What is the best smartphone that runs on Verizon Wireless?

I would use this to browse the web...a lot! So there would need to be a great display on it as well as good moblie web performance. I would also need a good keyboard and program to edit text (word, ect.) documents. Another thing I would need is a good video/mp3 player. I have an iPod right now so it would have to have all the functionality of that. A camera is not really essential, but I could use it. It needs to be a phone, duh. I would also need good email and AIM use of it, as well as text messenging. It would have to run on Verizon Wireless, because its the best carrier in my area. I was looking at a Blackberry Pearl, or Blackberry World, which seemed nice...but I still need to look around more. I know this is a lot to ask, but I basically need the most portable version of a computer/phone as it gets.

Answer
Despite this phone's diminutive size, critics say the Windows-based Motorola Q still sports a large, 2.4-inch display, an ample, easy-to-use keyboard, a 1.3-megapixel camera and an integrated MP3 and video player. However, there are no word processing or notepad applications, so you'll need to buy additional software if you intend to do any document editing. Battery life is also a shortcoming according to professional and user reviews. This Verizon smartphone uses the fastest data network, Verizon's EV-DO, for quick downloads.

Blackberry Curve is also amazing.

The significant advantage I would say Q holds over Curve is that, you can buy an additional software from mobile Office companies which enables you to edit documents. It also gives you stereo sound output with wireless stereo headsets. You can watch an entire movie on it and internet browsing as i told you is fastest on it because of EV-DO.

It also costs much lower than Blackberry.

Go for it dude.

Never check in valuables like camcorders and airport x-ray machines have absolutely no negative effects on hard drives and SD cards. I've traveled on hundreds of flight with laptops, digital cameras and SD cards and have never had a problem.

how do i get better video quality using a dazzle dvd recorder?

When i record something with my film camcorder, i transfer it to my computer by playing it back and recording it onto my computer using the dazzle dvd recorder. When i do this however, the video quality drops significantly, but the audio is fine. how do i get better video quality with my dazzle, even though my camcorder doesnt have an s-video output?

Answer
You did not tell us which camcorder.

If it is an analog camcorder, you are reducing the quality when you transfer to the VOB DVD standard definition format. Each time you compress, you reduce quality. When you compress the video, dideo data is discarded. When you "decompress" the video, the decompression is providing only "best guess" when rebuilding the video.

If you want "best video quality", then don't re-use the tapes - transfer directly from the camcorder to the computer and skip the offload to the DVD recorder.

I don't think you are using a "film" camcorder. Film cameras would require you to send the exposed film out for developing and return to you with the developed film. Analog and digital video tape are more likely what you are using.

If you are using analog tape (VHS, VHS-C, Hi8), then get an analog/digital converter (USB for Pinnacle Dazzle; firewire for Canopus ADVC55 or ADVC110).

If you are using digital tape (Digital8 or miniDV), then install a firewire port on your computer and transfer the digital video directly. Firewire, IEEE1394 and i.LINK are all the same thing. If your computer has no firewire port and no expansion slot to add one, then your only option is the USB-connectinganalog/digital converter described above. USB-to-Firewire adapter/hub/converter/cable things do not work.

In either case, bypassing the DVD step you currently do and saving that for the LAST step of the process will greatly improve your video quality.

If you want to upload videos to the computer easily, what is the best camcorder to have?

riri_co09

Is it better to get a DV camcorder, even though it requires a firewire port? Is it better to get a hard drive or sd card camcorder? I don't want a flash memory camcorder, but most importantly I want a camcorder with good video quality on the camera and the computer once it is transferred.

Answer
The best video quality continues to come from video captured in DV or HDV format. For consumer camcorders, that means miniDV tape. There are external hard drives for camcorders typically with a firewire port - from companies like Focus Enhancements (FireStore) - but even those external hard drives save to DV or HDV format.

Internal hard drive or flash memory based camcorders typically store the captured video in a very compressed MPEG2 (standard definition) or AVCHD (high definition) format.

DVD camcorders compress even more into their VOB or VRO format files and their video is not menat to be edited - though people try by ripping the video, the quality is not very good.

Video compression = discarded data = reduced video quality.

Firewire400 ports are typically cheap to add
http://shop2.frys.com/search?search_type=regular&sqxts=1&query_string=firewire+card&cat=&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
if your computer has an available PCI port.

If you use an Apple Macintosh, they have had firewire ports for almost ten years... the only exception is the new Mac Air.

