is the continuous drive of a dslr faster than a point and shoot?

sport video camera comparison

sport video camera comparison image

ilovepurpl

for example the one of the slr is 3 or 3.5fps. and the point and shoot has a higher one. which would be faster?

can 3 to 3.5fps be fast enough to capture sports games in slr's?

Answer
It will depend upon the cameras and specifications. FPS stands for frames per second, so the specifications should be comparable...unless you're talking video vs. still frames.

Many point and shoots will shoot low-resolution (tiny image) video at 30 fps, but people think that specification could be compared with the still frame rate of an SLR. It's not comparable, because an SLR has a much bigger photo. You need to compare the still frame fps rate and then you'll be able to make a correct comparison.

Casio does make a camera with a 60 fps rate for still frames.

In any case, 3 to 3.5 fps is fast enough to capture sports in most situations, but full-time professionals use SLRs that shoot at 8 to 11 frames per second. For general purpose use though, 3 fps is sufficient, 5 fps is great, and anything above that is fantastic.

If you time your shot right, you only need 1 frame though---so timing your shot is the most important thing you can do. Then worry about the fps rate. But to answer your two questions directly: yes 3 fps can be fast enough and as long as you compare the *still* frame rates, you can pick the camera with the higher fps rate.

Answer
Nikon has really found the perfect camera for beginner's and advanced shooter's alike, and it's call the D90. I am not a beginner, but let me tell you if I was, this is the camera to get. It has a lot of buttons but that is no problem, if you don't know what something is in the menu's just hit the question mark button and a descriptive explanation lights up the D90's beautiful improved high res screen. The screen is why I bought the D90 instead of the D40 or D60, it lets me eyeball my exposure accuratley that way I can make the necessary adjustments to my EX comp, WB, and ISO. This camera is often compared to the D300, I can tell you this, if you are thinking of buying one or the other, there are only 3 differences between these 2 camera's. 1. If you are a casual shooter who does not need 1/8000 shutter speed then get the D90 with its 1/4000 SS, this is more than adequate for most sports and action shooting. The D300 excels when it comes to faster moving objects, like racecars. 2. The D300 has 51 Autofocus points while the D90 has 11. You will only need the extra AF points if you are doing really high speed Action, although the AF on the D300 is really sweet, it has lighting speed AF, but like most things in life, people will pay for this feature and never use it, thats where you will save you hard earned cash buying the D90. 3. SIZE, the D90 is a lot smaller and weighs less, due to the fact that the D300 has and Aluminum frame, and better weather sealing, I will say that the D90 is no slouch in the construction department though it feels very well built. So if you are really pondering which one to get, I say for most purposes the D90 is a year newer, has video, the same picture quality and low light capability (except for the AF of the D300, which focuses a bit faster in lowlight) You can save 500 bucks, and get better Lenses, I shoot Nikons pro glass with my D90 and love it, I have the 70-200 VR 2.8, and the 24-70 2.8 and let me tell you there is no comparison. Those lenses are tack sharp with this camera. Or if you cannot afford those lenses, then get the D90 body and the 16-85 VR Nikon lens, you won't be disappointed.

You could consider a flash memory camcorder like Flip Mino. It can store about 60 minutes of video and using it is very simple. It also has software that lets you upload to YouTube easily.

What is the best camcorder to buy to make youtube videos?

Q. I want to record 1080p high definition youtube videos, but every camcorder i find that looks good has horrible reviews and its driving me crazy. I just need a high definition camera thats good for making youtube videos.

Answer
If your just starting out, I would recommend something like a flip camera, you should practice with a cheaper camera before you move onto 1080p (Video Cameras like that's prices usually start around 300 dollars) Then again having said that, here are some links to some nice, affordable, 1080p Cameras

I want to record and review electronic equipment, so I am looking for a video camera that would be good for that type of thing, but I couldn't think what to search for. Any ideas? Probably something with a stand so I could use it hands free. Thanks

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer.

any help?

Answer
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.

Can you shoot regular videos with the GoPro?

Joshua Kei

I dont want to make a video of extreme sports i just want to make some HD videos. and not mount it on anything.

Answer
Yes. The camera won't magically refuse to work because it isn't mounted to a surfboard about to be used on a 50 foot wave... Press record and it will record.

