What would be the best HD video camera for filming action?

good hd video camera for sports

good hd video camera for sports image

Talon

I need to film myself playing drums. Ideally the camera doesn't have to have any features, like zoom or any editing stuff, except recording because I'm just going to set it up on a tripod in a fixed spot. I just need a video camera that can record fast action well and has a sharp picture.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event i have aver been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 second or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer.

Just to add to Number 2 from up above, the movements of you playing your drums would not look good on a consumer level HD camcorder at all.

What is the best semi profesional video camera?

Caleb

I am looking for a semi professional video camera that shoots 1080p HD. The two things it needs to have a mic input and either a built in memory or a SD card slot (preferably a SD card slot but not necessary). I would like it to be able to take both 30 fps and 60 (it would be nice but not necessary). I don't have a opinion as to what brand but it needs to be around the $1000 or less range.

Answer
semi professional, its a lot of perception, like is the glass half full or half empty. if a camera is not professional, then it is consumer grade, period. If you want to think that a consumer camera is "just like" a pro camera but costs less then that is your perception. but for a reality check, remember that's not true.

the first point is no professional camcorder uses SD cards for media. Those are ok for still shots, but they require super compression of video by a codec that does not hold up to professional use. And professional videographers shoot for the purpose of making money, not "prestige". They need to usually provide a client with a DVD of the finished work. The only consumer HD format that can make decent DVDs is the miniDV based HDV type which is not SD card or under $1000. When Sony invented AVCHD, it was never intended for pro use, but for people to show off home movies directly from the camera without editing. Same can be said for H.264 which is a public variant of Sony proprietary AVCHD. Having a mic input does not magically result in HiFi sound if the memory card based camcorder compresses the bejeebers out of the audio, and all do. Speaking of editing, AVCHD and H.264 have no support for timecode.

for the purpose of making DVDs, whether wedding/event, music video or action sport genres, the weapon of choice is miniDV. You can still get a consumer miniDV camera, the Canon ZR960 has a retail price way under $1000. It shoots in 16:9 so once it is on DVD, it will look better than any consumer SD card based HD camera.

What are some pocket camcorders worth checking out up to £200?

Anonymous_

I'm interested in getting a pocket camcorder for up to about £200 for doing guitar covers on Youtube. The Zoom Q3HD seems like a good choice for its awesome built in microphones, but I've heard it is rather cheap-feeling and doesn't record video as well as it should (though it seems to do it fairly well). So, is there anything at a similar price that records high quality sound, but with better video and build?

Answer
Although pocket camcorders are not the best quality I would say that if you are just staring off making videos for youtube they will fit the bill. For the price you can get started making some videos and see what tweaks you need to make. Once you become more familiar with making videos you can decide on whether a minDV or HD camcorder is right for you. Unfortunately many of the manufacturers are moving to tape less recording (if they haven't already) and most digital devices have quality that is just as good as tape. As far as a good pocket camcorder you want to look at the choices on this website. They are some of the best and most reliable devices on the market. You can get them at a really low price as well. If you decide to go with a full consumer or por camcorder in the future these models can be used for back up devices to capture extra angles.

I am looking to purchase a new camcorder. I currently own a panasonic VHS-C camcorder. Right now I am recording on these tapes and then dubbing them with my DVD recorder.
I run my own website and I want to put videos on my website. Here is what I would need:
- Good night recording, for fireworks and such
- Good day quality recording
- Image stabilization
- Good sound recording
- Fairly easy to use
- Prefer small over large body
- Ability to put video onto website pretty easily, not a must
- Good battery life
- Good zoom

Still photos are not important to me.

I heard that with Mini DV you can plug into DVD recorder with a cable and record the video onto the DVD. I was originally looking into a DVD-cam, but the DVD-cam reviews don't seem to be good. I don't know which I should get. I'm also not sure which models are the best.

I prefer to stay under $400, so I would like to know the best models under $400, I'm willing to go higher, so better models would be welcome.
Editing is not something I will need to do with my video, so I don't think that a hard drive cam is right for me.

The most important things for me is the overall video quality, something that record good/great in most situations.

