My son's Christmas concert is today at school and I forgot to charge the camcorder last night. If the school will allow me to, can I actually use the camcorder while the charger is on and plugged into the wall in the auditorium, and not have the battery die on me?

I have to leave the house in an hour.

His part in the program is only for about ten minutes or less..

Answer
yes it you can as long as there is an outlet at the school

How do I turn my camcorder into an infrared camera?

Sarah

I'm a paranormal investigator and am looking to use my camcorder only at night. I know that I have to purchase IR lights. How do I attach them? Also, do I need to remove a blocker from inside the lens?

Answer
The IR lights can be used independently from your cam. Just point them in the same direction as the camera lens.
Unless you have a videocam with a nightshot setting such as some of the Sony models, you will have to remove the anti-alias filter in front of the imaging sensor. Whether removing this (often tiny) filter is economically viable, is very debatable because after its removal the distance between the lens and sensor must be recalibrated, and requires specific knowledge of the camera type used, and quite often, special instruments with very fine tolerances.
Before having your camera converted, you could try whether its IR sensitivity is enough to pick up some of the IR beams of your IR illuminator. A simple test will do: point the IR remote of your tv set towards your camera in the dark, press a few buttons on your remote, and check whether or not your videocam recorded any of the IR signals/flashes from your remote. This will give you an indication of the IR recording capabilities of your camera.

Alternatvely, you could look at various night scopes with a so-called video-out jack. They can be expensive, but the $398 Yukon Ranger 5x42 LT for instance (see link below), has a (NTSC) video output which lets you attach a (portable) video recording device, and has built-in IR flashlight.

myTouch 4G vs. iPhone 4 Comparison

Background: The new T-Mobile myTouch 4G (made by HTC) embodies all the latest technology for an Android phone. It runs the Android 2.2 operating system, which is the most powerful version of Googleâs open operating system. And the myTouch 4G is compact yet sports a bright 3.8-inch TFT LCD display, and the phone connects to the Internet on T-Mobileâs high-speed HSPA+ network. Compare that to the Apple iPhone 4, which remains an iconic product with its highly regarded iPhone operating system. The iPhone features a gorgeous (although smaller) display and a popular application store, and the iPhone uses AT&Tâs 3G network for Internet connectivity. How do these phones compare?
Operating System: The myTouch 4G runs on Android, a graphical interface developed by Google that has a growing following by consumers. The myTouch 4G runs Android 2.2, the latest version of Android, which is more powerful and increases file compatibility when compared with previous versions of Android. What Canon DSLR camera should I buy?

Jack Mcrob

I cannot decide between two Canon full frame cameras the 6D and 5D Mark ii. I use my current camera for sports such as football, travel, night time space photography, and video. I have found that it is bad in low light and slow in sports photography. I would like to upgrade to a better performing camera in low light and sports photography. I do not know which one these is better. I have also heard news of the Canon 7D Mark ii and I was wondering if that would be worth waiting for. My final question is where the best place to buy this camera from. I saw on Best Price Photo it is selling for $1,400 vs B and H photo for $1,999. Why is this?

Answer
Do not, repeat do not send your money or credit card information to Best Price. Read the reviews here about their shady practices.

By the way, be aware that none of your EF-S lenses would be mountable on these full-frame cameras.

I am on a very low budget and plan on getting something a higher quality video camera later, but right now I can't really spend more than $500. What advice do you have?

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. best camcorder movie making image
Q. Also, is this a good camcorder to buy for movie making? I've already used it for one short movie in a few shots and it seems pretty good, but it's my friends and I haven't gotten to fully field test it.

Answer
I read through the manual.
http://books.jvc.com/Download/1042016384/LYT2275-001B-M.pdf
There is no reference to a "filter diameter" which is usually the indicator that there are threads for mounting filters (and add-on lenses including tele and fisheye lenses).

While it does use AVCHD compression, in best quality, the compression is relatively low (24 mbps data stream)... not as good as miniDV/HDV's 25 mbps, but very close.

As for whether it is "good for making movies" is subjective. I would want a camcorder that can connect external mics - this one cannot support external mics so an external audio recorder to replace the audio captured by the camcorder would be needed... like a Zoom H1 or H2. This includes an extra step in editing to synch the audio.

What are good camcorders for video editing?

Q. I want an inexpensive (up to $500) camcorder that is good for video editing/movie making. I've heard Mini DV formats are good, but I kind find much out there. Are hard drive or flash memory any good?
Help. Thanks.

I have the option to get a camcorder for $150, 500 dollar discount from a sweepstake, and I was wondering if it were a good deal. I don't know anything about camcorders.

Answer
Here's a helpful camcorder buying guide:

Be sure to research the camcorder model that the sweepstakes is trying to sell to you to ensure that you're getting a good value. A lot of times, some sweepstakes or promotions list a much higher price for an inferior product to make it look more attractive.

