Answer
You can consider buying Canon VIXIA HF S200 Flash Memory Camcorder - 2010 MODEL
Pros of the Canon VIXIA H S21/20/200 camcorders vs. the HDC-TM700:
- Sound quality seems a tad better, but not much
- 3" touch screen is much larger and has much, much higher resolution
- Menu structure is better
- Still image capability is significantly better
- Video gain functionis flat out excellent and can effectively be used to increase low light sensitivity, while reducing image noise drastically
- Two SDHC card slots
- Flash is more powerful
- Has a built in video light, even though it's meek
- Hot shoe layout is much better than Panasonic, but it's a Canon proprietary design, so you can only use Canon accesories
- The standard battery is not very large (last about 80-90 minutes) quite tricky to eject, especially when you have wet or sweaty hands. It doesn't come right out when you release the lock and is hard to pull out.
- The hand loop is very chintzy and permanently mounted to the camera body (cannot be replaced if it wears out). It is not big enough for larger hands and constantly a bother.

Best settings for recording an indoor concert on a Kodak Zi8?

Brian

I have a Kodak Zi8. I will be recording an indoor rock concert at a theater. What would be the best recommended settings? 1080P or 720P/60FPS? Also should I turn the recording mic all the way up or down or keep it in the middle. I want to get the best sound possible.
Like should I turn the audio gain up or down? I have it down curently, I'm wanting to eliminate the static noise.

Answer
Does your camcorder have a Mic Port? If so, bribe the boys and girls operating the mixer for a feed out. Bring every connector known to mankind and cables to match so you can hook that to the Mic port.

No Mic port, leave the camcorder at home. You will get very little of the band and the singing, but the cheering and clapping of the 400 or so of the people around you and closest to you first, the band(s) audio last.

Take a digital audio recorder with your and then bribe the mixer operators for that feed out. Same goes for connectors and cables. Then mix video and audio in your NLE software.

Answer
Hi Ryan:

Like anything online or with computers, you need to be accurate (spell things right) with your Question in order to get an accurate Answer. But, I understood what you meant.

You are talking about a "Bell & Howell" brand camcorder. Bell & Howell used to be a well-respected movie camera & film projector brand for over 100 years. (My first home-movie camera & projector was a Bell & Howell 8mm color setup, and the first professional motion picture camera I was trained on (shooting 16mm football sports films) was a Bell & Howell with motor-drive & 400-foot film magazine.)

In 2011, a company called Vista Capital bought the rights to the B&H brand name, and now Bluestar Alliance licenses the brand to various product manufacturers who have no connection to the original company.

From my personal experience, and from reading reviews of the latest "Bell & Howell" branded camcorder imports, the features and quality are not very good.

Even though the name "Bell & Howell" used to represent good-quality movie cameras, no self-respecting professional or competent amateur would be caught using a current Bell & Howell model.

If you'll look at Bluestar Alliance's website (http://www.bluestarbrands.com/ ) you'll notice how many "Text To Be Added" or "under-construction" pages are in the menu links. That doesn't build confidence in the parent company nor the brands it represents.

hope this helps,

If anyone can tell me how to do the following it would really be appreaciated. Thanks!

Answer
Hi8 is analog. There is no USB or firewire connection. Use the AV cable you normally use to connect the camera directly to a TV. You will need an analog/digital bridge (Pinnacle Dazzle if you computer has only USB; Canopus if your computer has firewire).

Connect the camcorder to the A/D bridge with the AV cable - connect the A/D bridge to the computer with USB or firewire.

How do I get my camcorder to transfer film to my PC?

Q. I have a Mini DV camcorder that I got last Christmas, that I was told would be able to connect tom my PC. My camcorder, a Samsung SCD-353, did not come with any software for the camcorder itself, but it did give me a USB cable to hook it up to the computer with. However, whenever I try to get film from my camcorder to my PC, it does not recognize it, and I don't know what I'm missing here..

I have Ulead VideoStudio 9 SE DVD software installed, which is the only software my camera came with..