Second, I want to be able to get my video on media that is universal. This is why the DVD cam interested me at first, but have since changed my mind based on reviews. But I heard on TV that there is a cable that can be plugged into my DVD player and I can record directly from the camera to DVD. Is this true and if so, is this cable included?

Any more advice on what camera to get would really be appreciated. I'm trying to get an idea of my options before I make my purchase.

What is a good camera for taking skateboarding stills?

Dirty Dan

I have been filming with a camcorder for a while but i would like to start taking stills. I was thinking of mabe getting the Canon EOS Rebel T1i
What do you guys think?

Answer
I think Jim is very correct about the goodness of a Canon Rebel. However, I have been using a much more inexpensive camera that takes beautiful still shots. It is in fact not a digital SLR, so you don't need to worry about buying a very expensive lens with adequate zoom. The Camera I have is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 and it has a 18 power zoom with very crisp image stabilization. It shoots the same 10.1 megapixles as the Canon Rebel and provides many shooting modes. Another good feature about this camera is that it can even shoot HD video in a widescreen format. This Panasonic Lumix I have costs almost half as much as the Rebel and is more portable, lightweight, and has a excellent zoom range built in. A very nice site helped me make a decision on this camera which is www.cameralabs.com
for a review on it: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_FZ28/

Also when you're on this review page be sure to check out the video tour tab.
I have used this camera for filming video and pictures of my friends skating. It works very well for skating and keeps my shots stable while I'm riding my longboard and while I focus the lens on my friends skating while they are moving. As you can see, this camera is very capable because I can move, my friends can move and the camera remains with a clear and sharp image. When you first get the camera, be sure you turn on auto focus, and have image stabilization on. Another nice thing about this groovy camera is when you take pictures in certain modes, it will track the faces of people so you'll get a good shot. I love this camera! You can find it on amazon for about $275. Hope this helps!

What's the best external webcam in the market today?

Qusai

I've read a lot of reviews about different webcams, but I'm still confused.I guess I need recommendations based on a personal experience.

Answer
Be advised that you aren't restricted to only webcams. If the drivers are available for your system (Macs don't have the problem, but Windows machines do.) Many camcorders have either a Firewire or USB cable that can tie them to a computer. Any decent camcorder will have better video than the best webcam. Mount it on a small tripod so it points at you from just above, or to the side of your monitor and you're in business. I use a Sony Handicam with great results.

Be advised that some "chat" sites only support specific models of cameras. Check the sites you want to use to see if you can use any or only specific models.

I am going to start making youtube videos and wanted to know what was the best video camera to invest in. I keep seeing that everyone is suggesting the flip video cameras, is that really a good video camera? I want the camera to be under $500. Im looking for best quality video camera. Thank you!

Answer
I suggest the Kodak PlaySport Zx3.

The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.

Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.

Lows
Fair audio quality and battery life.

The camera I have now is and old Kodak and it doesn't take very good pictures or videos. Inside the barn isn't terribly dark, but it's not super bright and my camera makes everything look really dark anyway. If you zoom in while taking a video, it speeds up that part of the footage. What's a reasonably priced video camera[that also takes pictures? (:] that is good for what I need it for?
Thanks!

Answer
any of the canon rebels are good. more importantly it is the lens that creates the photo.
i would check into a lens with zoom and image stabilization.
i paid $150 for a 700 to 300 ml, 3.4 speed lens.
the slower the lens the crappier the phot and the less light it can use. 2.6 is great for racing shots, 3.4 is good for dressage and show jumping and anything slower then that is 4.8 is about as slow a lens as you will want. shoot with it on the sports setting to keep it simple.
check ebay and craigslist for deals.

The camcorder has a value to me. The deck won't open on a full size VHS camcorder. I thought if i could cover some sensor into thinking a tape was loaded, I could use the camera for a live feed.
The camcorder is an old Hitachi VM-2100A with a full size VHS.

Answer
video cameras of that vintage should make a picture in the viewfinder and the AV output without a tape loaded. the fact that the door doesn't open either indicates a major power problem. the battery is dead or the AC adaptor has failed.

What is the cheapest yet best for the price camcorder that is compatible with a Mac, for our son?