What camcorder to use on a low budget fetish porn?

p.dean76

I want to shoot some low budget fetish porn for clips4sale with my gf.
IS there any good HD camcorders in 300-500$ range that can be good to start off with until we get more money to buy a better one? Also if i get a full HD camcorder, am I able to change the setting to high quality or 780p so I can upload the video at a lower disk space usage if necessary?

Answer
The subject really does not matter.

This same recommendation goes for capturing decent video - whatever it is... Under good lighting conditions, any camcorder can capture decent video. In your price range, the Canon HF R entry level or the HF M mid-range consumer camcorders fit. Consider investing in a decent lighting kit.

Generally speaking, consumer grade camcorders will have a "video quality" setting. This will determine the amount of compression applied to the video when captured. The marketing term, "Full HD" generally refers to 1080p video. 99.999$ of humans can't tell the difference between 1080p, 1080i and 720p when the video is captured, edited and rendered properly.

780p is non-standard, so you probably won't find that setting anywhere. Some cameras allow that selection; many do not and instead always capture 1080i/p and let the user pick from "best quality (large file size, very clear on a large monitor, low compression) down to "Low Quality" (small file size, not so clear on a large monitor, high compression) and a few steps in between.

It is always recommended to capture at highest quality - you can always compress and reduce quality and file size... but once the data is compressed, you can't get back all that lost video data, so you can't upgrade back to high quality...

If you think you have decided on a camcorder, download and read the manual before you buy to be sure it has what you want - including the different file size/video quality settings.

I have a 8 week old baby who is starting to babble its soooo cute. I want to buy a camcorder budget is no more then $400 but I seen that the ones with those little tapes are a LOT cheaper. Are they sufficient? How do you transfer them onto a dvd or to the computer.
Any advice will be helpful thanks!

Answer
The best are the ones with the hard drive We looked into the ones with the mini DVD's but they told us they can only hold 30 minutes of recording each!

So we spent more and got the one with the hard drive it was about $700 on sale at Best Buy (Sony Handicam), I know this is more than your budget but wanted to tell you anyway.

What is a good digital camcorder to purchase for low light situations?

kidnapkid

I'm looking for a moderately priced digital camcorder that will record high quality footage in low level light situations, but also have really good sound quality. Mostly for recording live music in small club type settings. Geek speak is Greek to me. I get really confused when people talk about bites and pixels and whatnot. I just want something that can see in the (not completely) dark without being green. If someone can recommend a brand/ product name that would be great.

Answer
"Moderate" means different things to different people.

Good low light generally means either big imaging chips and big lenses to allow as much light in to hit those big imaging chips. The imaging chips are like the retina in you eye. They need light to work well - big lenses allow more light in. The good news is (I think) is *most* clubs have some sort of lighting and the talent is under those lights. That means the talent is not necessarily under "low light" though you might be at the back of the room and the camera will be surrounded by low light, it will be pointed at the talent - that is lit.

My opinion: There is no camcorder with good built-in mics. Whatever camcorder you get should have a mic-in jack so when you discover that the built-ins are not good enough, you have a recovery path.

DO NOT GET A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

Since miniDV tape provides the best available video quality, that is where I will stay...

Low end:
Canon ZR800, ZR900, ZR930
While these camcorders do have mic in jacks, they do not have manual audio control. If the audio you record is loud, the camcorder's auto-mic gain circuit will not be able to handle it. There will be lots of clipping and the audio will sound very muddy. The best mic in the world cannot fix this and the bad audio cannot be fixed in editing. You can replace the audio with properly recorded audio from a field recorder (like those from Marantz, M-Audio or Zoom).

Mid range - some might consider this "moderate":
Canon HV20, HV30
Sony HDR-HC7, HC9
They are around or over $700.

All four cams have a mic-in jack and full manual audio control. These are the least expensive camcorders with both. They all shoot in standard definition (DV) and high definition (HDV), so you have a choice as to which format you want on the miniDV tape.

As miniDV tape camcorders, you will transfer the video from the camcorder to your computer using firewire (IEEE1394a, .Link - all the same thing). USB will not work to tansfer the video from the miniDV tape. You will need to add a firewire 400 port to your computer if you don't already have one. Macs have had them for years.

Since we have gotten this far, I will list the high-end recommended cams, too - Just so you understand where I came up with "moderate":
Canon XHA1
Sony HVR-V1U
Panasonic HDX200
These are all around or over $3,000.

What High Definition Camcorder should I get?

mikenorton

I will be setting up a small studio with green screen and need to buy a high def camcorder. What I need is bang for my buck and good Video quality with a good lens. Big and bulky is not a problem.

Also with the ability to accept an external mic input.

Any ideas?

Answer
One thing with making a good chroma-key is the necessity to have as little compression as possible. Stepping up from HDV into higher-quality HD formats such as Panasonic's P2 and Sony's XDCam might be something to consider. Once you get into that price range, mic inputs are just automatically part of the package.

