What is a good camcorder for recording sports like running/hurdling with little or no blur? Frames per second?

mike

I am a college track athlete who sprints and runs hurdles I really want 2 improve on my form and break down my races this year. Though I know a lot about hurdles I have no clue what 2 look for when it comes 2 camcorders. Help me please. Any suggestion is much appreciated.

Answer
High frame rate cameras or pro-grade cameras with "overcranking" capabilities are expensive - but it is possible to do.

A more cost-effective method is pretty much using any camcorder with the capability of increasing the shutter speed a lot - then using the video editor in your computer for slow-motion playback or frame-by frame playback in the computer or on the camera.

How are you expecting to position the camera, start recording and stop recording? I hope you have a "helper" do that for you.

I've recorded football games and basketball games using a shutter speed of 1/1000 second and there is very little/no blur when reviewing frame-by-frame. When the shutter speed is faster than this, the video image will darken because the shutter is not open long enough for the light to come in through the lens and get collected by the imaging chip(s).

Stay away from high compression video formats - like AVCHD. The video recorded by these hard drive, flash memory or DVD based camcorders is not so good because of the way they interpolate the information between frames. DV/HDV onto miniDV tape is most common in consumer camcorders (for standard definition, Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320 - among others; Canon ZR960... for high definition, that starts at the Canon HV40). DV/HDV format - whether to miniDV tape, flash memory (Panasonic AG-HVX200 redords to DVCPRO HD; Sony HVR-Z7U) or hard disc drive (any miniDV tape based camcorder compatible with a Focus Enhancements FireStore drive) should be fine.

The college I'm going to wants a soccer highlight video so I can get an athletic scholarship but I dont have one and my season ended. What do I do?

Answer
Yeah, try and ask your friends' parents and see if they have any recorded games you could borrow. If push comes to shove just head to the park and video tape yourself jogging, shooting perfect goals from the penalty box, doing ladder drills, etc. Also if the gym allows you to film inside (some do not) bring your camera and tape youself benching or doing some kind of weight activity. A highlight video should be dynamic and you shouldn't just limit your background to some boring green field and nets (but don't go overboard with different locations). Avoid heavy metal song tracks in there and use a really high quality camera to film, not just any old camcorder. Look nice for it but don't go overboard with makeup and also don't wear your team uniform throughout the entre video to make it seem like it was filmed over a span of a couple months. I reccomend wearing lots of Nike and Adidas shirts and shorts to look really cool and your best pair of cleats. Also don't wear too much of the colleges' logos because that will make you seem typical and not different than others. Good luck!

How can I connect my Sony camcorder to my mac computer?

When I connect my Sony Dcr-Trv11 camcorder to my mac via firewire, the mac does not recognize it. I have an imac osx tiger and imovie. I have found places online that say that this is possible, but I have had no luck yet. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Answer
The Sony DCR-TRV11 camcorder is miniDV tape based.

What are you expecing the Mac to do? Nothing will automatically "pop up".

Connecting a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port - with the camcorder in "Play" or "VCR" mode, launch iMovie,
Name the project,
select the video project destination folder,
select DV (presuming you captured the video in 4:3 standard definition mode - select DV widescreen if the video was captured in that mode.
Create.
The iMovie Import screen should appear.

You did not tell us which Mac. It is possible that the Firewire port is inactive. System Preferences: Network: Port Status. Be sure there is a check mark in the firewire box.

It is also possble that the firewire cable or the camcordeer's firewire port is bad.

What are the differences between video cameras used on documentaries and ones used in movies?

best video camera yahoo image

Corey

How come the ones used in movies have a much better detail...? I am interested in buying a video camera for a documentary and am on a budget.

Would like to buy the best choice.

Answer
Unfortunately, there is no way you are going to buy a camera used in a movie. This is why. Movies arent shot with video cameras, theyre shot with film, 35mm in fact. Now remember how much it cost to buy a roll of 24 exposure film? Movies shoot 24 frames per second, which means that they use millions of feet of film for an entire movie, equivalent to hundreds of thousands of dollars. And I forgot to mention that an average movie camera costs $100,000.

