I am starting video production and am wondering what equiptment is the best to buy, at an affordable price. I guess I am wanting a professional camcorder at a budgeter's price.

Answer
Great question. Here are my top picks for the best professional camcorder. I have taken price into consideration. If you want HD:

1) Red Scarlet (coming soon, 2009) $3,000
2) Sony PMW-EX1 $6,000
3) JVC GY-HD200U $5,500
4) Panasonic AG-HVX200 $5,000
5) Canon XH-A1 $3,300

RED SCARLET: Many are skeptical about the Red Scarlet as it is a relatively unknown brand, but I believe it is the best professional camcorder under $10,000. No contest. With a traditional camcorder, like that made by Sony, Canon, etc, you'll be lucky if you get one that records in true HD. That is, most camcorders do NOT record in true 1920 x 1080 resolution, apart from the Sony PWM-EX1, as listed above. The Red Scarlet however, records footage in 3K, that is about 150% of the resolution of 1920 x 1080 HD. All that for $3,000. I don't know how well the Scarlet will perform when it is released in 2009 as far as color reproduction, cinematic look, audio capabilities, and manual controls, but I do know that it gives you better resolution than any camera I know of under $20,000. Therefore, the Red Scarlet is definately worth looking into. 3K footage for under $3K is a total steal!
______________
SONY PMW-EX1: It is a relatively new camcorder that records to tapeless media the SxS cards. The EX1 has better resolution that its Canon, Panasonic and JVC competitors, as the XDCAM cards do NOT compress nearly as much as HDV. Another huge advantage is that it has 3 CMOS chips that are 1/2" each, as opposed to 1/3" or smaller chips found on every other camera under $10,000. The larger image sensor gives your picture a much narrower depth of field, which is great for budding filmmakers, wanting that look of celluloid film. The only setback is that the EX1's media format, the SxS XDCAM media cards only record about 25 minutes of high quality footage on the supplied card, and purchasing additional cards is very expensive.
_______________
JVC HD200U
The HD200U is no Sony, Panasonic, or Canon, but it is an excellent camera nonetheless. Some pro reviews have said that the earlier model, the HD110U was the second best camera as far as picture quality in the prosumer level, next to the Canon XL-H1, which is $8,000. I really like the HD110 and HD200 as it is the only prosumer HD camera, apart from the XL-H1 with interchangeable lenses, rather than a built in lens. The only problem is that the HD200U does not record HD in 1080p or 1080i, but instead, it only has a lower-resolution 720p mode. To me, this isn't all that bad, as I prefer 720p at 60fps over 1080p at 30fps; it blurs much less, but you'll have to make the decision. Numerous independant films have been shot on the JVC HD110 and HD200, so its an excellent camera!

_______________
Panasonic HVX200: The HVX200 is a great inexpensive choice for the indie filmmaker. It has excellent picture quality and an excellent 24p mode. Another huge upside is that it records to both HDV OR P2 cards, so its really convenient. However, it does not have quite as good picture quality as the Sony EX1, nor does it have interchangeable lenses like the JVC HD200. It's an excellent, well-rounded HD camera nonetheless. I found it works excellent with the Redrock M2 35mm adapters though.
____________
Canon XH-A1: The XH-A1 is rated as one of the best cameras out there for its combination of quality and value for your money. I agree. It's a nice, well rounded camera; relatively easy to use (compared to the others at least) and is packed with loads of features, making it an excellent value. My only problem is that it does not have a 720p mode. It also lacks a real 24p mode, and instead has what Canon calls a 24f mode. According to Canon, the 2 are identical, but I really don't know.

For standard definition, which is still a great option, as HD is still new and expensive:
1) Panasonic AG-DVX100B $2,500
2) Canon XL2 $3,000
3) Sony DSR-PD170 $2,500

I really can't decide whether I like the DVX100B or the XL2 better. I'm leaning towads the DVX100B as a better overall camera (and its very user friendly), but then again, the XL2 has interchangeable lenses. Both can record in 24p, which is a great option. The PD170 is a total low-light wonder, is easy to use, but does not have a 24p mode.