Lighting, of course, is also incredibly important - have to get that green to be as consistent as possible.

Of course, the concern here is budget. Not sure what your range is.

best camcorder under 10 000 image

ponechaisi

I am starting video production and am wondering what equiptment is the best to buy, at an affordable price. I guess I am wanting a professional camcorder at a budgeter's price.

Answer
Great question. Here are my top picks for the best professional camcorder. I have taken price into consideration. If you want HD:

1) Red Scarlet (coming soon, 2009) $3,000
2) Sony PMW-EX1 $6,000
3) JVC GY-HD200U $5,500
4) Panasonic AG-HVX200 $5,000
5) Canon XH-A1 $3,300

RED SCARLET: Many are skeptical about the Red Scarlet as it is a relatively unknown brand, but I believe it is the best professional camcorder under $10,000. No contest. With a traditional camcorder, like that made by Sony, Canon, etc, you'll be lucky if you get one that records in true HD. That is, most camcorders do NOT record in true 1920 x 1080 resolution, apart from the Sony PWM-EX1, as listed above. The Red Scarlet however, records footage in 3K, that is about 150% of the resolution of 1920 x 1080 HD. All that for $3,000. I don't know how well the Scarlet will perform when it is released in 2009 as far as color reproduction, cinematic look, audio capabilities, and manual controls, but I do know that it gives you better resolution than any camera I know of under $20,000. Therefore, the Red Scarlet is definately worth looking into. 3K footage for under $3K is a total steal!
______________
SONY PMW-EX1: It is a relatively new camcorder that records to tapeless media the SxS cards. The EX1 has better resolution that its Canon, Panasonic and JVC competitors, as the XDCAM cards do NOT compress nearly as much as HDV. Another huge advantage is that it has 3 CMOS chips that are 1/2" each, as opposed to 1/3" or smaller chips found on every other camera under $10,000. The larger image sensor gives your picture a much narrower depth of field, which is great for budding filmmakers, wanting that look of celluloid film. The only setback is that the EX1's media format, the SxS XDCAM media cards only record about 25 minutes of high quality footage on the supplied card, and purchasing additional cards is very expensive.
_______________
JVC HD200U
The HD200U is no Sony, Panasonic, or Canon, but it is an excellent camera nonetheless. Some pro reviews have said that the earlier model, the HD110U was the second best camera as far as picture quality in the prosumer level, next to the Canon XL-H1, which is $8,000. I really like the HD110 and HD200 as it is the only prosumer HD camera, apart from the XL-H1 with interchangeable lenses, rather than a built in lens. The only problem is that the HD200U does not record HD in 1080p or 1080i, but instead, it only has a lower-resolution 720p mode. To me, this isn't all that bad, as I prefer 720p at 60fps over 1080p at 30fps; it blurs much less, but you'll have to make the decision. Numerous independant films have been shot on the JVC HD110 and HD200, so its an excellent camera!

_______________
Panasonic HVX200: The HVX200 is a great inexpensive choice for the indie filmmaker. It has excellent picture quality and an excellent 24p mode. Another huge upside is that it records to both HDV OR P2 cards, so its really convenient. However, it does not have quite as good picture quality as the Sony EX1, nor does it have interchangeable lenses like the JVC HD200. It's an excellent, well-rounded HD camera nonetheless. I found it works excellent with the Redrock M2 35mm adapters though.
____________
Canon XH-A1: The XH-A1 is rated as one of the best cameras out there for its combination of quality and value for your money. I agree. It's a nice, well rounded camera; relatively easy to use (compared to the others at least) and is packed with loads of features, making it an excellent value. My only problem is that it does not have a 720p mode. It also lacks a real 24p mode, and instead has what Canon calls a 24f mode. According to Canon, the 2 are identical, but I really don't know.

For standard definition, which is still a great option, as HD is still new and expensive:
1) Panasonic AG-DVX100B $2,500
2) Canon XL2 $3,000
3) Sony DSR-PD170 $2,500

I really can't decide whether I like the DVX100B or the XL2 better. I'm leaning towads the DVX100B as a better overall camera (and its very user friendly), but then again, the XL2 has interchangeable lenses. Both can record in 24p, which is a great option. The PD170 is a total low-light wonder, is easy to use, but does not have a 24p mode.

If this is still not what you had in mind for a budget, here are some decent consumer HD cameras:
1) Sony HDR-HC3 and HDR-HC9
2) Canon HV20 and HV30

both are HDV. I highly recommend it. I can't stand mini DVD or flash media. HDV is also considerably better than Hard Disk camera; they don't compress your footage quite as much.

Hope that helps, and I apologize if that's still not what you had in mind. Well good luck, and have fun!!!

what camcorder should I buy for a trip?

I'm going to Greece in oct. I need either a camera or camcorder that is easy & light. I've never owned anything but, a 35 mm . I want one that is easy to send pictures to family, will take still photos, low light, maybe, under 1,000 under 500 better.