Then do that. Iwas at a wedding a few weeks ago and one of the guests was using a GoPro to capture some of it. The hired video person had WAY better video gear, but I'm sure the GoPro got some decent stuff, too - the wedding was outdoors, during the day in bright sunlight so no low light issues... And I am pretty sure the audio the GoPro got was poor...

Answer
Hello
Im basically in the same boat as you. I also need a camera for the same budget and to do and make Youtube videos.
Ive been looking in to the Toshiba Camileo X200 (its a camcorder)
It takes 1080p video Not sure how good the pictures are tho.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LS0ADS/ref=asc_df_B005LS0ADS2107808?smid=A26Y6LUPZAD1V3&tag=dealtmp761578-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395129&creativeASIN=B005LS0ADS

Also the FujiFilm Finepix S4500 (bridge camera)
Which takes 720p video but much better pictures than the Camileo. It also has a 30x zoom.

http://www.dpreview.com/products/fujifilm/compacts/fujifilm_s4500

I would suggest looking at those cameras, but don't take my word for them because I have never used them my self but reviews are pretty good on them. I would also (If possible) buy some light equipment! Trust me it will really make the video or pictures look much more Professional with a well lit room than it being dark and poorly lit area.

P.S I hate Jim the Dbag up their! He answers everything like people have a endless budget to spend. >: [

Re-edit: Also might want to look for the Finepix SL300. Its a few Better features than the S4500

What is the best stabilizer for my 5d mark ii?

Nick

Ive been doing some automotive photography for around 2 years now and ive been wanting to start shooting some video. Im aware i need a good stabilizer to do this, when i go to car meets i always see people with crane jibs, sliders, steadicams and glidecams. Basically what i want to know since i dont have any experince with any of these, which would be the best for everything? I see people carrying around a crane and a slider sometimes, and i dont want two pieces of equipment. I just want one thatll do everything i need. I basically want sometime that i can just whip out and use when im at car events, but also want something that can cleanly tackle an individual shoot as well. I feel like a glide cam or steadicam would be the best but if anyone has any experience with them and think a crane would be better, let me know. Thanks guy!

Answer
There is no single "best" stabilizer. Just like there is no single "best" mic or lights or camera or camcorder or car... The vest systems (SteadyCam, GlideCam, VariZoom, etc.) appear to be the most versatile - though will not get as high as a crane can. Varizoom has an available optional extension arm for low shots, but nothing with height like a crane.

Everyone will have their opinion about which us "best" (usually depends on which they bought).

If you go with a vest system, read/watch/follow the included instructions. And you may need to learn how to walk.

I'm 16 and I need a digital camera, I don't think I want to spend more than $300. I like the touch screen ones but I want a good quality camera as well. I was thinking a 12 mega pixel. Any recommendations?

Answer
First of all, the number of mega pixels is the LAST thing you should be concerned about. If you are looking for cameras in this price range you are most likely going to be getting an advanced point and shoot (P&S) type camera and these models usually use relatively small image sensors. That means that, to get a high MP count they have to use smaller pixels which causes the maker to make compromises in other image qualities. See this link if you want more information ~

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

The main advantage of high MP counts is they allow you to make larger prints from you photos. Generally 4x6 inch is the standard photo size, so unless you are planning to make many prints of photos larger than standard page size (8.5 x 11 inches) you don't need more than 6-10 MP. Also, remember that the higher the MP count the smaller the number of pictures you can store on a memory card.

What you really need to do is ask yourself "What will I use the camera for?"

- If you want to have something that is easy to carry around look at compact models.
- If you want to be able to take pictures at events and parties you probably want one with good flash and/or high ISO capabilities (where lower MP are usually better). And face or smile detection might be important!
- If you want to do videos you want one with good sound recording capability. Again lower MP often means you can shoot longer clips before you have to stop.
- If you do a lot of sports or vigorous outdoor activities you might look at rugged waterproof models.

Consider these factors and then determine which ones are most important to you then find models that have as many of the features you want and are in your price range.

Good brands to look for with P&S models are, in alphabetical order -

Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony

I have been impressed with models from Sony, Canon and Olympus.

Here is a link to a comparison chart for a range of models (note there are multiple pages) they do not provide a way to eliminate models by $$$ so look at the price first and you can remove cameras that exceed your price range.

Get the Kodak PlaySport Zx3, it's a Consumer Reports recommended choice. Good quality pic and easy on the checking account.

The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.

Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.

What kind of camera is best for horse-y footage and pictures?