Please help! :o)

Answer
Depending on the features available in your camcorder model, here are a few things that you can do to achieve your objective:
1 -- If you have firewire port in your camcorder, get a firewire card installed in your PC and then using the s/w provided with the camcorder, transfer the video onto the pc.
2 -- If your camcorder supports USB streaming, then you can you the USB port on your PC to get the video transfered onto your PC.
3 -- If your PC has a TV tuner card, give the o/p of your camcorder to this tuner card and then get the video transfered onto your PC

I have a HITACHI ULTRAVISION DIGITAL

=] Please help!

Answer
While I'm not familiar with your exact camera (I think Hitachi calls everything "Ultravision"), I don't believe you can actually record video to a memory card (unless the camera doesn't accept a tape or DVD at all).

That memory card slot is usually used for saving photos that camcorders are often capable of taking. In other words, it's for pictures only... not video.

As I said, I'm not familiar with your camera, and would need more info to say for sure, so I could be wrong.

Hope that helps!

Why do I need a memory card for my camcorder?

Q. I bought a camcorder that has a hard drive already built in. It takes videos and saves it to its hard drive, but when I try to take pictures it says "no card found" or something like that. Why would I even need a memory card? Why can't it just save the pictures to the hard drive automatically like it does videos?

Answer
Perhaps it only stores stills on the memory card. Pretty stupid really, try reading the manual, maybe there's a way to configure it to store the stills on the HD.

Can someone help with a question concerning a DEPTH OF FIELD issue in filmmaking?

best camcorder with shallow depth of field

best camcorder with shallow depth of field image

Jackie

I'm looking at buying a new HD camcorder for indie filmmaking. My question is, do I REALLY need a 35mm adaptor to achieve the shallow depth of field look that appears in my mainstream movies at the theater?

Also, is a DoF adaptor the same thing as 35mm adaptor or are they two different types of adaptors?

Answer
A depth-of-field adapter (often shortened to DOF adapter) is used to achieve shallow depth of field on a video camera whose fixed lens or interchangeable lens selection is limited or economically prohibitive at providing such effect. These set-ups are made with a 35mm lens mount adapter (by brand and mounting configuration). Thus that allows the user to use regular D-SLR lenses. There are a several companies making DOF adapters for brand specific camcorders. The cheapest may be the Letus35 Mini which costs around $800.00 (US). There are other brands and other set-ups depending on your camera and your budget. The other alternative is the new D-SLR cameras that can record HD video as well as high resolution still images. Canon EOS Rebel T2i (1080 HD) and the Nikon D5000 (720p HD) are a couple of the less expensive ones. By being able to change the lenses allows you to control DOF.

What lens should I get for my Canon Rebel T3i?

Sebastian

So pretty soon I'll be getting a brand new Canon Rebel T3i because I'm an aspiring filmmaker. That being said, I want to be able to achieve shallow depth of field and great focal length in order to get the best low light performance possible. I'm also on a budget and Google isn't really working for me.
What lens or lenses should I get to begin with in order to achieve really good low light performance and really good bokeh? Or what lenses do you guys know that are great for DSLR filmmaking? Please share your opinions, thoughts, and experiences with lenses you guys have used, and personal recommendations would be the best.
Thanks!

Answer
Hmmm, not sure you should be buying a DSLR if you are just going to use it for video. Seems like overkill to me. These cameras are designed for still photography first and foremost. Video is a recent addition to their repertoire.

If you want nice depth of field effects with a DSLR you need a lens with a wide minimum aperture, Wide angle lenses aren't going to give you as much background blurring as more telephoto lenses.
Understanding depth of field http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm - Wider apertures also help in low light conditions. Generally the wider the minimum aperture the more expensive the lens. A good wide angle to telephoto zoom with a wide minimum aperture is going to cost you way more than a semi-pro video camera.

Get a semi-pro video camera instead. It'll be cheaper. Check this one: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/professional-camcorders/canon-legria-hf-g25-camcorder-high-definition-black/21007227-a.html - I'm not sugestin you get this particular camera, but it's an example of what's available to aspiring film makers.

I recorded some video on a Panasonic camcorder. However, iMovie does not seem to recognize the camera and won't let me import the clips. My friend has Windows Vista, and he can import them onto his computer. However, I want to edit them in iMovie. Is there a way to transfer the video clips from his computer to mine via the Internet, while still maintaining full quality?