Shree P

Our 12 year old wants a camcorder but we dont want to pay a crazy price in case he loses it. But we also dont want to give him crap. It has to be compatible with a mac and would like a mic with it.

Thankx a bunch.!
WITH a viewfinder.

Answer
Which Mac?

Define "crazy price". This means different things to different people.

Not many with viewfinders in the consumer space. Most are only LCD panel.

All consumer cams have a mic built-in. Better camcorders add a mic jack (in addition to the built-in mics) to connect an external mic. Even better, the higher-end camcorders have audio control (and mic jack - and the internal mics) that can be manually adjusted to deal with too loud or too soft audio.

$150 - $250 "Pocket cameras". Flip, Xacti, Zi8
$300 - $500 entry level consumer. Canon FS series; ZR960. Standard definition.
$600 - $800 mid trange consumer. Canon HF series; a few Panasonics.
$900 - $1,300 high end consumer. Canon HF S series, HV40; Sony HDR-HC9
$1,500 - $3,000 prosumer. Sony HDR-FX7; HDR-FX1000

Notice how the lenses and imaging chips start small and get larger as the $ go up. Bigger lenses and imaging chips = better low light behavior. Also not very few manual controls (especially on the out side of the camcorder) at the low end - and more as the $ go up so the manual controls are no longer buried in a menu.

And yes, I have known 12-year-olds who would be responsible with the upper end gear - as well as 12-year-olds I would not trust with anything - so it depends on the child, too...

Answer
You can consider Sony Bloggie Touch (MHS-TS20/B) - 8 GB, 2 Hours NEWEST MODEL (Black)

1920x1080 HD MP4 recording: The Bloggie Touch camera lets you record your favorite moments anytime, anywhere. Using the MP4 format, the Bloggie Touch shoots video in 1920x1080 high definition, as well as captures 12.8MP still images
12.8MP still images: Enjoy capturing clear, crisp still photos at 12.8MP resolution. The high resolution yields incredible detail while giving you the flexibility for large prints and cropping
Capacitive touch-screen LCD: The touch screen LCD utilizes an easy to use touch & slide method for searching through your videos and pictures
3.0" LCD with vertical/horizontal operation: The 3.0" touch screen LCD (measured diagonally) will rotate its orientation automatically; however you hold the camera - horizontally, vertically, left, right, even upside down
Up to 4 hours HD video: Record and store up to four hours of high-definition video footage (default setting) to the Bloggie Touch camera's 8GB of built-in flash memory

Why does the sony bloggie take a long time to load pictures?

OK so i just got the new 1080 HD sony bloggie, i installed all the software, but whe does it take SSOOOOOO long for the pictures and videos to import? I plug it in and it says loading pictures one moment please... but its soo long...what do i do?

Answer
You wait for it. Your camera hook up via USB and USB is not know as the fastest transfer protocol. And you should read the rest here it has info you could use.

Quickly, HD is a marketing term. If they told you this is a highly compressed format that is a step backward from good old MiniDv and developed because most consumers can't (or don't care to) understand the tape format and editing.

A $2000 HD camera will record 11 gigs of data per hour. Little old 720 X 480 MiniDv gets 13 gigs/hour. That is 15% More data for 1/6th the frame size.

What is even more important for you, however, is how the HD creates a crappy picture. HD relies on reference frames, as few as 2 each second. The remaining 28 frames record only a predetermined level of change, and "interpolate" (mathematically guess) the differences between frames. Disaster for action sports.

MiniDv formats are uncompressed in the brightness channel, and have low compression in the less important color channel. The little compression is "inter-frame". No frame relies on its neighbor for image data.

The end result is you can take footage from a MiniDv camera and up-convert it to 1920 x 1080 and still have a better image quality that footage shot in HD.

You can get a new Canon ZR960 for $250. You will need a few tapes and a firewire cable.

Otherwise, look at the used market. You should easily be able to find a used Z or elura series. I'd be skeptical of a GL-1 going that cheap, but you never know. I've known a lot of people that got a GL for a single trip or wedding.

Anyway, look into the format. At $200 with a HD camcorder you likely will max out at 4-5 gigs/hour, which is really shooting yourself in the foot for quality.

