuji 35 years to come to the USA. In the US, Fuji again started small with the establishment of a six person office in the Empire State Building in New York City. Within a span of four years, in 1969, the company had expanded itself so fast that the
Morgan Guaranty Trust Company issued American Depository Receipts (ADRs) on Fuji Photo Film stock.

http://www.cameradollars.com/
http://www.easyphotobiz.com

In 1976, Fuji Film launched the world's first ISO 400 color print film. This was the fastest color still photo film present in the world during that time. Then, in 1980, Fuji launched the fastest color motion picture film - the A-250. After this, Fuji became the official sponsor of the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.
One of the biggest launches in camera history made by Fuji was the QuickSnap in the year 1986. The QuickSnap was a one-time-use camera and it became an instant hit in the market. Due to its usefulness, easy-to-use convenience and price, the QuickSnap became the market leader during its time. Improvising on the QuickSnap, Fuji introduced the world's first one-time use 35mm camera with a flash in the year 1988.
Fuji was not a company which could be left behind as far as digital technology and digital cameras was concerned. Even though Sony overtook Fuji in the race of introducing the first digital camera, Fuji gave the world the first digital camera with removable media in the year 1988.
Today, Fuji has firmly established itself in the digital revolution. It has continuously innovated itself and made several product launches such as the MX-700 in the year 1998, which was the world's smallest and lightest mega pixel digital camera at that time. Fuji has also made forays into digital printing technology.
Not only this, but Fuji is a conscientious of the environment as well. In the year 2000, Fuji made a $7.8 million contribution in the construction of the Fuji Film Giant Panda Conservation Habitat in Washington DC in order to bring two giant pandas from China to the USA.
From the NANO CUBIC Technology which allows digital videotapes to increase their recording capacity to 1000 two-hour movies in 2001 to the xD-Picture Card, which was the smallest storage media in the market in 2002; Fuji continues to introduce newer and newer digital technologies today. Some of the newest digital cameras introduced today are:

What is a good camera to start filming with?

Beaverboy

Hello, ever since I was a kid I always wanted to direct films. I am a natural storyteller, but when looking at universities/colleges for application requirements I saw that you need a portfolio of work. Unfortunately I haven't directed much because I really don't have the means to. What is a good model of Camera I can use to film movies? Thanks!

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Not to mention, but the computer you upload your HD files to jas to have at least a 1 GB video card and a separate Audio card that can support Direct X 9 technology, you normal every day computer has massive troubles with HD video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds

Compare quality on digital 8 sony camcorder and sony hard drive type camcorder?

ang

I currently have a sony digital 8 type camcorder, as well as canon sd400 camera which can take video. I like the idea and size of the current hard dirve camcorders, but quality of video is of utmost importance to me. How does the quality of video compare on these models? Thank you,

Angela.

Answer
since all digital video is compressed, the most accurate figure of merit for quality is the data rate, expressed in megabits per second. Your digital 8 camera has a data rate of 25 mbps, the canon sd400 in its best mode is 11 mbps. There are other differences, the digital 8 has stereo audio, the canon is mono. the compression scheme for digital 8 is DV, and for the canon is Motion-Jpeg (not as good). The pixels for DV (720 per line) converts to analog video much more precisely than the pixels for VGA (640) will. DV is interlaced, m-jpeg is not, resulting in superior fluid motion presentation.

Camcorder: Super 8, Digital 8... whats the difference?

FivePtsCal

I have a Super 8 camcorder (I know I know, it's old, I have a newer mini-DV that I normally use). My wife and my wedding was recorded by a friend and was given to us years ago-- on Digital 8 format. I didn't have anything to read it, until I found this old Super 8 camcorder.

****Playing the Digital 8 tape in my Super 8 camcorder produces a picture, but it's absolutely horrible quality. Do I need to get a Digital 8 camcorder to play these tapes correctly? Or is the tape itself messed up?

Answer
Basically... you will need a digital 8 camcorder to replay the digital 8 tape.... for best quality.. the digital 8 is a newer format.

If you had a super 8 or hi 8 tape. These can be played on a digital 8 camcorder. It just will not be in digital format....

I might see if you can take your tape to a store that may have a digital 8 camcorder to try.... You may want to ask the store personal as a courtesy. They might get a sale out of it. So they may comply. This way you can test to see if the tape is damaged or not. This will save you from purchasing a unit and then finding out that the tape is bad. Or see if a friend has one to borrow.

Good luck... you could also send it out to see if they can convert it over to a format you have or put on DVD....

GOOD UNDERWATER CAMERA?

Sunny

I want to get an underwater camera that can get roughed up a lot, stand being in a car in freezing temperatures all night, be dropped, etc, and be ok. I don't do any extreme sports, but whenever i go diving or kayaking or bouldering when hiking or something my little kodak easy share isn't really ideal. I also really want to be able to take underwater photos. I really like using zoom so a good zoom feature would be nice, but i take a lot of distance photos too and video, so 10+ MP. Price should be around $150-200.

I was looking at the Pentax Optio W90 12.1 Mp waterproof, but I want to know all options before i choose this one. It says shock proof to 4 feet but i have accidentally thrown cameras before. And stepped on them...

Thanks!!!!

Answer
I would consider Pentax Optio W90 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Pistachio Green)

Technical Details
Color: Pistachio Green | Size: One Size
12.1 megapixel CCD
720p high-definition video at 30 fps
Wide-angle 5x optical zoom (28?140mm equivalent)
2.7" LCD 16:9 display
Waterproof up to 20 ft

Whats a good waterproof camera?