Answer
iMovie will automatically detect when you have a FireWire camcorder connected. If you see the message No Camera Attached, make sure your camera is turned on and properly plugged in to your computer via a FireWire cable and that your camcorder is set to VCR, VTR, or Play mode.

Another way to import vids to iMovie is to convert the file to mp4 or mov format first. You can't read the vid even it's sent from your friend's PC. I use iskysoft video converter and the quality is state-of-the-art! http://www.iskysoft.com/video-converter-mac.html

Is there any way to transfer video from a samsung sc-d382 min dv camcorder to my iMac without using iMovie 09?

dcmediaman

I have a firewire 400 cable with a 400 to 800 adapter. My iMac is the 27in. version. I can record to iMovie 09 using the camcorder and firewire cable, but cannot send video from the camcorder to iMovie 09. Can I use a video coverter, Quicktime Pro, or other built-in app?

Answer
When you are moving DV-format video from the miniDV camcorder to the computer, the computer Imports - or Captures - the video. DV format video is compressed and the camcorder's processor does the decompression and the video is saved to the iMovie (MOV) file format.

You are correct, the miniDV tape based camcorder does not "send" the DV format video to the computer - the computer takes the video from the camcorder.

QuickTime Pro won't do what you want, either.

Final Cut (Express or Pro) will behave the same way iMovie does...

I am not aware of any application that will just stream the DV-format video data (no importing, no decompression) straight from the camcorder to the computer. This is not platform-spacific - the same is the case for Windows video editing for miniDV tape based camcorders, too. Importing is a real-time activity when working with miniDV tape.

The only way I know of to do what I *think* you need in order to do what you want is to record the DV format video straight to a specialized external hard drive - Focus Enhancements makes the FireStore series. This way, the DV forrmat video data is written directly to the FireStore drive when you connect the camcorder to the FireStore with a firewire cable. When video aquisition is complete, power everything down, connect the FireStore external drive to the iMac, power up, and work with the DV format files... Sony has a external video storage unit, too - but I don't know if it will work with your Samsung miniDV camcorder. These specialized external storage devices are not inexpensive...

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

Answer
try writing a letter to your local electronic stores for help. a nicely worded request with your goals to Best Buy might just get you started. they often have equipment that has been returned and can no longer be sold as new, or old models that need to make room for the latest. Your local newspaper may also be willing to help if you write a press release about your new club and your goals.

Is it possible for a camcorder to have 100x optical zoom? Would it be possible to use even with a tripod?

best camcorder new baby
on 10 Tips for Taking Portraits of Your Newborn Photography Families.com
best camcorder new baby image

Jake

My cousin has a camcorder with 70x optical zoom and it works fine.
I recently saw one that had 78x optical zoom, it was Panasonic.

Why do people say it wouldn't be possible to have 100x optical zoom?
78x optical zoom isn't that much less than 100x.

Answer
optical zoom over 20x is not very practical. megazoom is a result of using very tiny CCD imagers. for a 1/4 inch format CCD, the normal focal length is 4mm, 20x is 80mm which is 3 inches a rather reasonable size lens for a plam held camcorder. 100x would be 400mm or 15 inches, that is a lot of glass to hang in front of a 1 inch thick camera. then there is the problem of light gathering. for reasonable pictures in daylight, the lens needs a minimum iris opening of f4. the "f" factor is the ratio of focal length divided by lens diameter. so for 400mm to achieve f4 it would need to be 100mm diameter or 4 inches. But you might realize that the biggest problem is stability, to prevent blur, OIS is usable to 20x. That prevents blur but it does not control bounce or similar unintended movement, that is you will have sharp images of something that is bouncing. Here is where a tripod is needed. Television sports cameras use 40x to 50x lenses from Center field at baseball, or stadium top for football. But that camera is mounted on a $250,000 vibration supression mount, not a simple tripod. The megazoom may be something of value for still digital photos where the effective shutter speed can be increased to get a clear single frame. CCDs are getting down to 1/8th inch size with would reduce the example numbers in half. but then you have to cram the 12 elements used in a normal servo zoom (one that tracks focus) into minimum thickness of 2mm. that is why the flip cameras don't have optical zoom. and the funny thing is, all the sports people want to put "baby death" super fisheye lenses on their cameras, just the opposite of megazoom.