If this is still not what you had in mind for a budget, here are some decent consumer HD cameras:
1) Sony HDR-HC3 and HDR-HC9
2) Canon HV20 and HV30

both are HDV. I highly recommend it. I can't stand mini DVD or flash media. HDV is also considerably better than Hard Disk camera; they don't compress your footage quite as much.

Hope that helps, and I apologize if that's still not what you had in mind. Well good luck, and have fun!!!

What kind of microphone and sound equipment would you recommend to use to make a movie?

I'm going to make a youtube video, and all I have is a Kodak Playsport camcorder, but nothing else, what kind of microphone and sound equipment would I need to do this??
P.S. I wanna make a video kindof like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR5PXn-wS1c&feature=channel&list=UL

Answer
If you want a good HD camera within a decent price range. Check on the Kodak Zi8. I have that one and it does beautifully. You can change between 1080p, 720p 60FPS, 720p 30FPS, and SD videos. It even has 5.1MP stills, but I don't use that. The best thing about it is the external mic jack, which allows you to use a better microphone, which Flip cameras do not have. As well as an SD card slot, which allows countless hours of recording.

best video camera for youth sports image

M K

I am looking to purchase a digital camera, which will be used to photograph youth sporting events and posted on our league website. I am looking to spend around $200, and I am looking for the camera to be able to take clear action shots from a relatively close range. I would also like the ability to record video as well. Reviews seem all over the place for the ones I have checked out (Nikon Coolpix, Kodak Easyshare, etc...).

Any suggestions would be of huge help!

Thank you.

Answer
When purchasing any electronic device on a budget it is important to shop around and do as much research as possible this way you ensure you get not only the best quality product but also the best price.

Personally I recommend taking a look at the following digital camera models

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W530 14.1 MP Digital Camera - http://electronicsreviews4u.com/budget-digital-cameras/sony-cyber-shot-dsc-w530-14-1-mp-digital-camera

Nikon COOLPIX L24 14 MP Digital Camera - http://electronicsreviews4u.com/budget-digital-cameras/nikon-coolpix-l24-14-mp-digital-camera

If neither of these cameras meet your needs etc you might find something you like out of this selection of budget point and shoot digital camera reviews, I have also found that all reviews from this site are written in easy to understand terms and most importantly always gets straight to the important points

I hope this helps you with your purchase and good luck :)

Best camera I can get for around $300?

Ronnie

I'm looking to take pictures and videos of family events/work/nights out/etc. Also one of the main reasons I want a new camera is to take pictures and videos of youth sporting events. Not looking for a really expensive camera though. My budget is around 300, I can go higher if really needed but don't want to go past say 400 but I want to really know I'm getting a much better quality if I do go up to 400. I've been looking at the Fuji HS30EXR that I can find for 300 even. Is this camera one of the best in the price range? Can you guys suggest some pros and cons of the camera as well as others I should look into? Thanks.

Answer
You'll pay more money for less camera with Canon or Nikon, I'd take the Fujifilm without a second thought.

The HS30's main advantage over its cheaper stable-mates is its Li-on battery, addressing one of the few weaknesses of this range.

any help?

Answer
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

What is a fairly good, but inexpensive video camera?

Layla Kyri

Due to the fact that my best friend will soon graduate and move out of state, I'm looking into ways to actually to see her, in a more fun way than skype or something. I'm thinking youtube videos to each other, sorta in a FiveAwesomeGirls way. This requires a camera (not webcam) that has good enough picture and sound, and cheap enough that I can buy two without going broke. Got anything?

Answer
Camcorders or still image cameras that happen to record video and ausio as a convenience feature range in price from about $50 to over $50,000.

"Inexpensive" means different things to different people. For a camcorder to provide decent low-light behavior and have appropriate audio connectivity and control, I think "inexpensive" starts at around $800 (and something in the Canon HF S area would be appropriate). For less $, one capable of dealing with extreme sports like the GoPro Hero or Contour cameras might be interesting. Or a Sanyo Xacti... These have a smaller lens and imaging chip and less manual audio gain control. Or a point and shoot camera like something from the Canon PowerShot family that happens to capture video as a convenience feature...