The camera I have now is and old Kodak and it doesn't take very good pictures or videos. Inside the barn isn't terribly dark, but it's not super bright and my camera makes everything look really dark anyway. If you zoom in while taking a video, it speeds up that part of the footage. What's a reasonably priced video camera[that also takes pictures? (:] that is good for what I need it for?
Thanks!

Answer
any of the canon rebels are good. more importantly it is the lens that creates the photo.
i would check into a lens with zoom and image stabilization.
i paid $150 for a 700 to 300 ml, 3.4 speed lens.
the slower the lens the crappier the phot and the less light it can use. 2.6 is great for racing shots, 3.4 is good for dressage and show jumping and anything slower then that is 4.8 is about as slow a lens as you will want. shoot with it on the sports setting to keep it simple.
check ebay and craigslist for deals.

How do 3D glasses work, will they work from a recorded video on a camcorder?

the94351

So, i downloaded a movie that was recorded on a camera and its a 3D movie. I have 3D glasses, but would they still work with a recorded copy of the movie?

Answer
In order to see things in 3D each eye must see a slightly different picture. This is done in the real world by your eyes being spaced apart so each eye has its own slightly different view. The brain then puts the two pictures together to form one 3D image that has depth to it

3D film viewed without glasses is a very strange sight and may appear to be out of focus, fuzzy or out of register. The same scene is projected simultaneously from two different angles in two different colors, red and cyan (or blue or green). Here's where those cool glasses come in -- the colored filters separate the two different images so each image only enters one eye. Your brain puts the two pictures back together and now you're dodging a flying meteor!

So im sure it will....... because it will still hvae the colors on the screen im sure., and the glasses separate them.

What kind of video camera should I buy to shoot a sporting event?

Larry

I may be hired to work as a freelance videographer for high school sporting events. The company wants me to use my own equipment to shoot the games, which I am in the process of getting. They recommend I have an HD Prosumer camera. I've done some research, and I saw the Canon VIXIA HF G10 was pretty good and not overly priced. Does anyone have any recommendations about what other types of video cameras I can buy or give any more input about this camera I've look into? Also, is it best to get a camera that has the viewfinder on the side of the camera or on top of it?

Answer
For sports/fast action, generally something that does not do high compression AVCHD. Like a Sony HDR-FX7. Of course, this assumes your computer has a firewire port. If it does not and you are not willing to add one, then the Canon HF G series is decent.

You will also want a tripod (it can double as a monopod is you only extend one leg). You really should not capture video handheld. And your computer may need upgrading (CPU, RAM, fast external hard drive, video editor) to deal with the AVCHD compressed video.

If you are capturing on a bright sunny day, the LCD panel can be difficult to see - so the eyepiece viewfinder is much more useful.

An optional high capacity battery from the camcorder manufacturer is a good idea.

A shoulder-mount rig may be helpful, too.

If someone runs into you and breaks the camera, who pays to fix it?

Good luck.

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

videography job, how to get the dslr videos to the customer?

Katie

got my first gig tomorrow, i know im going to be getting rude comments, so just keep them to yourself

im just wondering how will i get the clips to him, hes wanting me to film there football practices then just give him the raw footage, but HOW

wont he need the canon program.?
i tried just importing it to movie maker, but it lost quality and looked horrible

HELP

Answer
It depends on the agreement.

I've signed up for gigs where at the end of the gig I hand the digital tape or memory cards to the person paying me in exchange for payment.

I've also had jobs where I take the video home and copy the raw video to optical disc or external hard drive - then meet the person and (with a laptop) show them samples of what they are getting on the optical discs or external hard drive. Who supplies what and what the payment is should be defined *before* the gig.

Canon dSLRs record to MOV file format video files that are easy to transcode into high quality converted, decompressed, files - no, the "Canon program" is not necessary. Actually, things work better without it when the right software and computer hardware is used.

And this is not being rude - but a few tips:

When your dSLR overheats after about 20 minutes of constant video capture (it is in the manual), cool-down will take a while. Be sure you shoot short sequences with time between sequences to try and keep the dSLR internals cool enough to keep working.

The "d" in dSLR" = digital. There is no film involved. No chemicals, no sending out for processing, not negatives. In this case, you are capturing digital video.

MovieMaker is not designed to handle MOV files. I am surprised you got any image let alone poor quality.