Should I get a camcorder to video tape my baby's life from the start?

Q. I am 4 months pregnant. I want to know if it is a good idea to video tape my baby's life from the very beginning.

Answer
Yes, most definately. And if you can, tape the birth. I didn't with my daughter, now they don't allow video in the room and i wish i would've taped it. You don't have to watch it right away but tape it and put it away because years later you will want to see it.

1080p sport video camera image

Elan

I'd like to record from multiple 1080p cameras at the same time without having to sync multiple tracks from different devices.

Does anybody know if a multi-channel 1080p DVR exits or any PC hardware/software combination that would allow me to capture 30fps (or better) at 1080p simultaneously from multiple sources?

Thanks!

Answer
A multi-channel digital video recorder ("DVR") records digital video to separate, discrete, files. Each video input source will have its own file. If you want to use camera A as the "master shot", then cut in camera b, camera c, etc on top of that, you will still need to sync the separate, discrete, video source files when you edit. So basically, I don't understand your question.

If you put a video switcher between the cameras and the recording media, then the input will be sync'd and the output will be recorded with all the live switching (like a live broadcast). With a concert or sports broadcast, in addition to the live switching, there are MANY DVRs recording all the video - that's how the music video gets made later - or the highlight videos...

Sony's SONAPS production system could get you there...
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-datastorage/cat-sonaps/
Plan on a couple of days training. The size of the system drives the $. I *think* the entry point is around $100,000.

What is a good video camera to make videos under $260?

Linda

I want a camera that is 1080p. It would be used for making youtube videos. I would like to know if you guys know any. Thanks for reading/answering.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

There is no app available that can be downloaded and change the hardware in your phone, because that is what it has to do to improve either the video or audio qualities of your phone. If you want better video quality, use a camcorder, not a damn phone to shoot videos.

I am looking for a camcorder that shoots in HD, has a Manual Focus, White Balance, all that jazz. Does anyone know which camera is the best bang for your buck? I have been looking at the different Canon Vixias, but I would another persons opinion on this one.

Answer
The Canon Vixia, Sony Handycam, Panasonic (they don't have a brandname) and other consumer camcorders bury manual controls in a menu. While the Vixias and Handycams at the higher end (in the $800+ range) have a thumbwheel that can be assigned manual focus capability, none in this class have a focus ring. The least expensive camcorder that captures high definition video and has a real focus ring is the Sony HVR-HD1000 shoulder mount - or the Sony prosumer HDR-FX7 for a smaller footprint. If size is an issue, the Sony HVR-A1 (with the XLR adater removed) has a lens-barrel ring that can be either manual focus or manual zoom but it is pretty pricy.

ALL camcorders have a white balance control in their menu system.

What are good, moderately priced semi-professional camcorder?

Chris

I'm a Journalism major and I'm currently in production of a documentary about religion practiced in my hometown for my school.

As I'm currently in college, I have very little money to spend. One pf my goals is to be an indie film/documentary director. As such, I would love to purchase a good camcorder.

What is a good camcorder of semi-professional/professional quality that I can purchase for a moderate price (at least as moderate as a camera will allow).

P.S., as a little side question, would kick-starter be a good way to raise money? For the project as well as the equipment?

Answer
My definition of a "professional camcorder":

Lens filter diameter = 70mm or larger
Imaging chip is 3CCD (3CMOS is acceptable but not preferred) that is 1/3" or larger.
Audio inputs are XLR connectors. If the camcorder has a single 1/8" (3.5mm) sretro audio input, then it drops to "prosumer".

The Canon XHA1 meets all these requirements of "pro grade". The Sony HDR-FX1000 meets all the requirements for "prosumer" and an XLR (juicedLink or BeachTek) adapter can be used for XLR mics. The Sony HVR-Z5 and Panasonic AG-HVX200 round out the list of entry-level pro-grade cams that meet or exceed the stated requirements. I think the Panny is the only one that comes with a shotgun mic for camera mounting but all the others can mount a shotgun mic. Since I prefer Sennheiser or Audio Technica shotgun mics, it does not really matter.

