Can someone help me find a camcorder that allows for good sound quality?

Hi!

I'm looking for a camcorder cheaper than £350 that has good sound quality, as I want to record live classical music. I know this means I need an external mic, so if someone knows of a camcorder which is good and allows for external mic, plus a mic worth spending money on, please let me know :)

What is needed is manual audio gain control and good location of the mic(s).

It also depends on what sort of classical music. Solo, duet, trio, quartet, chamber music, etc. will have requirements different than a full orchestra.

There are a few entry level Canon camcorders (FS series, maybe one in the MV series) that have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack. But they do not have manual audio gain control.

The reason you need manual audio gain control is that even acoustic - classical - music can get loud enough to overdrive the automatic audio gain circuit - the result will be muddy audio and "static" (audio peaking at the loud passages).

Just because a camcorder has a mic jack, that does not mean it also has manual audio control.

It is possible to use the camcorder's internal built-in mics successfully - but the location of the camcorder (hence the location of the mics) is important because of the stereo separation and balance. With external mics, they can be located away from the camcorder... But even built-in mics need manual audio control. I guess the point I am trying to make is external mics are not a "hard and fast rule".

There are some Sony camcorders in your budget range that have a very rudimentary "MicRefLevel" menu toggle for "Normal" or "Low" gain. I am not aware of any SOny camcorders in your budget range that have an audio-in jack. There are some Canon camcorders in your price range that have a similar "Mic Attenuation" toggle.

The least expensive camcorder - of which I am am aware - with a mic jack and more granular manual audio control is the Canon HV40.

Another option is to use whatever camcorder you want - but record the audio with an external audio "field recorder" like those from Zoom, Edirol, Tascam, M-Audio and many others. These generally have built-in mics - and can connect external mics if required. All have manual audio control. When you import the video for editing, import the audio from the field recorder, sync the audio, then mute the audio that came in with the video...

I am looking for a pretty good camcorder around 300-350(go low if you can). I am most likely going to use it to put videos on youtube so I would like decent audio quality and I would probobly like one of the ones where the video is stored on a hard drive. I am also looking for one that is a pretty good deal!

Anything that uses Mini DV tape and Windows Movie Maker (part of Windows XP's add-ons). Very easy to work, Zero learning curve (even a Caveman can do it) Your computer will need a FireWire adapter as a USB will not work for importing vid from camera to computer.

Can even check the used market for higher quality cameras.

In fact could just as easily go with a really cheap-o if all you are doing is making pointless stupid U-Tube vid's.

I want to get started in filmmaking. What camcorder shall I get?

Alright so I want to be an ammatuer filmmaker [im 15]. I already know how to edit videos and all that sutff. I know what editing software Im buying [pinnacle studios]. I just need a camera that has good video quality and when you record, it saves to the built in hardrive or something or maybe a minidvd if its not to complicated when uploading to the computer. Something easy and simple with good video quality. But I need a good camcorder ranging from $200-$350. I cant find any! Any suggestions?
I forgot to mention that I plan on making short films. 10-30 minutes. So I hope that adds.

I have a Sony DCR-SR82 that works really well. It's not high Def but more than likely with your budget that's not an option anyway. I belive I paid $600 for mine but they make one with a smaller hard drive that's a bit cheaper. My Costco also sold mine so it came with a solid return policy.

What's the best budget rig for a professional camcorder?

I have a Panasonic AF100. I unfortunately blew most of my budget on the body and the lens. What's a well-built, sturdy rig I can buy for $150-$350? I know this budget is very restrictive, but I am looking for sturdy metal constructed rig that can support the weight of my camera. Most of the rigs I have seen in the price range look cheap and plastic-y.

For a tripod, look into something from Davis & Sanford.

For a shoulder-mount, you can make one - or look at the SpiderBrace. With your camera weighing in at about 3 pounds + the weight of the shoulder mount, your arms will get tired pretty fast.

If you are looking for a hand-held stabilizer, again, the weight will get to you after a few minutes.

If you are looking for something like a "Fig-Rig" from Manfrotto, the 595b should be fine and it is in your price range - again, expect your arms to get tired pretty quickly when capturing long segments. It will work well for short segments.

Please define what sort of "rig" you are looking for. Any decent vest system, including Steadycam/Glidecam/Varizoom type or overhead cable systems will be about 8x more than you want to spend.