You would need to add about $3100 to get a clear quality advantage over standard def, MiniDv.

How do I transfer video clips from Windows to iMovie?

I recorded some video on a Panasonic camcorder. However, iMovie does not seem to recognize the camera and won't let me import the clips. My friend has Windows Vista, and he can import them onto his computer. However, I want to edit them in iMovie. Is there a way to transfer the video clips from his computer to mine via the Internet, while still maintaining full quality?

Answer
iMovie will automatically detect when you have a FireWire camcorder connected. If you see the message No Camera Attached, make sure your camera is turned on and properly plugged in to your computer via a FireWire cable and that your camcorder is set to VCR, VTR, or Play mode.

Another way to import vids to iMovie is to convert the file to mp4 or mov format first. You can't read the vid even it's sent from your friend's PC. I use iskysoft video converter and the quality is state-of-the-art! http://www.iskysoft.com/video-converter-mac.html

Is there any way to transfer video from a samsung sc-d382 min dv camcorder to my iMac without using iMovie 09?

dcmediaman

I have a firewire 400 cable with a 400 to 800 adapter. My iMac is the 27in. version. I can record to iMovie 09 using the camcorder and firewire cable, but cannot send video from the camcorder to iMovie 09. Can I use a video coverter, Quicktime Pro, or other built-in app?

Answer
When you are moving DV-format video from the miniDV camcorder to the computer, the computer Imports - or Captures - the video. DV format video is compressed and the camcorder's processor does the decompression and the video is saved to the iMovie (MOV) file format.

You are correct, the miniDV tape based camcorder does not "send" the DV format video to the computer - the computer takes the video from the camcorder.

QuickTime Pro won't do what you want, either.

Final Cut (Express or Pro) will behave the same way iMovie does...

I am not aware of any application that will just stream the DV-format video data (no importing, no decompression) straight from the camcorder to the computer. This is not platform-spacific - the same is the case for Windows video editing for miniDV tape based camcorders, too. Importing is a real-time activity when working with miniDV tape.

The only way I know of to do what I *think* you need in order to do what you want is to record the DV format video straight to a specialized external hard drive - Focus Enhancements makes the FireStore series. This way, the DV forrmat video data is written directly to the FireStore drive when you connect the camcorder to the FireStore with a firewire cable. When video aquisition is complete, power everything down, connect the FireStore external drive to the iMac, power up, and work with the DV format files... Sony has a external video storage unit, too - but I don't know if it will work with your Samsung miniDV camcorder. These specialized external storage devices are not inexpensive...

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

Hi Folks,

I am much interested in photography since my childhood. But till I was using Canon A3100 Point and Shoot camera.

I am willing to buy an entry level DSLR as I am an amateur. I googled much but arrived in a confusion. I have shortlisted 2 models. Please suggest the best one.

1) Canon 600 D - heard many positive reviews, but lens cost is more and there is no auto focus in video mode.

2) Sony SLT A58 - heard that lens costs cheaper. But is it rare in market ? I think auto focus in video mode is available.

Answer
Actually Canon has some great value priced lenses. Sony has limited line up of lenses and they are normally expensive.
Here is an article that should help you with your first DSLR purchase:
http://photography-with-any-camera.blogspot.com/2013/05/best-digital-slr-for-beginners.html

Also, don't buy a camcorder for video as one answerer suggested unless you don't care much about quality. With a right lens, an SLR will take much better video than any consumer grade camcorder. With SLR you can do selective focusing but a camcorder will give you flat videos- everything always in focus. Here is another read for you:

Time to upgrade, but to what?

Hi,
I have been shooting videos for almost 4 years with the same camera, the sony HDR-SR12 but I came to the point where I want more control, more options.
The camera I am looking for is the panasonic gh3 or black magic pocket cinema camera.
The panasonic gh3 seems very promising with its ability to record in ALL-I and 72 Mbits mov file, but the sensor size is small and the color space is quite poor. (8 bits 4:2:0)
In the other hand, the black magic pocket cinema camera is very portable, is able to interchange lenses, can record on raw files, and can record with 13 dynamic range which is incredible for its price! Again, I am not sure how the 16 mm sensor will affect the overall image quality.
I am well aware that coming from my sony hdr sr12 camera it will be a huge step up, but I would like to make every bucks I have worth it.
I shoot videos mainly for narrative, but for the upcoming project I will do a documentary film.
Also, how about Nikons and Canons?
Lastly my budget is 1500$, but I could wait and save money if needed.
Thank you for your generous inputs.