Capture at highest quality. This means low compression. Hopefully you have enough memory cards.

Use a steadying device. Monopod, tripod, vest systems with counterbalanced articulated arm, shoulder-mount rig - anything, but not handheld. You are capturing video - not still images. Humans were not designed to be steady.

Be sure your dSLR's battery is fully charged.

Hope audio is not important - we don't know which dSLR you are using, but since video (includes audio) is a secondary "convenience feature", the built-in mic (usually mono, not stereo) is not so good and in a place where your finger can easily cover it. Also, most do not have manual audio gain control, so really loud audio and really low audio may record poorly. When audio is low, if auto focus or motorized zoom is used, the internal mic can record the motor noise. External mics are recommended. This is in the manual of pretty much all dSLRs for pretty much all manufacturers.

There's lots more, but this is a start.

Good luck. I wish someone had shared half this information with me my first time out...

PS, If video is your primary goal, I hate to break it to you, but you got the wrong tool for the job. dSLRs are designed for capturing still images. As previously stated, video is a convenience feature". If video is the primary goal - especially long sequences (longer than about 20 minutes), then use of a camcorder is strongly suggested. Camcorders are designed to capture video and don't usually have the overheating, file segmentation/file size limitation (not previously mentioned, but in the dSLR manual) or audio issues documented in the dSLR's manual. If video is required from a dSLR-like video capture device (similar footprint), then the Canon EOS Cinema Cam and Black Magic Designs Cinema Cam should be investigated.

Since I am back, I'll also suggest that you read through the dSLR's portion of the manual that discusses video/movie capture. Fast action sports can be tricky - and your "boss" may want to use the video to get still image frame grabs. If the camera's shutter is set to about 1/200 second or slower, there will be blur during fast action sequences. And if the shutter is faster, the possibility that the video on playback will look "stroby" is very high.

Looking for HD camcorder...?

Will

i'm looking for a new HD camcorder to replace my flip video Mino HD 4GB. i love the flip i would just like to upgrade for my videography. i need more space and battery life on it than 2 hours. 4 hours would be good. and i would also like to have full HD 1080 because the flip only has 720. and i would like it to be under $200 because i am planing on getting 2.

Im looking for something that will attach to a Tippmann X-7 or Invert Avatar Mask so I can video game play. Could I get advice on what gear to buy?

Answer
I'd recommend one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Super-Action-Sports-Helmet-Camera-30FPS-/180549502598?pt=Camcorders_Professional_Video_Cameras

It's massively adjustable so it can fit the helmet no problem, or you can tape it to the gun. I use it for airsoft and it's great.

One word of warning would be that if you want to mount it on helmet, you need to mount it on your left hand side (so it'll be upside down) if you want to get the gun barrel in the picture, so you'll need software to flip it.

Hope this helps

How do you setup a Drift or GoPro camera to record aviation communications?

Craig Blum

Is there a cord that can go into either camera to patch into my headset? What is your aviation camera setup? If you can be specific and give company names or websites to products.

Answer
It depends on your requirements and what radio you are using.

The Drift and GoPro have no audio-input jack. If you place them close enough to a speaker so they can record the audio, it is likely they will not capture the video you want.

I like the FlightCam 360 for video (I know - not HD, but if you go with a GoPro or Drift, you can do the following, too)... Capture your audio with an audio recorder (Zoom H2) connected to the auxiliary audio output of the radio (hope is has one). When you edit, merge and synch the video and audio. This way, the video and audio capture devices do not need to be in the same place. It takes an extra synch step later, but the quality of the audio and video will be lots better and provides more flexibility.

I think the GoPro sticks out too much. For a single stand-alone extreme sport cam I like the Contour HD helmet cams better for low-profile.

I just bought this camera to replace my old Hitachi camcorder and this camera is awesome. The video quality is great the sound is excellent and it is Mac compatible for those who may be wondering it will work on imovie. But this camera is lightweight and the discs do not need to be finalized before you put them in a dvd player or import them to a computer, you just hook up the usb cord and import the video quick and easy. It does come with it's own software that is only compatible with windows which I dont have so I dont know if its any good.
But so far I am very pleased with this camera perfect for anyone who loves to film themselves and edit the footage. Really good buy for a great price.

First of all i want to say how awesome and quick Amazon Warehouse deals sent this little camcorder to me.