So... first, set a budget rather than just say "inexpensive". Then see what fits and ask here again.

Answer
Sony HDR-CX190 High Definition Handycam 5.3 MP Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom (2012 Model) has been a great HD camcorder so far. It is very small and lightweight, to say the least. I think the 70 series battery I bought for this unit weighs almost as much as the camera. The controls are good with the little screen joystick and menus. The color is very good on the screen, and the video is sharp. I like the 30x for videoing my stepsons' wrestling matches.

What is the best software to edit videos and put on DVD for a camara that creates m2ts files?

slb1969

I have a Sony Camcorder and right now I am converting the m2ts files that it creates to the supported format for pinnacle studios. The conversion takes a long time so I am looking to skip the conversion step.

Answer
I think your trying to create a "classic" dvd, possibly with menus? The problem is that your m2ts files are probably high definition, and old fashioned DVD is not. Your software has to reduce the resolution of your video to convert to standard DVD "vob" files, which can be a slow process. But you may not necessarily need to reduce the definition of your files to an old outdated format (and why would you want to?)?

Most newer DVD and BluRay players recognize video files with the HD type compression format (AVI files compressed with either h264, xVid, etc...). In other words, if you use a conversion program to instead convert your files to HD avi, they may play directly in your player by just burning them as files onto a DVD disc. A good (and free) program that does this easily is the freeware program Freemake. It will will combine, merge, and save multiple files into a single HD file if desired. Think it will also burn them for you onto a DVD. Check the following two links out, think they'll help:

I am looking for a camcorder for basic video taking, cheap, easy to use?

Alax

One that will do ok outside videoing our dog, inexpensive (under$100) and that we could burn to DVD's and load to our computer. I am not very savey in this area fyi. Any help/suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
Get the Kodak PlaySport Zx3, it's a Consumer Reports recommended choice. Good quality pic, easy on the checking account, cute to look at, different colors available.

The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.

Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.

Lows
Fair audio quality and battery life.

Are any camcorders good in low light environments like indoors?

best camcorder low light image

Paranormal

I have a camcorder I bought for â¬235 in 2011 which is 10MP. Indoors it is always grainy and fuzzy except in some very bright lighting. Outdoors it's better. Are there any camcorders available that are sharp indoors and in low light/dark environments and have little/no visible noise/grain?
My camcorder only has ISO controls for photographs and not video. It has a "Night mode" and white balance but no matter what settings I use, I almost always get grainy video indoors even with lights on.
My camcorder is Toshiba Camileo A35.

Answer
Good low-light means large lens filter diameter and large imaging chip. The large lens allows in more light; the large imaging chip can deal with what little light is available. You have already discovered that small lens diameter and small imaging chip doe not behave well. As camcorders increase in price, their lenses get larger - so do the imaging chips... You did not tell us which camcorder you are currently using, but at your price point, I would guess 30mm filter diameter and 1/6" single imaging chip. or you are using a digital still camera (maybe even a bridge camera) that happens to capture video as a secondary "convenience feature".

For low-light conditions, at a minimum, I use my Sony HDR-FX1. This was replaced by the HDR-FX1000. 72mm filter diameter lens and 1/3" 3CCD imaging chip. If it is really dark, then Panasonic AG-HVX200 with 82mm filter diameter and 1/3" 3CCD imaging chip works well... above this they start to get expensive.

If these cameras are too expensive, you have an alternative... learn to shoot "day for night". ADD light during video capture
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw
and use a decent video editor...

What camcorder records well in low light?

Clutch Car

Hello all, I have an $800 dollar budget and am looking for a new camcorder. I had a Vixia HG21 and it was stolen. The problem with it was in low light the picture got really grainy and the frame rate slowed down so much. The video got choppy in low light, it was pretty frustrating. I want a new camcorder but a nice one that is HD and records well in low light or darkness. Thanks

Answer
If you need good low-light behavior, then you need a camcorder with LARGE lenses and LARGE imaging chip array. Compare the size of these items on your (former) camcorder or any that you want to get to a Sony HDR-FX1000, Canon XHA1, Panasonic AG-HVX200 or any other large format camcorder.