What microphone is good for my camcorder?

Mike Terfo

I have a Canon FS20 camcorder and I don't like the little buzzing sound it makes when recording and the audio isn't that good. I want to find a new microphone for this camera. Any suggestions?

Answer
There is no single "best mic"

The FS20, flash memory, consumer camcorder, has built-in stereo mics - and no manual audio control.

Since we don't know what the video/audio capture environment is that is causing the "little buzzing" you report, it is a bit of a challenge to suggest anything without having to buy something. Because we know the camcorder uses "auto mic gain" to control the audio levels recorded, we also know that if the audio levels are low, the auto mic gain will turn up the gain while "listening" for audio. This can result in the "buzzing" you report being recorded.

The FS20 also has a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio-in jack to connect an external mic. If the audio you are capturing is "normal level" (not loud bands and not someone 10 feet away whispering), then a stereo condenser mic is probably a good idea. If the audio is really loud, then you need a way to control the audio level so it is not overpowering the auto mic gain. If the audio is from far away or very low, then you want to be able to get the mic closer to the audio source without having the camera so close.

What is your budget?

Since the FS20 does not have an accessory shoe to mount a mic, you need to add one. A camera bracket (search "camera bracket" at amazon to understand what I mean). The Bower or Adorama camera brackets are inexpensive and add two accessory shoes to your camcorder. Then you can add a condenser stereo like the Audio Technica PRO-24CM.

Or... if the audio is low, getting the mic closer to the audio source might mean using a wireless lavaliere. They are expensive. But best are UHF and a portable base station that mounts to the accessory shoe you added. I use Sennheiser G3 systems.

If the audio is loud, you can use an XLR adapter (with XLR connecting mics) like the BeachTek DX-A2T or juicedLink units to control the mic gain, but that gets expensive, too... need to get mics, too.

How much waste would an independent accounting agent find if they audited the government?

STEEL

We keep hearing about debt ceilings, deficits, sequesters, budget cuts, and we're constantly being threatened with shorter school days and fewer public services like cops and firefighters if we don't vote to support higher taxes. But I wonder how many BILLIONS in waste we would fine if we were to hire the best accounting company in the country to audit the federal government? How much ridiculous WASTE do you think they would find?

Here are just a few examples:

* Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties.

* Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them â costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually â fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve!

* A GAO audit classified nearly half of all purchases on government credit cards as improper, fraudulent, or embezzled. Examples of taxpayer-funded purchases include gambling, mortgage payments, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, Internet dating services, and Hawaiian vacations.

* Federal agencies are delinquent on nearly 20 percent of employee travel charge cards, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

* The federal government owns more than 50,000 vacant homes.

* Members of Congress have spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars supplying their offices with popcorn machines, plasma televisions, DVD equipment, ionic air fresheners, camcorders, and signature machines â plus $24,730 leasing a Lexus, $1,434 on a digital camera, and $84,000 on personalized calendars.

I am going to attend an indoor sporting event and would like to use the movie mode to record some of it. My previous camera filmed movies at 320x240 resolution and the clips came out dark so I am trying to avoid that problem with this camera. There are two different movie resolution modes with this camera- 320x240 and 640 x 480 at 30 or 15 frames per second. I don't understand the difference between the two and the frames per second.

Answer
640x480 @ 30fps is the best quality/resolution available for recording movies. It's the camera's default setting and it's the one you should use. If you record at only 15fps, the video will be very choppy/jerky (and the 320x240 resolution will result in a smaller sized movie).

You should be using a high speed SD card for shooting movies, because movie recording is processor intensive. Something like Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III SD cards are excellent.

High quality movies (640x480 @ 30fps) eat up card space quickly (8 minutes per 1GB). This is because Canon does not overly compress their video, which means better looking movies.
Make sure you have the digital zoom turned Off...only use the optical zoom. You can't optically zoom during recording, only before you start recording.