Now onto the camcorder itself. This little thing is great. It did not go below the expectations i had for it. People should know this is not a high end camcorder it is simply something for a teenager or someone just getting started with recording videos. The camcorder shoots in 640x480(VGA) 1280x720(720p) and 1440x1080(anamorphic 1080p). It shoots these formats in low bitrate H.264 video and stereo(?) AAC audio. I leave a question mark next to stereo because after reading the sony site it claims the microphone is mono but when i play back the video in a media player it shows up as stereo. Anywho the video formats are all low bitrate formats like i said above and by that i mean 720p video is only 4-5mbit and the 1080p video is about 6mbit but in sports mode i think its is able to achieve 8mbit so dont go expecting your videos to be awesome High bitrate HD video this is just economy. As for the aac audio it is only about 128kbps. The zoom is fairly good for an economy cam the focus is a bit slow though but macro mode helps somewhat and you can hear it a bit on the sound and also i recommend getting a cheap tripod if you want your videos to come out less shaky cause this camcorder does not have that ability.

Overall i love this little camcorder for its price mostly i find everything on it decent enough for what i use it for. But if you are looking for a High end camcorder this is not for you. Expect to pay about 300 or more for a good camcorder and look into AVCHD stay away from MPEG-2 camcorders.

Oh and by the way the programs for this camcorder stink what i do to extract the videos is plug the camera into the usb port and press the menu button on the camera to put it into mass storage mode and that lets the camera act like a hard drive so i can grab the pictures and movies off there.

What are good lens i could get for my Canon HF M30?

im really new with lenses and stuff so i was wondering if theses lenses were capable of being used for video and photographs rather then just being for photographs.

If this isnt a good deal, could someone tell me what i should get? I plan on doing all sorts of videos so i want a good variety of lenses. thanks!

Answer
You can attach add on lenses that have a 37mm thread to the front of that camera. However, the built in lens already covers wide angle to telephoto (39.5 - 592.5 mm ), so those two are unnecessary. In addition, these screw on lenses that you are thinking about are garbage. Screw on lenses are low quality and will generally distort your images a great deal.

Wait until you have used your camera for some time before you try to decide on any extras. Trying to purchase extras beforehand is a sure way to waste a bunch of money on stuff you do not need.

What is the best semi profesional video camera?

sport video camera hd
on Spy Sport Action kamera med hj effektiv IR LED - Olsens IT ApS
sport video camera hd image

Caleb

I am looking for a semi professional video camera that shoots 1080p HD. The two things it needs to have a mic input and either a built in memory or a SD card slot (preferably a SD card slot but not necessary). I would like it to be able to take both 30 fps and 60 (it would be nice but not necessary). I don't have a opinion as to what brand but it needs to be around the $1000 or less range.

Answer
semi professional, its a lot of perception, like is the glass half full or half empty. if a camera is not professional, then it is consumer grade, period. If you want to think that a consumer camera is "just like" a pro camera but costs less then that is your perception. but for a reality check, remember that's not true.

the first point is no professional camcorder uses SD cards for media. Those are ok for still shots, but they require super compression of video by a codec that does not hold up to professional use. And professional videographers shoot for the purpose of making money, not "prestige". They need to usually provide a client with a DVD of the finished work. The only consumer HD format that can make decent DVDs is the miniDV based HDV type which is not SD card or under $1000. When Sony invented AVCHD, it was never intended for pro use, but for people to show off home movies directly from the camera without editing. Same can be said for H.264 which is a public variant of Sony proprietary AVCHD. Having a mic input does not magically result in HiFi sound if the memory card based camcorder compresses the bejeebers out of the audio, and all do. Speaking of editing, AVCHD and H.264 have no support for timecode.

for the purpose of making DVDs, whether wedding/event, music video or action sport genres, the weapon of choice is miniDV. You can still get a consumer miniDV camera, the Canon ZR960 has a retail price way under $1000. It shoots in 16:9 so once it is on DVD, it will look better than any consumer SD card based HD camera.

Good luck.

What is a good camcorder to be filming short action films with?

Leda

I'm starting to love to make short action films, but the camera right now I have has very bad quality and it's just... not good for any kind of short films at all. Please recommend a good quality HD camera for me? I can only go into the budget of up to 500-600 dollars.
Also in my short films I tend to not use a tripod in shots for more dramatic shaky effect and the camera I have right now freaks out a little bit too much without a tripod.