Answer
To meet your requirements, we highly recommend a single chip CCD camcorder from Sony with miniDV, a long optical zoom, optical stabilization, and that is lightweight and compact.

Most consumer HD camcorders will fit your needs such as the compact Sony HDR-HC9 6MP MiniDV High Definition Handycam Camcorder + Deluxe Accessory Kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015CTI9G?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0015CTI9G , but it might have problems in low light. If you want to get very good quality, we recommend a professional camcorder such as the Sony HDR-FX7 3-CMOS Sensor HDV High-Definition Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IBDWNS?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000IBDWN - again, it might have some problems in low light - depending upon the conditions. You can look around and find it for $1,000.

A single ship CCD is recommended over CMOS in low light. CMOS can sometimes have difficulty in low light because it was designed for use in studios. CCD has excellent low light ability and single chip systems from Sony usually include an infrared IR beam emitter for use in low light or no light - as seen on ghost hunting and sport animal hunting shows.
- To make all this happen, CCD will need more electronic and power, so the CCD camera will definitely be heavier than a CMOS version (but not more than 2-4 lbs). You will want to consider high capacity batteries - explained farther below

There are many grand vistas and large buildings in Greece, so you will definitely need a long optical zoom with optical stabilization. Canon seems to be the leader in this department, but Sony is not far behind. Depending upon your camcorder, you may also want to consider an additional wide angle lens or telephoto lens to capture your subject in tight or extreme long distance situations - explained later

*** The most important consideration will be a camera that is as lightweight and compact as possible to allow you to operate with one hand without causing arm fatigue. You want a camera that will not be a hinderance and prevent you from taking it everywhere. The added advantage to a camcorder of these specs is that it is it very easy to store in your luggage, carry everywhere you go, and fit in a bag when entering places you are not allowed to film or photograph or do not want to record.

We recommend miniDV over DVD, hard drive, or flash memory.
- MiniDV is found everywhere and all over the world at economical prices. We use Panasonic AYDVM63PQ 63/42 Minute Professional Quality Mini-DV Digital Tape, 10 Pack http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANCZ50?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000ANCZ50 - twice the quality and half the price of consumer brands you find at Wal-Mart. Also, miniDV can be used in both standard definition miniDV cameras as well as HDV. Tapes normally come in 60 minute lengths, but you can also find 30 and 80 minute tapes.
- Flash Memory camcorders come in two versions: internal and external. Internal operate exactly like hard drive camcorders except they have no moving parts and are extremely lightweight and compact. External models are usually the lightest of all; however, You will need to purchase SDHC memory cards similar to Delkin 16 GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Class 6 Memory Card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001400C9O?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001400C9O . Smaller and more economical version of these memory cards are available, but you will need to carry a lot of cards - at least 80-100gb worth of cards which are easy to carry and jut as easy to lose.
- Hard Drives don't require anything, so you never have to carry or search for a tape, DVD, or memory card. That is until you fill up the hard drive, and then you must find a DVD burner or computer. If you purchase a hard drive camcorder, you might have to pack your laptop too - more weight, more hassle, and more time spent babysitting the camcorder instead of enjoying your trip. If you use this, you probably want to get a model with at least 80-100gb
- MiniDVD comes in two versions now - the older standard definition and the newer high definition Blueray (Blu-Ray or BD) - which required a specific BR DVD player or connection of the camera to the TV to view. Both are usually the most expensive option of all, but you get what you pay for. The older SD version is currently the only media that allows you to take what you recorded out of the camcorder and view it on almost every DVD player instantly after recording. There is no editing when doing this, so everything comes over - bad takes and all. Be sure to use DVD-R or DVD-RW if you choose this option, and it may be hard to find or afford discs that record more than 30 minutes at a time

* Having said all that, there are a few things you should know. This may affect your decision.
- All current Bu-Ray miniDVD, hard drive, and flash memory save the video to a format called AVCHD and sometimes H.264 or MP4. AVCHD, MP4, and H.264 can record in different compression rates, but you can't always adjust this in your camcorder. You might end up with a highly compressed video that is not as great as the image in your memories.
- Standard Definition miniDVD uses the same compression as regular DVD. You will be recording memories in an older format, but it is guaranteed to work (at a high cost per miniDVD)
- MiniDV uses similar compression to normal DVD, but you must use a deck or the camcorder to play its video to your TV. You may feel tied down, but you can always store and re-use MiniDV a well as use it in the newer HDV camcorders.

If you truly want to go with hard drive or DVD, we highly recommend these models:
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HAF BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive and 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00159JV46?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00159JV46
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HA BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive & 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UWN0VE?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000UWN0VE
- 8GB HDD/DVD Hybrid Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom and 2.7" Wide LCD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8QJV2?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000O8QJV2
- DZHS500A DVD-HDD Hybrid Camcorder Kit, DZHS500AKI, Standard Camcorders http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A38V5C?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001A38V5C
- These are all hybrid camcorders that contain Both a miniDVD system AND a hard drive. The first two models would be our first choice and are High Definition models with Blueray DVD. The second two are the older standard miniDVD systems.
- The best practice for your situation would be to save to hard drive. Once the hard drive fills up, you can dump the video to DVD. After that, you can continue filming. If you are caught in a situation where your hard drive is filled and you need to continue filming, you can pop in DVD after DVD.