As for documentaries, some are shot on film as well, but most are shot on video. Even though they are shot on video, the cameras used still cost at the very least $3000 (for an xl2, or a DVX100b). If you have the money, great! go for one of those cams, because they are great cams. However, if not, plan on getting a minidv cam with 3ccds, as many manual functions as possible, optical stabilizer and zoom, and a mic and headphone port, at the very least. The cams that fit these specs are the pv-gs cams by panasonic. A pv-gs300 costs around $700 new, but you could get a gs400 used for that price as well. Cheaper ones start at around $300-400, so go to froogle and do a search for gs250,300, 400 any of these are good. Dont go for the gs500, its still pretty expensive, and the gs400 has more functions. There are other cams as well, but these are the only cams in the consumer range that have 3ccds and good manual functions for a cheap price. If you have slightly more money, you could try going for a used canon gl2 for $1500 off of eBay (i got mine for $1475 plus $30 shipping). I'm into filmmaking as well, so feel free to contact me at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com. Hope this helps!

What is the name of the long pole you can attach a video camera to and video a soccer game?

Ryan

I want to video my daughter's soccer matches and have seen parents bring a large (20 ft) pole and attach their video camera to the top of it. They can watch the game through an attached monitor at eye level.

Answer
Hi Ryan:

There's a commercial product (I'll poke around & update, since my brain can't recall the tradename â EDIT: "Hi-Pod" X1, X2, thru X6 â see below) exactly as you describe that's been used for a lot of red-carpet events, where there are a lot of standing crowds or fences that wouldn't allow a good shot with just a tripod. It's designed for lightweight cameras, and has a simple LCD monitor and LANC camera control. It uses a simple mechanical tilt (panning is by the obvious pole-twist movement).

The usual method the "pro's" use is called a "jib" (after the Nautical term, like many other stage/theatre terms) or a "crane". So if you Yahoo!Search or Google those terms, you'll find other products similar to a "mini-jib", the "Jimmy Jib", etc.

There's one product called the "PoleCam" (see URL: http://polecamusa.com/ for a photo), but it's not the vertical-pole model I refer to above. Another similar product is the Hague K1 "HandyJib" from the UK: http://www.b-hague.co.uk/Handyjib.htm

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

P.S. [UPDATE Edit] Thanks, new Y!A Contributor "Dave K."!
The Hi-Pod "X1-P" was the model I couldn't remember the name of. (They need to upgrade their MetaData on their site, 'cause thay didn't pop up in any of my Searches!)

What is the best semi profesional video camera?

good video camera for shooting sports image

Caleb

I am looking for a semi professional video camera that shoots 1080p HD. The two things it needs to have a mic input and either a built in memory or a SD card slot (preferably a SD card slot but not necessary). I would like it to be able to take both 30 fps and 60 (it would be nice but not necessary). I don't have a opinion as to what brand but it needs to be around the $1000 or less range.

Answer
semi professional, its a lot of perception, like is the glass half full or half empty. if a camera is not professional, then it is consumer grade, period. If you want to think that a consumer camera is "just like" a pro camera but costs less then that is your perception. but for a reality check, remember that's not true.

the first point is no professional camcorder uses SD cards for media. Those are ok for still shots, but they require super compression of video by a codec that does not hold up to professional use. And professional videographers shoot for the purpose of making money, not "prestige". They need to usually provide a client with a DVD of the finished work. The only consumer HD format that can make decent DVDs is the miniDV based HDV type which is not SD card or under $1000. When Sony invented AVCHD, it was never intended for pro use, but for people to show off home movies directly from the camera without editing. Same can be said for H.264 which is a public variant of Sony proprietary AVCHD. Having a mic input does not magically result in HiFi sound if the memory card based camcorder compresses the bejeebers out of the audio, and all do. Speaking of editing, AVCHD and H.264 have no support for timecode.

for the purpose of making DVDs, whether wedding/event, music video or action sport genres, the weapon of choice is miniDV. You can still get a consumer miniDV camera, the Canon ZR960 has a retail price way under $1000. It shoots in 16:9 so once it is on DVD, it will look better than any consumer SD card based HD camera.

I'm looking for anything that can record around 200 fps (or more) in HD . The quality doesn't have to be huge, as long as its not blurry or bad. If it also has an option for ever faster FPS in low quality thats great but not necessary. All I really need is a camera that can do slow motion in good quality.

60 gigs
has,picture camera option
good zoom sorta....25x
carl zeiss lens...ok i guess
touch screen user interface
comes with remote for distance one man recording(or whatever you would call it,im sleepy)

slow motion would be more of an editing software business, not important as a cam feature

i got it when it was slightly new, 300 dollars....its been a year since

What is the difference between NTSC and PAL formats for a digital hard drive camcorder?

drag0n

I am trying to buy a hard drive camcorder online, but the description says the camcorder is NTSC format. I thought digital camcorders were all formats, cant they be switched? Whats the difference? Does that mean I cant use it in a PAL country?
Thanks

Answer
NTSC is based on the 60 hertz AC frequency we use here.
PAL is based on the 50 hertz AC frequency used in Europe and elsewhere.