From my experience:

MiniDV tape: Lock the tape, then rewind to where you want to start the import, click import, go do something else until the import is done. The clips are a single huge file in the editor, but making the individual clips is as easy as dragging them to the desktop outside the editor window. Store the tape in a cool dry place, nice long shelf life. Camera dies, get another camera. Do not reuse tapes.

Hard drive or flash memory: Since all the files are individual (and there will be more than you expect because the largest file is 20 minutes - there is no frame drop, but there is an extra step to put the clips back together when editing), and copying to your computer is fast - some computer operating systems may need an additional file conversion step. Before you start editing, make another copy of the files for archiving... another hard drive or burning discs (data DVDs, not video DVD format). Camera dies - let's hope all the files were transferred, otherwise, the internal HDD is not removable, so get to know folks like http://drivesavers.com/ and open your wallet REALLY wide...

Can you dub a disc from a Hard Drive or Flash Card Camcorder?

mini sport video camera
on Mini Md80 DV DVR Sports Video Camera Webcam (EG-S21) - China Mini Dv ...
mini sport video camera image

Ronald

I need to recommend a new camera for my coach to use. He likes to dub the video from the camera to a DVD. I'm pretty sure he does this by hooking up the camera to the TV or DVD recorder and then playing back the video. Our current camera uses mini discs. Can a camera that uses a Hard Drive or Flash Cards do the same thing? And if so, what kind of ports does it need?

Answer
Hi Ronald:

The short answer to your Question is "yes": HDD and Flash Card video files can be copied to DVD for review & archiving.

The downside is that most consumer HDD and SD Card storage camcorders use high-compression of the video information (to save space), so individual frame detail is lost in the process. And for fast pans (following a football) and quick-action footage, compressed-video can have annoying "motion artifacts" where the frame-to-frame detail is "interpolated" (mathematically guessed-at).

These 2 types of camcorders typically use USB ports to connect to a computer for transfer & editing. MiniDV tape-based camcorders use lower-compression (more frame & pixel detail is stored), but transfers have to be in "real-time", so a 2-hour game takes 2-hours to transfer. MiniDV camcorders require a FireWire port on the computer or DVD recorder. Digital video files (from HDD and cards) can be just "dragged & dropped" to copy. The files are huge, so it still takes some time (especially over USB), but it's quicker than tape transfer.

I shoot a lot of "sports combine" review videos (like on Yahoo!Sports' Rivals.com), as well as live game action; and coaches & scouts almost exclusively want MiniDV-based footage because of the motion capture quality.

There are pro-level and "prosumer" (semi-pro) cameras & camcorders that use high-speed CF-cards and/or FireWire based external hard drives (FireWire is faster than USB) as well as tape storage. These typically run (new) in the $1500-$3000+ price range, but are ruggedly built (Sony HVR-Z1 thru Z7 series are a good example).

Having the option of "solid state" memory or HDD external storage gives you the speed of quick file transfers & editing for review. The TV pros call this "DTE" for Direct-To-Edit workflow.

If your coach has a lower budget (his mini-DVD camcorder was originally around $1000 or less, like the $1100 Sony HCR-DVD300), he'll need to make a compromise between frame-detail (especially when reviewing in slo-mo or still-frame) and price. Features to shop for include variable shutter-speed, Slo-Mo "burst" record mode (for things like gymnastics or golf-swings), and pre-record mode (actually captures the video just-before you hit Record, so you get all the action).

Feel free to update your Question with exactly what sport or sports your coach deals with, which can make a difference in feature choices, and what his price range is (which makes a big difference in model selection).

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

If you have Windows XP, there is an import function with Movie Maker through the Accessories. You can then edit it and upload it through that program.

The main question is...do you have Movie Maker....if not you can download it from Microsoft.

Im always making videos.. i use my regular camcorder but im looking for a professional one.. this will be my first pro one so any suggestions would help?

Answer
You *could* step into it. We don't know what you are using now, so we are at a bit of a disadvantage. There are "prosumer" camcorders like the standard definition Canon GL2 and Sony DCR-VX2100 and in high definition, there is the Sony HDR-FX1000. The biggest obvious difference is Prosumer cams use a 1/8" stereo mic jack instead of the pro-grade XLR connectors... You can use an XLR adapter like those from juicedLink or BeachTek if you use XLR-based mics.

Or you can take the leap and get to the Sony HVR-V1U or Canon XHA1 in relatively short order.

I am looking for a camcorder that shoots in HD, has a Manual Focus, White Balance, all that jazz. Does anyone know which camera is the best bang for your buck? I have been looking at the different Canon Vixias, but I would another persons opinion on this one.