* All of current camcorders, regardless of media format, can be hooked to your computer via firewire for capturing video, editing, and publishing to DVD, Ipod, or the internet to share with others.

** Once you go through all this and choose a camcorder, you will also need to consider:
- a couple of large capacity batteries - for filming as long as possible before returning the hotel room
- a camcorder bag - if you do not want to transport your camcorder and accessories in your purse or luggage.
- an external mic system http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006HO3R?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00006HO3R - if you plan to record yourself or a friend while talking from a great distance or on the move
- a telephoto lens or wide angle lens - you will need to know the model number of your camera, mm size of the lens, and if there is threading on your lens for screw on lenses or not. Most HD camcorders come threaded.
- a flexible tripod http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVSLRO?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000EVSLRO - for holding you camera in different places without the need or a large tripod or a friend. many models are available. be sure it will hold the weight of your camera (weight is usually listed on the box and manual with the camera)
- a small cleaning kit with a brush and lens cloth - you can use the same one for digital cameras
- a video light http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CEVP6?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0000CEVP6
- a light bracket for a camcoder that does not have a hot shoe http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NL5X5S?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000NL5X5S

Now that you are armed, shop around. We did not provide a lot of specific answers because there are a multitude of combinations that may work for your needs and tastes. For example, if you want the top of the line Hitachi hybrid camcorder, it is at the $1,000 end of your price range, and you will still have to spend money for the expensive DVDs and other accessories.

One last thing, camcorders don't take photos as well a digital cameras, and the opposite is true. Most digital cameras take excellent photos, but only take VGA video at 640x480 - lower than standard definition resolution. Sellers will often try to confuse you by saying they have a 16 megapixel (mp) camcor

How to interpret the zoom power indicators on a camcorder?

best camcorder zoom optical
on ... Disk Drive Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom (Includes Docking Station
best camcorder zoom optical image

A H

I have a photography background with 35mm film and digital cameras. I am on the market to buy a camcorder and I would like to understand the "reach" of the zoom when it mentions things like "10X optical"? I can easily figure out the reach of, say, a 75-300mm lens in 35mm film cameras. How does the camcorder zoom labels compare to 35mm film camera zooms?

Answer
It is as simple as it seems.

10x zoom means that at 0% zoom or no zoom, the image is at the same size you can see with the naked eye from the same spot and vantage point as the camcorder, and at 100% zoom or maximum zoom, the same image is now ten times larger than its original size (and part of the image may now be so big it went our of frame or out of view).

If you are talking about focal distance or in your case "focal length", that is a different issue. Most built-in camcorder lenses can focus from macro to infinity. In most cases, you can find an adapter to adapt a 35mm camera lens onto the front of the built-in camcorder lens, and then, focal length and "reach" come into play because your camera lens is based on f-stops. Several professional camcorders (such as the Sony PMW-EX3) also allow the removal of the camcorder's lens and the placement of another lens including those from 35mm cameras to be installed instead for specialized filming situations.

Are there any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

Charlize

Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I've ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

Answer
All "real" camcorders have optical zoom and digital zoom.

It sounds like you are using a very low-end flip-like or toy camcorder or a camera that is primarily used for taking stills (and happens to have a "video" feature).

MiniDV tape based camcorders provide the best available video quality - but they use firewire (not USB) to transfer video to your computer. USB is only used for transferring stills from the camcorder's memory card or webstreaming (of the camcorder has either of these features). Adding a firewire port is typically not difficult - and it is pretty cheap.
Canon ZR800, ZR950, Sony DCR-HC52, HC62 and Panasonic PV-GS320 are good, entry-level, examples.

Hard drive and flash based camcorders compress their video a lot, but the quality isn't too bad... Video is transferred using USB. Sony DCR-SR45 and Canon FS10 are examples. They typically cost more than miniDV, but that does not mean the video quality is better - compression of the video information translates into lost data and can result in reduced video quality.

In any case, when you shop for a camcorder, do not use digital zoom as a feature comparison item - because when you bring the camcorder home, your first step is to turn digital zoom off. Use only Optical zoom.

Other things to look for in a good camcorder:
Mic-in jack (optional, but very useful)
Some sort of audio manual control (again, optional, but if you think you might be recording loud audio, like bands, this will be a requirement).

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. Their video is terrible - especially for editing or uploading to the web. The discs are a pain and can be unreliable (resulting in list video).

As of June 9, 2011, what is the best camcorder for around $300, give or take $50.