For a video recorder there is not much difference as far as the camera is concerned. What makes a difference is if you want to burn the video on to DVD and/or play back on different systems. There is a NTSC standard for 24.97 FPS for DVD usage. This is for Zone 0 compability. This is fine for computer playback, but can be a problem with some tabletop DVD players that are locked to a single zone.

In your computer you can change the format from NTSC to PAL with a video editor. It is not any automatic thing, you have to setup everything correctly.

Answer
It's a limitation of your camera's sensor. The GoPro HD Hero 2 is a camera that's really designed for extreme outdoor sports...mountain biking, snowboarding, skiing, etc. So, it performs best is daylight, where you have plenty of light. It's not really designed to be used indoors in low light where it performs quite poorly, as these reviews explain...

Answer
Definitely go with the GoPro HD Helmet Hero, its an absolutely great camera. I've used it and i loved it. Its basically for capturing videos, if thats what you want than there is no doubt this would be your best bet. It captures professional-grade full HD video up to 1080p, 60 frames per second option in 720p and WVGA resolutions provides liquid smooth slow motion playback, videos can be easily edited with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, industryâs widest angle (170º) and sharpest lens captures more of the scene and includes easy to apply mounts for attaching camera to virtually all helmets. What camcorder should I get for movies and commercials?

burgundygh

Im looking for a camcorder that is professional, HD, SD card, and something that has longevity. I dont want to make an investment and something better comes out. Ive heard of the RED cameras but I cant afford that. Ive looked at some DSLR's. What do you recommend for movies and commercials?

Answer
Take a look at the Canon XF100. As far as I have seen, it is the only Pro-camcorder at it's price to get a 50 mbps data rate. Everything else under about $5000 is getting half of that, making them little better than a good consumer twinkie-cam.

At $3300, the XF is not much more expensive than a 5DM2 with a good lens.

What is the best camera for recording videos?

Mike Lopez

A video camera that's under $200, can pause videos without stopping the whole video, and has a good grip. Must also have VERY good quality hd.

Answer
Hi Mike:

For your $200 budget, you are not going to have "very good quality HD", when you consider that pro video cameramen and TV stations spend $5000 to $10,000 (and more) for "good HD" equipment.

Unless you use a tape-based (miniDV cassette, for example) camcorder, there is no need for a "Pause" button, and most SD card storage models start a whole new video file when you start/stop the Record button.

Some SD card and HDD storage models have a "pre-record" function that actually saves several seconds of video from before you press Record. So, a "Pause" feature has no advantage.

Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Canon all make affordable models that sell in your price range. (See a typical B+H Photo listing of models on sale here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Camcorders/Ns/p_PRICE_2%7c0/ci/1871/pn/2/N/4294548093 )

Sony currently has some price promotions that stretch your shopping dollar ($50-$150 off certain models) that are in effect this month. (See the B+H Photo page for examples.)

If you prefer the "pistol grip style" camcorders (like the Sanyo/Panasonic "Xacti"/HX-WA series), look at a Panasonic HX-WA3 model ($198). Panasonic bought Sanyo, and rebranded the Xacti pistol grip line into their HX-WA series.

For palm-size camcorders, you can always buy an accessory grip handle that threads onto the bottom of the camcorder via the tripod socket.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

I have a DVD a friend of mine made... it is video he made with his digital video camera of some action sports. I want to post it on my website where people can see it. He created the DVD with a Apple... I have a PC. The DVD files I see are as follows:
VIDEO_TS.IFO 12KB
VIDEO_TS.MPEG 232KB
VIDEO_TS.BUP 12KB
VTS_01_0.IFO 22KB
VTS_01_0.MPEG 270KB

and last but not least...
VTS_01_1.MPEG 335,006KB -- I am pretty sure this is the video I want.

I know how to FTP and I have full access to a web server without any monthly bandwidth limitations... within reason of course.

Answer
well you can either upload the file and have a link to it on your site for download or you can show it on thei site by using the <embed> tag - checkout http://www.w3schools.org for more info on <embed>

Otherwise you might want to consider streaming the video- for this you will need streaming software. search "streaming video" on http://www.wikipedia.org for more info.

What video camera should I buy to record YouTube videos?

Quinn

I'm trying to get a video camera that would be good to upload vids to YouTube. Not that expensive, just good quality.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Q. I was thinking of buying a camcorder for Youtube videos. What is one that has high quality and works very well for the videos?