Answer
The Canon Vixia, Sony Handycam, Panasonic (they don't have a brandname) and other consumer camcorders bury manual controls in a menu. While the Vixias and Handycams at the higher end (in the $800+ range) have a thumbwheel that can be assigned manual focus capability, none in this class have a focus ring. The least expensive camcorder that captures high definition video and has a real focus ring is the Sony HVR-HD1000 shoulder mount - or the Sony prosumer HDR-FX7 for a smaller footprint. If size is an issue, the Sony HVR-A1 (with the XLR adater removed) has a lens-barrel ring that can be either manual focus or manual zoom but it is pretty pricy.

ALL camcorders have a white balance control in their menu system.

The microphone doesnt have to be the absolute best but im wondering what hd camcorder is the best for shooting music videos for under 200$

Answer
"the best price and quality for music videos?" I like the Sony HDR-FX1000.

For your budget? We get to pick mostly from Point and shoot cameras that can capture video as a convenience feature. I like the Canon PowerShot line.

Tips:

1) Be sure the lighting is REALLY good. Outside on a sunny day - bright fog-filtered is really good.

2) Use some sort of steadying device... tripod, chair, shelf, rock - anything, but not handheld.

3) Use pre-recorded audio. The mics in the point and shoots are not so good.

4) Be very careful with editing.

5) Capture in highest quality.

6) Have a compelling subject and story line.

If you learn the limitations of the camera and figure out how to use them to your advantage, you can do good work with inexpensive equipment... For example, this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dJIPVkboWc
was recorded using a 6 year old cell phone (not a smart phone - check the post date) in less than standard definition video quality and edited with consumer grade, free (bundled with Macintosh operating system), iMovie, on a 8 year-old Mac.

What kind of camcorder for amateur music video?

I am looking to make a very low budget music video... and a series of low budget kind of documentary type videos. My question is what kind of camcorder would be good enough for the job? I have a budget of $300 at the most would like to keep under $250 for the camera. I need something with good quality and is compatible with a MAC. Thank you to anyone who helps.

Answer
Forget Mini-dvd tooooooo many problems. if you are going to add music after the video has been taken then the audio quality is not going to matter so much, (most camcorders mics are not very good)

you have a choice of mini-dv (highest quality (Tape)) then media card then Hard drive the last is out of your budget.

If video quality is high on your list then go for Mini-dv if you are going to post it to a video website then the importance of high quality is not so important then go for media card cameras.

Depending on your Mac as they developed Firewire (IEEE1394) then that will work fine on a mac. you will need to check with the camcorder makers to see if a media card camera will be ok on your Mac even if its not there are plenty of video converters around.

Good luck

I am going to start making youtube videos and wanted to know what was the best video camera to invest in. I keep seeing that everyone is suggesting the flip video cameras, is that really a good video camera? I want the camera to be under $500. Im looking for best quality video camera. Thank you!

Answer
I suggest the Kodak PlaySport Zx3.

The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.

Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.

Lows
Fair audio quality and battery life.

You can click the link below for more information.

Is my camcorder the problem or is it my vdeo editing software?

So I shot a couple of videos to put together while I was at school with my Kodak Sport. Now I've put the videos into the AVS Video Editor, but It's making the videos choppy and messed up. But when I play the recorded videos on my camera the playback is fine. What's happening to my videos?

Answer
Try to view in a different player. vlc is good or quicktime.

Try these free converters http://www.squared5.com http://www.handbrake.fr/ I like handbrake.

Free players http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ I like vlc

If you can view your videos is VLC then the problem may lie in your editing software, not being compatible.
If your camputer is old then that might be your problem, not enough hard drive, ram etc.

I found a pocket camcorder/camera that has a zoom of x4. Is that good? I don't really understand that. What kind of zoom should a good camera have? I mean, on black friday it is only 20 dollars, so i'm sure that isn't the greatest, but is it even worth that much? It is a 1.3 megapixel camera. What would be a good zoom for a camera?

Answer
4x refers to how far it can zoom in. Like when you see 4x on binoculars and rifle scopes it it means they have a magnification of four times. That being said, the magnification dosen't really translate into quality. If you want good quality look for and 'optical' zoom. That means it won't loose quality when you zoom in. If you get a digital zoom, then the closer you zoom in the crappier the quality gets. Being that it's a 20 dollar pocket camcorder, it most likely had digital zoom. but for 20 dollars, you can't complain. lol

Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

Answer
Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

Im looking for a camcorder that is professional, HD, SD card, and something that has longevity. I dont want to make an investment and something better comes out. Ive heard of the RED cameras but I cant afford that. Ive looked at some DSLR's. What do you recommend for movies and commercials?