Keep in mind:
-No flip cameras please
-I am an amateur film maker
-I want to shoot music videos
-Shoot short films
-Even in the hands of the shakiest person, the film is still smooth, and clear.
-Able to shoot in very lowlight areas
-Please tell me if the camera you suggested has a mic input or not

I was looking at the Samsung HMX-H300, but give me your opinions on what you think the best camera that's bang for my buck. (as of today)
I forgot to add:
-If the camcorder has the ability to take pictures, it's a plus. (Not needed though)

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

High Speed still images from video!?

Carlyn

im wanting to find a video camera capable of producing video with high enough quality that i can take stills out of the video. the reason for this is im doing some sports and want some stills of precise points of impact of a bat and a ball. and i dont want to use my dslr. i want to be able to set up a camcorder in a certain position and let it sit while i take pics of different angles with my dslr.

will any camcorder compare to what a dslr can produce ?

my budget is about $1200 but if thats unrealistic i will have to go more but shooting for 1200.

and preferably a camera that a waterproof case can be purchased for.

Answer
It's probably not a good idea.

Know why?

The highest-resolution HD video is 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. That's the equivalent of a 2-megapixel still camera. And that's the highest resolution image you could possibly pull out of a video file.
Additionally, stored digital video is "keyframed" -- the compression methods used to store digital video save an occasional full-resolution "keyframe" image, and then interpolate the succeeding images based on changes from the keyframe image for the next bunch of frames. Even the changes from the keyframe image are compressed (non-losslessly) as well. So for you to pick one arbitrary frame out very likely means you're not hitting a "keyframe," and are getting an interpolation -- so you won't even get a full 2MP image, you'll get a motion-compressed partial frame. Then there's rolling shutter artifacts, etc. to worry about...

The best way to do this is to get a sound/optical trigger, and use your DSLR. That will let you get the *exact* moment you want to capture, at high resolution and with no losses.
Here's one inexpensive piece of equipment that will help you do this:

What is a good camera for film and cinema?

andrew

Ok, I want to start making my own films. I was thinking of getting the Canon Rebel T2i but I dont know if it is a good camera. Please give me some advice, thanks! Oh and i want the price to be under $800. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

I myself am looking for the right film camera for me, but the camera you say that you are thinking of getting, is not really for filming. Yes, the cameras such as the Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 50d/7D/550D are great cameras, they are not for film. Although they shoot film, they are for picture quality, and mainly if you want to use these cameras for filming, the quality will be OKAY unless it is still footage. What you want, is a camcorder which are mainly for film.
For example, the Panasonic Pro AG-HMC150 3CCD AVCHD 24fps Camcorder (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-AG-HMC150-AVCHD-24fps Camcorder/dp/B001DKELYC/ref=pd_zg_rss_tr_e_172421_2) is slightly over the price of the Canon 7D. BUT, this camera is strictly for film, while the canon 7D, or the camera you are looking at, are basically for picture. So all in all, what you want is a camcorder and you can look at this site that gives you the "Top Rated Camcorders of 2010-2011", and it will display the price, features and reviews for many camcorders!

The Canon Rebl T2i shoots some pretty great video just as good as the Canon 7D, and I will post a link in the "sources" of some really helpful filming tips, where they are using the Rebel T2i to film the video.

But for the price under $800, I would look on that site for a handheld HD camcorder, or get the camera you want, but the Canon 7D is a very good option with proper lenses too, but the price is steep of $1500-$2000, plus $300-$400 for a good lens. :/
-Also you must remember that the camera is not what gives you good quality; it may help, but it is very minimal. You will need a good Lens for your camera to give it the best quality possible, and also look into lighting, and adjusting color contrasting and color grading when you are EDITING the film (look up some tutorials on youtube to adjust color to give it that cinematic look) so that way you have the best possible image. (I will give some links in the bottom that helped me with some film makig tips) Hope this helps :)

I'm looking for a camcorder that accepts audio in from sound mixer (via auxillary send from mixer) while recording live. Also, I would like to send the video while recording live from camcorder to projector (via HDMI). Also, I'd like to send audio/video to dvd recorder. Can all of this been done while recording live on camcorder and at the same time? If so, what camcorder can do this?

Answer
My Canon ZR camcorders (500, 800 and 930) have, when hooked to computer or when I did Paid events, such as weddings, the feed from the Main Mix Out on my Alto Audio Mixer - http://asimplelife.ca/specs.html fed into the MIC jack on the camcorder. These are not HDMI camcorders, so to hook to a Projector, I would use the AV jack, and Y cable, one to the Projector and one to the DVD recorder. Easy to do.

I have seen some that capture 720p at 60 fps. I assume this will look great in an HD tv, but are there any that capture true HD, 1080i at 30 or 60 fps? Appreciate any info.

Answer
There are digital compact to high zoom cameras now available that can record video in HD (1280x720 @ 30fps) or FULL HD (1920x1080) @ 30fps. They also allow HDMI connection to a HD TV.