The next step up has the Canon XF and XLH lines; Sony HVR-Z7, HDCAM/XDCAM lines and the JVC GY-HM series.

All are "digital" including those using miniDV tape. Remember, the "DV" in miniDV = digital video.

If your definition of "semi-professional/professional camcorder" is different, please let us know what that is so appropriate suggestions can be provided to you.

When you research these, you will find pricing from around $3,000 up to $60,000. "Moderate price" is relative. Remember that the camcorder is a small piece of a larger system. You will also need a good, sturdy tripod and other steadying devices, video lights, optional batteries from the manufacturer, cables, cases, mics (there is no single "best" mic), video editing application, possible computer upgrades to be able to edit the video you capture...

Kick starter? We don't know where you are. Perhaps there are small businesses in your area willing to pay few $ for video production for posting to the web or there is a local wedding/event videographer willing to take you on as an intern or parents willing to pay for video capture of their children's sports activities or stage performances. With little/no experience with video capture, selling video services, editing and delivering a final product to your customer, this could be an interesting learning experience for you.

I've been looking for a camcorder with good image quality. There's a liquidation sale in my area, and a lot of the camcorders and car stereos are this brand. I've never heard of it, and Consumer Reports website doesn't have anything to say about it. Has anybody tried one of their products, and would you recommend it? Or was it a piece of s***?

Answer
I've never heard of that brand either. I wouldn't waste my money on a product that isn't well known. I've had two Sony camcorders and they both took excellent videos. I would not buy that Mitsuba. Save your money and get a better one.

What's the cheapest decent camcorder that records 1280x720, and has good image stabilization?

Jacob J

I was looking at those little pocket camcorders but I think I'd prefer optical zoom, and image stabilization features, as well as HD quality. What are some good options in the lower price range? Less than 400 possibly?

Answer
Kodak easyshare M1033 is pretty good is is the best rated on consumer reports for camera . Although it's zoom is nothing too great it makes it up with outstanding 10 mega pixel pictures and HD video. I got mine for $130.

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

why are my iMovie film clips out of sequence?

Matt

when I import video from my sony handycam digital disk camcorder into imovie, the film clips are always out of sequence. for example, when recording a basketball game, I get the clips showing up in imovie out of sequence from the actual game. is there something I can do to correct that?

Answer
Maybe you don't have the right codecs installed.

What is the best video camera for a college student studying Film & Video?

I know nothing about video cameras, but my boyfriend has an ancient Sony Handycam, and I want to get him something more modern and more appropriate for a Film & Video Student. I am also a student so price is somewhat of an issue.

Answer
We have had many students asking the same question over the months, Its very hard to say get this type/model of camera, Probably the best idea is to contact the college and talk to the media teacher, he/she will be able to give you an idea what would be the best type, and best for compatibility with their equipment. Ease of getting the video from the camera to the computer to edit it, or just view it. so a comera that the video needs to be converted may not be a good idea.

A budget would have been nice, maybe consider second hand, there are a number of companies that offer reconditioned semi professional camcorders, (that would give him a good start) Maybe something like a Canon XL1s (not the newest kid on the block) but will still give most hard drive and media card camcorders a good run, not only for the quality of the images but the features of the camera,
Because its a mini-dv (tape) then there is almost zero problems with connecting it to any college media computer.

Agian first port of call is the college and talk to them.

Good luck

what are the best hd video cameras under $300 that record sports well in low light conditions?

jdl12321

i know that the $300 is not a lot for an hd video camera and that it won't be the greatest video quality ever, but i'm just a college kid so my funds are limited to say the least. i record tennis matches with my brother, and we usually play at night, as well as basketball games (during the day). any thoughts?

Answer
no consumer HD camera can record sports action except as a blur. that is because of the super high compression. MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.

the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

This summer I am going to a ranch to ride and visit friends. I plan on filming a lot when I am there, I need a camera that can film a long time without taking too much memory, that can go a long time without dieing, and please if it can, a recharge able battery. The arena I will ride in is dark and the horses kick up some dust too. If it can under 200 dollars I would appreciate it, but it can be to 300 dollars. Thank you.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video