If you need to capture video in zero visible light, then you need a camcorder capable of "seeing" infrared light. They usually have their own built-in infrared emitter. Check the Sony HDR-CX900 series or the HVR-A1. You are looking for "NightShot" or "Super NightShot".

I want to record and review electronic equipment, so I am looking for a video camera that would be good for that type of thing, but I couldn't think what to search for. Any ideas? Probably something with a stand so I could use it hands free. Thanks

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer.

How to start an events photography business?

Laissa

I am planning to start an events photography business, I'd like to start small, like covering birthday parties, children parties, baptisms, local sports events etc.. I have already done few events for some my family and friends for free but now I'd like to try doing it professionally.

At first I'll try to avoid shooting for weddings since weddings have pre-nuptials and wedding preps shoot and usually those shoots need certain kinds of skills and artistic vision which I think I have not developed yet. But I'm planning to attend workshops for wedding photography some time in the near future ( maybe this month or the next) so I might just touch on that aspect someday.

Anyway, I'd like to ask what are the gears that I need to add to successfully jump start my business.

These are the equipment that I currently have:
Nikon D5100
Nikkor AF 50 mm f/1.8D (this is on my camera most of the time)
Tamron 70-300mm without VC (I have used this a lot in triathlon events and I'm quite satisfied about it)
Standard kit lens Nikkor 18-55mm VR (I usually use this if I need a wider angle lens)
Yongnuo Speedlite YN560

I was planning to buy a continuous light kit since I saw a lot of photographers used those in the events and parties that I attended. (nope I am not planning to do videography, I just want a different light source aside from my flash because I experienced shooting outside in the middle of the dark and got a really burned out picture) I was about to buy the Yongnuo LED video light 160 but at the last minute changed my mind.

Should I have pushed through with the purchase or should I just try covering few events first with only my external flash then save my money to buy a bigger light source? (Take note: this unit contains only 160 LED bulbs for $50 at Amazon. I liked it because it was light and portable plus I don't have an assistant so I'm the only one who would do all the shooting and lighting placement work. )

Another thing, should I buy another camera body (like a Nikon D600 which will become my main camera and the Nikon D5100 will be my extra since I heard that it is nice to have an extra body in case your main camera encounters problems) or invest my money in a premium lens (wide angle or portrait)

Answer
You should really enrol in a photography course at your local college...they should offer evening and weekend courses that you might be able to do in your spare time...this helps you to be prepared for the demands of 'business' and would answer all the questions you have about your equipment...

...I'd also approach a local newspaper or even the local church magazine (if it has one) and ask if they could use your services to help illustrate their 'productions'...you couldn't really charge at this point, it is great experience though and will help you build decent 'contacts' for the future, at the same time it will let you see how 'difficult' and 'stressful' photography can be as a career choice.

Britters04

I have been trying to connect my Canon zr85 to my Mac OS X to transfer video from the tape. Having installed the disk software and connecting the camera via firewire (after buying an updated firewire 800 cable) the computer still will not recognise the camera. I've followed everything in the manual - any advice would be helpful.
Thank you!

Answer
The Canon ZR85 is a MiniDV tape based camcorder that can record standard definition video to digital tape.

Connect a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) and the computer's firewire port (not USB). Sounds like you did this - Great! Put the camcorder in VCR or Play mode. Launch iMovie and import or capture the video.

How do I download a video from my digital still camera to my Mac and send it in a email?

Sarale

My camera is a canon Powershot A530. I have the USB cable to connect to my mac computer OS X, however my camera doesn't have firewire capability and from everybodys answers I understand that I need a firewire. I read about the adaptor but does the adaptor works if the camera doesn't have firewire capability ?

Answer
As far as I know. Not a lot of the cameras in the Market has got firewire.