One (still image) camera that records in Full HD (and stereo audio) is Canon's SX1 IS (10MP, 20x optical zoom). Video file sizes at this resolution are big (approx. 1GB per 3 minutes of video).

If you want the ability to record in Full HD and also 5.1 channel surround sound, you will need to look at a Full HD camcorder, instead.

What kind of memory amount do you recommend for HD video?

Brian John

I am going to be purchasing an High Definition video recorder of some sort soon, and I was wondering what type of memory capacity I should get. It will be on a memory card of some kind like a microSD or similar.

So lets say you have 1 hour of 720p video at 30 fps, how much memory would that take?

What about 60 fps?

Answer
I would consider Sony HDR-CX110 High Definition Handycam Camcorder

* Memory Stick PRO Duo media slot
* 1/4" back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS sensor
* 1080/60p playback via HDMI and compatible HDTV
* 30mm CZ Vario Sonnar T* with 25x Optical zoom

The 2hr battery charges full time but it only lasts about 7mins. How do I fix this? DO NOT TELL ME TO GET A NEW CAMERA. I'm 14 and its the only camera i can afford. I love being able to pull out the vhs tape and go strait to the tv without uploading or burning a disk. How do I fix this I want to record the super moon tomorrow.

Please don't make fun of me, I have already had comments such as "Here comes channel 10.".

Answer
Hi "N.A.":

First, you only need to ask a Y!A Question once. Not three times in a hour in the same Category. All the Y!A regulars check the unanswered Questions list. Learn some patience; you're probably still asleep right now. There's still twelve hours til the "super moon" comes up. [And guess what? The moon's coming back up on Sunday night, too! Betcha can't tell the difference.]

And there will be a "super moon" next year (June 23), just like last year: http://www.space.com/11178-supermoon-photos-2011-skywatcher-images.html

Fellow Contributor "AV Daddy" has given the most-practical advice on one of your other Q&A's on this topic: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmpyZmYVvfBNxCv7LVOvTa6SHwx.;_ylv=3?qid=20110210042937AAK6CVa [Use an extension cord & power the camera from the charger. I'd add "Take the bad battery out, so it doesn't load-down the power supply."]

Second, on your other two Questions, you don't need to YELL in all caps. That piece of courtesy is older than the internet (I come from the old dial-up BBS community days.) We could tell you were "14" without you even telling us. Don't act like a little screaming kid, and you won't get treated like one.

Third, feel free to use the "Additional Details" link to tell us exactly what model # RCA VHS Camcorder it is (it's on the bottom plate where the tripod mounts). And what the exact model # is on the "charger" unit. Some folks (like me) actually owned and worked on those camcorders back then, and can tell you if the charger can be used as an external power supply (with an extension cord) to get you through your project tonight.

And stick around for the meteor shower caused by Halley's Comet debris, after you're done staring at the moon. "Super moon" will hit actual perigee & fullness around 11:35p EDT, but the atmosphere & optical illusions will make it look redder & "bigger" at moonrise (just after 7:45p EDT). If you get clouds, then set your alarm for 5am and watch it set in the west.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Q. I want to get an HD camcorder for under $600 or a consumer non HD camcorder for under $400, I want to get a camcorder that has awesome clarity to shoot sponsor videos, and is a Flash Memory or MiniDV better for snowboarding and to make DVDs. Thanks

Answer
after working in the film industry for almost 3 years and shooting snowboard/ski videos for local mountains like echo mountain, and copper mountain, here is what i have to say.

HD is not a easy rout to go. HD is a very unforgiving environment. First off, you need an HD camcorder. Those run about 1000 dollars averagely. You would also need a video editing program that supports editing in HD. Sony vegas is a common program but that runs you 500 bucks. You also need a ton of ram and a good graphics card that can process the HD video while editing. In the end you need an HD dvd burner that can burn your HD footage. If you fall short of one of these things the video in the end will not come out in true HD but will be brought down to normal SD quality. If you have the money and tools to shoot, edit, and play in HD then go for it!

I would go for miniDV any day. flash memory can only store a little data and the quality is not as supurb as mini dv

In my opinion i shot my first snowboard video on a panasonic pvgs 320. Its a great camcorder that has 3ccd's and has the best picture for a camera under 400 dollars. I currently own it and love it. If you don't want that camcorder then get something that is 3ccd. It will be making the people that watch it go WOW! 3ccd gives you supurb color and I highly reccomend it.

check out my youtube listed below. I have my first snowboard video on there and the quality may seem bitter (because its on youtube) but trust me the quality is the best for the price you pay.

also please check out my tutorial on my youtube below that shows you how to build a steadicam. that will let you ride behing your buddies and get spectacular footage thats SUPER STABLE. also invest in a wide angle for close up shots near the jumps and rails.