Darlene

It needs to be digital, waterproof as in submerging fully underwater, and has the ability to hold a memory card.
I'm not looking for anything more than that, and I want to be able to buy it off amazon for no more than $100

Answer
How does "up to 140 feet under water", "accepts up to 32GB microSDHC" and "shoots both photos and videos" sound to you?

Looking for a best-value "sports camera", preferably waterproof.?

fhl_devils

I shoot Water Polo, so I need a camera with a high shutter speed and rapid/continuous shot (at least 3-4 per second). In Canada, Polo is an indoor sport, so it has to produce a quality picture under artificial light. Lastly, if it could be waterproof (or at minimum, strongly water resistant), that would be ideal.

And naturally, I want this as cheap as possible [;-)
I'm a coach, shooting this for things like player cards, pictures to sell and marketing. I'm no pro, and don't know much / anything about focal lengths, and definitely don't want to get into changing lenses. I'll be right at pool side, so there is some splash risk. If I could be in the water, that would be even better, but I have a camcorder for that - although it takes horrible stills.
A buddy got a Sony down in Vegas 3-4 years ago that does a solid job, and it cost him $350 at the time.

I'm not looking to make sports photography a career. My day-job is in Graphic Design, so once I have the picture, I can definitely take care of the rest of it. I'm bankrolling the entire club at my expense, so while I understand the passion and desire to accept nothing but the best from PhotogProfessionals - in this case, all I really need is "good enough to get the job done well".

Answer
Sorry to tell you, but what you want is not going to be inexpensive, certainly not cheap.

Cameras like the Nikon D300s and D3s are excellent when shooting under low light. using a fast lens will also help your cause, but again, not inexpensive. The Canon 7D or 1Ds, Mark II would work well too but do not have the low light performance of the Nikon's

How close are you going to be to the splashing water? I shoot swimming meets all the time using a 24-70 mm f/2.8 or 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens and never have to fear getting my camera or lens wet.

Where can i get underwater video or digital camera for only $50.00?

A good camcorder with tripod?

Shaun S

Anyone know of a good camcorder with tripod? I've seen some camcorders on Sony's online store, where reviews state they didn't work as advertised and such. On top of that, there was no mentioned of tripods. I'd like to be able to use a camcorder as a hand held device, but also so I can sit it on a tripod and record. I want to join the 'comedic internet reviewer' fad like the Nostalgia Critic, or Angry Video Game Nerd, but I don't know anything about camcorders, and now that taxes came in, I'd like to find one. Price range may not matter (though under $800ish at best). Any suggestions?

Answer
It would be rare to find any manufacturer or retailer packaging a camera and tripod together. There's such a big variety of tripods that it would be impossible to have an offer that suited everyone.

You should look at camcorders and check they have a tripod mount. This is the screw thread in the base of the camcorder for attaching a tripod. Most will have one. It's a standard size too so any tripod will fit. When you have found a camcorder you like then go look for a tripod that meets your needs and budget.

Tripods vary in quality, height and features. If all you need is something to lock the camera off at a fixed height and angle then a basic photography tripod will do. You can get a basic 47" aluminium tripod at Monoprice for under $15 + TAX + shipping. That's silly cheap but it will still do the basic job with most domestic camcorders. If you were also planning to do shooting that involved panning and tilts then you should spend more and get a heavier tripod (for stability) and one that includes a video head which means nice smooth movement.

Sound is the thing that everyone forgets when first getting in to video.

It's assumed that the camera's own mic will be good enough. They're okay for picking up general ambient sound, and the better cameras will try to record sound from the front. But when all is said and done the built-in camera mic is often too far away from the person speaking. Everything sounds like you're speaking in a bathroom. There's no bass and that makes the sound thin and hard. Watch enough Youtube videos and you'll soon spot the difference between clips with good and bad sound. The difference is often simply the mic.

Make sure you get a camcorder with a socket for an external mic. If you have been looking at Sony then the HDR-CX380 fits the bill.

As for an external mic, for the sort of work you'll be doing then I'd choose a shotgun mic such as the Audio Technica ATR6550 ($70) http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/a49c539ef22b0215/index.html#BVRRWidgetID Shotgun mics are what you often see in TV studios and on boom poles held by soundmen and on those news crew cameras. The pick-up is almost entirely from the front. The benefit with a mic like this is that you don't have to hold it close to your mouth to get good sound. It can be mounted on a mini tripod http://www.bestbuy.com/site/table-top-tripod-blue/1307080863.p?id=mp1307080863&skuId=1307080863&st=table%20top%20tripod&cp=1&lp=2#tab=overview so it's not so intrusive in shot. It will still pick up good bass to your voice and you won't have any handling noise or wind pop issues from "puh" and "buh" sounds. This means you're more likely to get a good recording first time.

The other tip is to set the camera to manual for the sound recording level. All camcorders have an AGC - Automatic Gain Control. This turns up the recording level when there's very little sound. The problem with AGC is that increasing the recording level also increases hiss and electrical noise. For pieces to camera it's better to set a manual recording level and leave it there. The sound will be more consistent and there won't be as much hiss.

DV Camcorder Tripod?

I need a decent (read good but not expensive) trip for my Sony DV camcorder.

Answer
Herews a full size version. Tripod connector spotson the camcorders are standardized.