Perhaps you don't even need one. As suggested, only DV Camcorders has firewire and this is the case because the file for the still video is very huge and firewire is more reliable in transferring such huge file with no errors.

For your case any video file that is 3GB and below you can transfer it using your USB cable.

Just Open your iPhoto, and then it would recognize your camera to do the importing of photos. Video would be imported in as well.

For simple editing purpose, iMovie could be used after the content of the camera is imported into the iPhoto.

How do i know what recording settings i want when using my Gopro HERO3 Black?

Jordan

In what situations is it best to use which settings? For example, when is it better to record in 1080p with 60fps, as oppose to using 1440p at 48fps? When is each setting better?
Please explain what situations are best for each setting. Helpful answers will be appreciated and acknowledged with a best answer.

Answer
Standard frames per second ("frame rate" or FPS) = 30 fps for NTSC; 25 fps PAL; 24 fps film-based movies.

Faster frame rate allows better slow motion playback - assuming the shutter is a decent speed and the lighting is good.

In the two examples you cite, 60 fps is a function of 30 fps or NTSC standard frame rate. If 60i, this is the same as 30p. For 48 fps, then a function of 24 fps "cinema" mode.

The higher frame rates will be better for slow motion stuff.

Please keep in mind the GoPro family are "action cameras" and not "general purpose" camcorders. They *can* capture "regular" video - but are designed for fast action video capture.

The settings you choose depend on what the plan is for the video when editing.

I am looking for an HD Video Camera that can do 1080p, but also has some high speed functionality; not at the same time though. I know there are almost no high speed cameras that can shoot HD high speed, that aren't godly expensive. The high speed is for artistic not research purposes, which is why I'm not looking for something that can do 1000fps. Does anyone know of decent cameras under $500 that can have 1080p shooting and 120fps modes?

Answer
Most people who do motion analysis and slo-mo sports use miniDV for a good reason. miniDV is like motion picture film, that is it takes actual frames of video. Even better, it records successive fields so that you can get perfect half speed playback with no blur from interpolation. It can be slowed to 1/4 speed (120 fps equivalent) and not have noticeable jerk. Also because interpolation is not involved, using a high speed shutter setting, (like 1/1000 sec) insures sharp images at all times. miniDV does all this while using just the normal settings, so you can decide later what sections and how long to slo-mo.

Now consider consumer HD video. It is not suitable for motion, let alone slo-mo. The reason is just to shoot 30 fps, the H.264 format (AVCHD, MPEG4 etc) the camera records only one frame out of every 8 in succession, called a Group of Frames (GOF) of 8. GOK what is on the missing frames, and on playback they are "restored" by interpolation, a process that essentially blurs motion. the blur can't be corrected by shooting with a high speed shutter, it is an artifact of the decoding process. You may have already discovered this in trying to edit existing HD footage.

There is a work around with specially designed consumer cameras. They can shoot a 3 second burst of "high speed" which is buffered in its internal memory and then written back to the SD card, so it is not a continuous process and you have to decide when shooting when to start the burst. I say it is so-called high speed because what is actually done is it samples the CCD at the normal video rate (30 fps) but it keeps all the frames. then when played back with a GOF of 8, you get effectively 8 times the frame rate, or 240 fps. It doesn't fully resolve the blur issue because it still requires interpolation on playback, just like normal video. But should be adequate for artistic purpose.

I think Sony offers burst recording on some of its midrange ($500) camcorders.

kodak play sport camera and extreme cold water?

Cheryl

Just received my camera today, and figure the first time I can use it underwater would be at my city's annual polar bear swim. For those not in the know, They basically cut a hole in the ice, and in you hop. I know the camera is waterproof to a certain extent, but was wondering if extremely cold water would somehow damage it. I know its a silly question, but I'm not well educated in cameras!

Answer
Ok thats cold.

Most cameras dont like very cold or hot temperatures. forget the hot, cold causes components to contract, I am not sure if it would be enough to let the cameras seals leak! there is no information on the website, look in the handbook.