Answer
After much, much online research,I highly recommend this ...
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCR-HC52-Handycam-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B00123Q8VY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1248845070&sr=8-1&tag=aor-sale-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957

The overall positive reviews on this mini-dvd camera are warranted. This is a great little camera for the money that produces some very good video. I have a Panasonic DVX100B, and I initially purchased this camera as a low cost video deck alternative, so I wouldn't wear out the motor on the DVX while downloading video footage into my computer...and this camera serves that purpose very well. But, I found that this camera is just a fun overall camera to have just to shoot video on the run without the need to set up a bunch of other equipment.

I highly recommend this camera.

What webcam or camcorder is good to make youtube videos?

comando co

What I am wanting to know is what is are good brands and models of webcams and camcorders to make youtube videos with. I would like to get one of each but dont know really what a good webcam is.

Answer
There are lots of very good webcams out there if you don't buy the cheapest ones so I would probably recommend one of those. As the previous poster mentioned, Youtube videos aren't all that high of resolution, so I think a webcam would serve you perfectly fine as you don't need the higher resolution of a camcorder in my opinion, unless you have one lying around.

As for which would be good, Microsoft seems to have some good ones (there is one that has 3000 in its name...I think it is a pretty good one and isn't that expensive online) and Creative and Logitech also have good offerings. As long as it is a decent webcam, you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck to you!

Answer
I have several camcorders for different uses, including a $2500 Canon GL2. The camera I use most often, however, is a little Panasonic GS39 I found at Costco for "only" $239.00. It is a miniDV with all the necessary cables and accessories - battery, charger, a/v cables, etc. It is small, tough and lightweight and even has a built in LED light for shooting in the dark or low light. It has a nice wide screen flip out LCD, takes digital photographs to a SD card - wow, this is a fun camera to have!!! I highly recommend it.

good video camera for action sports image

Desertflow

Any video cameras that are literally like looking through an empty fram. Great color, hd, stability and crystal clear image?

Answer
the frame like quality you ask about is mainly a feature of digital video and not the camera. HD digital video displayed on LCD HDTV has eliminated visible scan structure, "dots", color smear and line wave that was typical of the VHS/CRT era. Any consumer HD camera makes a photo like picture, at least when not challenged by motion. For action sports and similar activity, cameras with a very high bit rate like HDV or AVCHD in the 24mbps mode are better. For proper reproduction of scenes with very high illumination contrast ratios, a 3 CCD camera works best.

What is a good multipurpose video camera?

I want to use it for recording action sports like the gopro, but also be able to use it as a dash cam while driving, and then be able to record quality videos of me having sex...any suggestions?

Answer
GoPro's fine... or a Contour.

Can you tell from an uploaded video what camera/video camcorder it came from?

*XoXo*

Lets say i upload a video of me online and someone likes the quality and decides they want to buy the camcorder/camera/cell phoe that i own. Could someone figure it out?
*cell phone
what about with the help of some special program, if any exist?

Answer
If they have access to the original video and if the source stores that data within the file then yes.
For example, most digital cameras include lots of metadata with the pictures (lense used, f-stop, zoom, etc.).
It is very easy for the camera to embed that information in a digital video file.

I want it to be under $400.
I need to be able to connect it to my computer so that I can edit the content.
I also want my final product to be stored on a dvd.

Things like good picture quality and user friendly controls would be great.

Please give recommendations for the right camcorder for me.

Thank you.

Answer
Look at Sanyo Xacti camcorders. The model of 2006 Xacti HD1 record HD Mpeg-4 movies at 1280 x 720 pixels and 30 fps working in the powerful 16:9 widescreen format. HD1 has effective sensor resolution in 5,100,000 pixels. It is based on a small body with dimensions: 80x119x36mm, weighs 210g and costs abt. $400. For more details look at my article: "12 main points for clever HD camcorder choosing: from Canon HV20 through Sony SR300E to Panasonic SD1" at: http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/11/12-main-points-for-clever-hd-camcorder.html

Kodak play sport or Sony bloggie MHS-cms5?

Sharda V

which camera is better for video quality and other things like batteries

Answer
Both cams are similar in specs, except the Kodak Sport is water proof and comes with a power charger. Some users prefer cams with a pistol-grip shape like the Bloggie. Both record video in HD and take stills at 5.3MP. The PlaySport just came on the market a few months ago and doesn't have a lot of user reviews. The Bloggie is fairly new as well. You decision will be a personal choice.