Answer
Take a look at the Canon XF100. As far as I have seen, it is the only Pro-camcorder at it's price to get a 50 mbps data rate. Everything else under about $5000 is getting half of that, making them little better than a good consumer twinkie-cam.

At $3300, the XF is not much more expensive than a 5DM2 with a good lens.

i know that the $300 is not a lot for an hd video camera and that it won't be the greatest video quality ever, but i'm just a college kid so my funds are limited to say the least. i record tennis matches with my brother, and we usually play at night, as well as basketball games (during the day). any thoughts?

Answer
no consumer HD camera can record sports action except as a blur. that is because of the super high compression. MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.

the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

widescreen? miniDV is widescreen. a pro miniDV camera starts at about $2000 US. the only consumer format that is "movie quality" or television quality for that matter is HDV, expect to pay $4000 plus. The only video format accepted at Sundance Festival requires a $20,000 US camcorder. anyone who thinks dSLR is pro grade has never had to edit a feature video, or a wedding or a sports highlight clip.

How do they film the overhead shots at golf tournaments?

sliverscoo

I'm not talking about the shots of the ball in flight, but rather when they are "previewing" a hole, they have an overhead shot of the hole - from the tee box up to the green. What do they use to film this? Just a camcorder hooked up to a helicopter? Is a helicopter ride that smooth, or do they use special equipment to keep the shot steady?

Answer
Honestly- they don't use helicopters as they make so much noise that they will distract the golfers. They actually build very tall scaffolding towers and attach a camers to the top. Someone climbs to the top of the "tower" to operate the camera. The "towers" are built high enough that the camera can be swung around to film different holes. There are only about three or four of these that they build on each course. If you ever watch any of the tournaments on TV- you can often see these "towers" in the background.
And sometimes, when they film an overhead shot of a course it is from a blimp since they make no noise. Proof there can be no external noise- watch a tournament on TV and you will always see a person (or people) in the background holding up two arms or a long sign. That is to hush the gallery- or the spectators- as the golfers need complete concentration.

No Mic port, leave the camcorder at home. You will get very little of the band and the singing, but the cheering and clapping of the 400 or so of the people around you and closest to you first, the band(s) audio last.

Take a digital audio recorder with your and then bribe the mixer operators for that feed out. Same goes for connectors and cables. Then mix video and audio in your NLE software.

I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

Answer
Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

What equipment should I start out with for ghost hunting?

I want to start ghost hunting, but can't afford all the stuff I see on TAPS, what should I start out with first?

Answer
Equipment

Camera: Nothing fancy with at least 400 speed film. 800 speed film seems to get the best results outside, and black and white is also something good to try. If you are more experienced photographer you may want to try infrared film. I have seen results from Polaroids but I suggest you only use these along with a 35 mm camera, so you can compare the results. If you use a digital camera make sure you have one with a good flash or a slave flash. I use a 35 mm camera, with automatic film advance, on investigations. I have used Fuji film primarily but I have also used Kodak and a department store brands with similar results. When you develop them you do not need to go to a camera shop, the local drug store or department store is fine. Let them know you want all the pictures developed "As Is", so that you get the pictures that they might think are bad ones. These "bad ones" are normally your best ecto-mist photos.

Flashlight w/spare batteries: A common sense item. Remember to bring spare batteries for everything. Due to spirit activity, batteries often run down very fast and you do not want to miss anything because of dead batteries.

First Aid Kit: just in case, it's very easy to trip in the dark and get cut.

Notebook w/pens and pencils: You need to write down and log in everything that happens. If you do not, then you really do not have much research information.

An example of this is one investigator gets a EMF reading that's high and never writes it down. Another investigator takes a picture of the same area but is not aware of the reading and gets a anomalous image. Without that EMF reading the picture may be good evidence, but with a report noting the reading, the picture greatly increases in evidence value. Many investigators use a pocket tape recorder in stead and that is fine, just make sure you have spare batteries and tapes.

Jackets or weather appropriate clothes: If you are cold you are not at your best and your observation skill could suffer, pretty common sense.

Watch: You can log in the times of events and your arrival and departure.
Video camera(optional tripod): A regular camcorder can be used for video taping in lighted or day light conditions. The Sony line of camcorders has an infrared night shot feature that enables you to video tape in complete darkness and see beyond what the human eye can see.