Cold apart from the above, it will seriously reduce the battery life, batteries are different so how much is a suck it and see. maybe try it in a bucket with ice and water. and see if it effect the battery.

two places to try first

1 your handbook

2 contact customer support.

I have a Panasonic PV-GS320 camcorder and a Mac computer. When I connect the camcorder to the computer with the cord, nothing happens. I tried turning it on, but it's dead without the battery and the plug is behind the battery, so the battery has to come out in order for me to plug the cord into the camera. And no, I can't just read the instructions because my idiot brother decided to use it as a fire starter -_-

What is the best and most user-friendly software for capturing video onto my computer?

smarie

I have a camcorder and a digital video camera and would like to capture, edit and burn onto a DVD disk on my desktop computer.
Should I use Windows Movie Maker, Nero, Roxio or something else?

Answer
Obviously the most user friendly is iMovie and iDVD for the Mac.

For the PC, Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker. Mostly, because it is free with compatible operating systems.

If you looking to spend some money on software and you have the system requirement to run it then Adobe Premier Elements.

Youtube video camera for best quality videos?

I am going to start making youtube videos and wanted to know what was the best video camera to invest in. I keep seeing that everyone is suggesting the flip video cameras, is that really a good video camera? I want the camera to be under $500. Im looking for best quality video camera. Thank you!

Answer
I suggest the Kodak PlaySport Zx3.

Is my camcorder the problem or is it my vdeo editing software?

Trent

So I shot a couple of videos to put together while I was at school with my Kodak Sport. Now I've put the videos into the AVS Video Editor, but It's making the videos choppy and messed up. But when I play the recorded videos on my camera the playback is fine. What's happening to my videos?

Answer
Try to view in a different player. vlc is good or quicktime.

Try these free converters http://www.squared5.com http://www.handbrake.fr/ I like handbrake.

Free players http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ I like vlc

If you can view your videos is VLC then the problem may lie in your editing software, not being compatible.
If your camputer is old then that might be your problem, not enough hard drive, ram etc.

What is the best camcorder for recording piano?

jessie(:

Live piano on a grand, not a digital. Which camcorder would give me the best sound quality for a youtube video, perhaps?

Answer
Consumer-grade camcorders don't record audio very well. They have such small microphones and some are only mono and not stereo. Plus you have no control over balance and gain of the audio. One better-than-nothing suggestion is choosing a camcorder with a microphone jack and using a good quality mic will help a lot. But the best way to record audio, especially piano is with a audio recording device, like a Zoom H4n or other recorder. Using a recorder with allow you to balance the inputs and set the proper gain. And you can use more then one microphone (channels). You still shoot your video but use the audio from the recorder to replace the audio of the video in your video editing program. The use of field recorders and mating the audio to film is done all the time in major motion pictures.

A less than appealing video will be acceptable if the sound is appeasing. But a great video with bad audio is very unappealing.

I'm looking for a good video camera under $600 to record an instructional DVD, any advice?

mich

I'm looking for a good video camera under $600 to record an instructional DVD. It will be on a tripod, so it's not going to really need the ability to film sports or anything. Just good quality video and color. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Answer
Pretty much any camcorder in this price range will provide similar video quality - though personally, I would suggest you stay with miniDV tape based camcorders because miniDV tape - specifically the DV format stored to the tape - does not compress the digital video data as much a a hard disc drive (HDD) or flash memory based camcorder in the same range.

Your biggest issue will be to have good lighting on your side. I think the Panasonic PV-GS320, Sony DCR-HC52 and Canon ZR900 and ZR930 are good candidates. With the GS320 and HC52, you should also include a field recorder for the audio - M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol and others make decent units. This is because the GS-320 and HC52 do not have a mic-jack. You want to get the mic as close as possible to the person speaking - so in this case, that means getting the camcorder close for the built-in mics. When you edit the video, replace the camcorder audio with the audio from the field recorder.

The ZR900 and ZR930 have a mic jack (in addition to their built-in mics), so mic placement does not need to coincide with camcorder placement.

Since you should be editing, a DVD based camcorder immediately drops from the list and should not be considered.