Alright so I want to be an ammatuer filmmaker [im 15]. I already know how to edit videos and all that sutff. I know what editing software Im buying [pinnacle studios]. I just need a camera that has good video quality and when you record, it saves to the built in hardrive or something or maybe a minidvd if its not to complicated when uploading to the computer. Something easy and simple with good video quality. But I need a good camcorder ranging from $200-$350. I cant find any! Any suggestions?
I forgot to mention that I plan on making short films. 10-30 minutes. So I hope that adds.

Answer
I have a Sony DCR-SR82 that works really well. It's not high Def but more than likely with your budget that's not an option anyway. I belive I paid $600 for mine but they make one with a smaller hard drive that's a bit cheaper. My Costco also sold mine so it came with a solid return policy.

What's the best budget rig for a professional camcorder?

Andrew B

I have a Panasonic AF100. I unfortunately blew most of my budget on the body and the lens. What's a well-built, sturdy rig I can buy for $150-$350? I know this budget is very restrictive, but I am looking for sturdy metal constructed rig that can support the weight of my camera. Most of the rigs I have seen in the price range look cheap and plastic-y.

Answer
Rig... Please define that...

For a tripod, look into something from Davis & Sanford.

For a shoulder-mount, you can make one - or look at the SpiderBrace. With your camera weighing in at about 3 pounds + the weight of the shoulder mount, your arms will get tired pretty fast.

If you are looking for a hand-held stabilizer, again, the weight will get to you after a few minutes.

If you are looking for something like a "Fig-Rig" from Manfrotto, the 595b should be fine and it is in your price range - again, expect your arms to get tired pretty quickly when capturing long segments. It will work well for short segments.

Please define what sort of "rig" you are looking for. Any decent vest system, including Steadycam/Glidecam/Varizoom type or overhead cable systems will be about 8x more than you want to spend.

What is the best Waterproof HD camera for the buck? I am going on a cruise and am in the pool often and i am looking for an HD video camera that is waterproof. I was very interested in the Kodak Play Sport that just came out. Its is only $150. My price range is below or around $200. I already have a sony tx1 that I use for other hd videos and pictures. So this is like a secondary "fun" camera that i can be rough with especially in the water. Thanks!

Answer
Get the Panasonic TS1.

You can see the kind of video it'll take from the link below.

p/s It uses AVCHD format -- which is okay for Windows 7 or latest Mac. But not okay if you have an old pc.

What is a good video camera for making Youtube videos in 360p?

Charles

I'm wanting to make better quality videos and I need a good camera instead of my phone.

Answer
There are many small pocket sized camcorders such as the Flip cameras, the play sport camcorders made by Kodak, the Bloggie of the HD Bloggie by Sony. The nice thing about the flip is that it is made specifically for people who want to do a majority of you tube video usage. the down side to the flip is that once you fill up the internal flash memory on the flip you are out of luck unless you have access to a computer to dump the memory, especially if you are using the HD you will not get too much time. the Kodak play sport has 2 different models one of them is water proof up to 10 feet and it has the capability to use SD cars so that you can cary extras with you so that you do not have worry as much about running out of space you will get much more recording time on the units. Both the bloggie and the other mode are going to be similar to the waterproof play sport but does not have the waterproof capabilities. Go to this web site and it will show you the difference between three of the 6 models i was telling you about

I hope that this helps you a little bit and it helps you make up your mind!

Good Luck

Is The "Flip" Slide HD Video Camera Great Or Does It Suck?

CHIEFS 4 L

I am getting the flip slide video camera for my brother and i was wondering is it better than the other flip cameras. is the slide one the best, and how does it preform.

Answer
Depends on what you are using it for...

If you are using it for any kind of action sports then... ITS SUCKS
If you need to capture good audio quality bits then... ITS SUCKS
If you are wanting to upgrade to an "HD" camera and think this is going to do the job... Forget it...

This camera along with all other flip, slide, and small handheld "HD" cameras offer a crappy 480p resolution AT BEST, not the 720p-1080p they boast to have (quality is more than a file type). Obviously since they are so small, any interference in sound (wind, bumps, thuds, laughing in the background when someone busts their face open) is maximized dramatically...

Now if your little brother or whatever he is, is just kind of a chill dude who wants to take some funny videos, play around, doesn't really need a quality camera, then for the price this camera is one of the better cameras of its type.

Again, compared to other flip/handeld/mini HD cameras, this is one of the better cameras. Just dont expect the video to stun you and dont expect to capture your bands newest music video in any kind of HD audio or video quality.

Oh and another good thing about this camera is that its SUPER easy and fast to upload your videos to the web...

Does anyone have a sample video of this cheap ebay action cam?

=======
720p video files for 70-bucks are not going to be excellent..
But may be worthy of the ability to carry this camera around../
I did not read--that the waterproof case--actually comes with the camera../
(the waterproof case may be a separate item)
Its a 1.3 MegaPixel camera..
That's OK--for video..
But total junk--on jpgs.

ANSWERS, what is the best camcorder for snowboarding, READ BELOW?