Tape recorder w/external microphone and high grade tapes: You have to use a external microphone when recording EVPs (ghosts voices). If you rely on the internal microphone you will also be recording the internal gears and motors and this will make your tape worthless. Any sound you hear on the tape could not be used as evidence because of this, so use the external mic, they are pretty inexpensive. The type of tape that is most often recommended is high bias tapes or metal tapes.

Digital Audio Recorders: This recorder is small and easy to carry. You can also use the voice activation feature so there is less audio to review. I use this for my notes as well. Most units record the time of the recording as well which is very useful.

EMF Detector: These meters read the electromagnetic fields in an area. It is a common theory that spirits disrupt this field in such a way that you can tell one is present by higher than normal readings with this meter. There are many types and price ranges. You need to be aware of the natural readings in an area or building before you assume that your reading a ghosts presence. Make sure that you know where power lines, electrical line, major appliances and electronics are before you begin your readings with this useful and easy to use tool. You can try using a compass in place of this , the needle compass would move or shake when something was interfering with electromagnetic field the compass relies on the work properly.

Night Vision Scope:This tool may be useful in viewing some spirit activity It amplifies any existing light via the use of infrared. They are pricey and a good one can run into the 1000's of dollars.

Cellular Phone: If you have one it can come in handy in case of an emergency.

Motion Detectors can be used to sense movements by often unseen forces or spirits. You can get battery operated ones for about 20 dollars and they are great for inside but I have seen them used successfully outdoors as well, just watch the placement. You don't want a tree branch setting it off.

Thermometer or Thermal Scanner: You can use a digital thermometer that you can get for 25-50 dollars or spend a bit more to get a point and shoot thermal scanner. All of these are good for detecting cold spots that are often found in haunted places. I recommend using the thermal scanner guns in indoor areas because they shoot out a beam that reads the temperature of whatever it hits. It's easier to keep track of areas indoors with this type. A regular digital or analog thermometer works better out side because it is detecting the air that is

I'm currently looking at the PowerShot SD870 IS specifically, but I'm also looking at other PowerShot cameras. I'm looking for a camera that has great audio quality and that's not a camcorder. I'm not sure where I should cap my budget, so I'll look at anything.

Where to find a very cheap professional digital camcorder.?

Q. Around 10-12 MP with great Audio options. Anyoneknow of a website where people are cleaning out their stuff and happened to find one or something?

Answer
No such thing as 10-12 megapixels in a camcorder, at any price. Even full high definition is only 2.1MP.

If you need good manual audio control and XLR inputs, try some of the older pro DV camcorders on Ebay, like a Sony PD150 or Panasonic DVX100 or something like that. A lot of good deals on those since everyone is moving up to high def. Still not exactly cheap...

Answer
If you want a good HD camera within a decent price range. Check on the Kodak Zi8. I have that one and it does beautifully. You can change between 1080p, 720p 60FPS, 720p 30FPS, and SD videos. It even has 5.1MP stills, but I don't use that. The best thing about it is the external mic jack, which allows you to use a better microphone, which Flip cameras do not have. As well as an SD card slot, which allows countless hours of recording.

Why are cameras / camcorders waterproof to certain depth?

Jillin G

This just came up in my mind, How come cameras / camcorders are waterproof only to a certain depth. Like the kodak playsport, it says it's waterproof only down to 10 feet or something. What happens if you go lower?

Answer
As you go deeper, the water pressure increases. The seals designed to keep the water out of the inside of the camera/camcorder are not designed to handle the pressure.

When you get to about 10 feet, your ears can feel the effects of that pressure.

The underwater camera or camcorder housings that are made for 100+ feet depth will typically cost more than the camera they are protecting... The deeper the housing is rated, the more challenging it is to engineer and make and the more expensive it is.

Are there any suggestion for a device that shots good video, outputs to analog HD, and is under $600.

What is the best 1080 Camcorder for YouTube?

Ben

I am looking to buy a new camcorder for making movies. What are some of the better cameras that I could buy? Any price under $600 is fine, but it needs to be able to record in 1080p, thanks!

Answer
Right now I'm looking at the Panasonic HDC-HS900K camcorder:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I43MK4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thegoarev-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B004I43MK4

It's not under your $600 budget with a price of $1399, but it's got some pretty good features about it. Like 1080/60p frames per second (first consumer camera I've seen do this) at 28mbps (also highest I've seen in a consumer camera). It's also capable of capturing 3D video (though you need an extra lens for that). One last thing I like about it is it has a built-in 220gb hard drive and it supports SD cards (SD, SDHC and SDXC).