Your camera is also capable of fast frame rate recording (320x240 @ 60fps). This would only be used for recording very fast moving subjects (movies are limited to 1 minute at a time).

good luck...

Whatâs a nice camera to start out with for an upcoming photographer?

g

Hi, I would love to one day become a photographer. Maybe not as my dominant career, but something more like a passion or hobby. Iâm currently an undergraduate studying psychology with hopes of one day becoming a college professor or following some career path in the field of psychology. I purchased a cell phone a few months ago, and I love taking photos with it. I take photos of everything. The sky, trees, landscapes, grass, puddles, flowers, insects, animals, lakes, miscellaneous objects, people, bridges, traffic, houses, cars, etc. I would love to have a much better camera, though, to capture it all.
Any recommendations for a nice camera or what I should look for when choosing a camera? My current budget is around $500. I apologize for having such a low budget, but thatâs all I have as of right now. I would love if you were able to recommend a nice camera thatâs even cheaper than my budget, but if not, thatâs okay too. Thank you.

Answer
However having bought and used several DSLRs and Hybrid/Mirrorless Cameras over last 2-3 years, I can say that all modern day DSLRs or Mirrorless are very capable cameras. You won't go wrong buying anyone of them.
However if you want to buy the best your $500 can buy, I would say buy Pentax K-01. As most people use Nikon or Canon, most of them would tell you to buy a Canon or a Nikon. However having used them too, I can say Pentax K-01 will be best value for you. Currently, Pentax K-01 are being cleared out. They were being sold for around $900 last year but company's gamble with body design didn't work well so now Pentax is clearing them out around $400. At this cost, this is the best deal out there. This camera has better image quality than any Canon or Nikon under $1000. The lens that it comes with is also high quality and would do nice low light or indoor videos. Pentax has stopped making them and once the current stock goes away, the opportunity will also go away to own a great camera for under $500. With Pentax, you can use any of their old lenses on K-01 and this camera offers nice features for manual shooting. Besides that, K-01 offers more features then entry level Nikon, Canon or Sony DSLRs.
Check specs and reviews on Amazon:

Whichever camera you decide to buy, here are some Tips to get the best out of your first DSLR.

1) Read photography blogs or tips online to be a better photographer. Any camera can do only limited things but with some tips, you will be able to take your camera to the next level. You will have better chances for better photos.
2) Buy some prime fast lens like 35mm or 50mm with F1.8 or so. For Canon or Nikon, you can get one for around $100-$150. For Pentax, you can use a Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 for around $100- one of the best lenses ever made. With these lenses, your DSLR will be able to take photos in low light too. Plus for taking photos for people and pets, they give nice bokeh- background blurring that you see in portraits taken by professionals.
3) Read your camera manual. You will be amazed to know how much your camera can do besides that AUTO button.
4) Work with your camera. Your camera can do only certain things for you. When you are taking a photo, it tries to guess what it is shooting and would set up Aperture, Shutterspeed, ISO, color mode etc to shoot a photo for you. Many times that piece of glass (I mean lens) and that sensor does not know that you shooting in backlight or in snow. It does not kow if you are taking photo outside in broad sunlight or indoor well-lit place. If camera does not know accurately what it is shooting, it will probably give you a bad photo. Now instead of blaming your camera for a bad photo, if you are willing to work with your camera, your camera can take better photos for you. Learn some basic photography tips and help out your camera when it struggles. Set a proper mode like Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Sports and tell your camera where and what you are shooting. If you camera takes too bright or too dark photos, set the Exposure Compensation and tell camera to take less or more light. With your little help, you and your camera can make a great pair and together you will be able to take better photos.

Difference between Flip Camera and Flip Camcorder? I wanna make Youtube of my college life..?

but i want it to be small so dont look awkward while recording things in front of people
AND WHAT DO U RECOMMEND?! nothin too expensive, sorta on a budget

Answer
Hi Diane:

You're about a year or two behind the times. Cisco stopped making the Flip almost 2 years ago (April 2011). And another popular pocket-cam series (the Kodak PlaySport and PlayTouch) were dropped this past year.

People tend use "camera" and "camcorder" interchangeably (unfortunately) since so many point-and-shoot cameras can also take videos. All the "Flip" models were designed as camcorders. They also took so-so still photos.

Same camera/camcorder, different noun.

You really need to SAY what your budget is, in dollars, since "too expensive" varies from person to person. Paris Hilton's idea of "too expensive" is probably way-different from yours or mine.

This past Fall, a wearable "document my life" time-lapse camera called the Autographer came out (there are others like it, too) that would capture your whole day in a series of thousands of photos, without you having to think about it. At $650, it's probably out of your ballpark price range, but here's an article describing it in DP Review: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/24/omg-life-creates-autographer-wearable-automatic-camera

For about half that price, PivotHead makes decent HD video sunglasses (you can get clear & tinted lenses, and girly-color frames, too). $299 is the list price, and other companies make cheap (like Cobra's $60 model on HSN) versions of "spy-glasses". Here's PivotHead's website: http://pivothead.com/products

Until you come back with another Additional Details update, I'll suggest that you can still find Kodak PlaySport Zx3 and Zx5 models online and at places like BigLots for under $100 ($69-$99, when in stock). These were typically $189 camcorders when they first came out, and worked much better than any of the Flip models.

Most of the other under-$100 camcorders are junk. And most camera phones that can shoot video work better than the other "pocket cams" out there.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Most people still recommend the Sony vx2100 and vx2000, I was planning on using a vx21 Because Baker skateboards use it still, im just wondering how Standard could be better than Hd so i can back up If someone tells me hd is better.

Answer
quality is more than pixel deep. all consumer HD camcorders use extreme compression, like 100:1 or more. when you throw out that many bytes, something has to give. like entire frames of video. most HD cameras take only 1 actual picture for every 8 frames, on playback the missing frames are artificially reconstructed by interpolation. that process works ok if there is no motion, but for action sports it sucks.

miniDV cameras employ a 6:1 compression scheme. that small compression allows it to keep all the frames, so it can handle motion very well. having lots of pixels is not an advantage if the pixels are all blurry because of action.

Is SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD Card Memory Card a lot better then the normal SanDisk 2GB SD ?

Dom

I'm thinking of which one to buy for my camera, but I don't know which one to get. Money doesn't really matter, as I can get the Normal one for £8 and the Extreme for £12

Is the extreme much better then the normal one, or just slightly better?

Answer
Only if you are shooting video on a P&S camera or if you are shooting "shootgun" method action shots. Most sports and action photographers shoot at the peak of action, so shooting at high fps speeds (the reason for highspeed cards) is not necessary.

You can test for yourself .. buy one of each and then do your test. I have both in my cache of memory cards, but have never had to wait for my card to "catch up" and I always shoot RAW + JPEG Basic.

If you decide to spend the extra £4, check before you buy and make sure your camera supports highspeed cards. Many of the older DSLR's (three or four years old) do not support speeds over about 40x

best camcorder for sports under 500 image
Q. My budget is under 500$.

I'm mostly going to be filming vlogs with friends. No sports or people running around.

It's probably already obvious but I would like the highest resolution and sound quality for that money. I realize to have great sound quality I might need a microphone but I'll start with the camera.

It doesn't have to be super small.

Thank you.

I would like some

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What type of camcorder should I buy for movies with friends and filming sports games?

Ben S-H

I am a fifteen year old boy who wants to get a camcorder. I need it to be definently under $400. The cheaper the better, but it does need to be quality. I will be using it for movies with friends, filming sports games (example: Ultimate Frisbee), etc.

Answer
There are a number of camcorders that could easily work in your price range. The JVC Everio line has some nice hard drive based camcorders that are under $400. If you can up your budget by about $50, the best consumer camcorder in the under $500 category is the Panasonic PV-GS3xx line which has 3CCDs and will give you the best looking video image of any of the starter camcorders.

Whatever you do, steer clear of DVD camcorders if you plan to do any kind of video editing as the files are painful to work with for editing on a computer.

I haven't seen the lines on my Flip Ultra HD.

One camera that I might really get is the Kodak Playsport. The Playsport is 1080p, waterfproof, and $150 It doesn't come out until April 5.
