Johnny

I'm looking to invest in a good camera for independent filmmaking. My budget is around $5,000, but it needs to be able to capture the fast pace of scenes involving a car chase and fight scenes. Any advice from some professionals out there working in the industry would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
For $5,000 you can rent a good 3-CCD video camera for a few days

As you can see, you will have to tighten up your shooting script to get the whole thing in the can before your rental time is up,.

Buying such a camera will cost far more than $5,000

Can someone help me with information on prosumer camcorders?

Jackie

I'm looking for a good quality HD camcorder to use in independent feature-length filmmaking. Several action shots/scenes appear in my screenplay so I need a camcorder that will capture the fast pace of the movie. Would like some advice from people who are in the business and have professional experience with cinema-like production quality cameras.

Answer
To begin with, a prosumer camcorder will not be a "cinema-like production quality camera".

A "cinema-like production quality camera" would be in the Panavision, CineAlta or Arriflex environment or maybe drop to a Red One or Silicon Imaging camera...

For action shots in the prosumer environment stick with least compression. Most likely HDV, but better with XDCAM, HDCAM or DVCPRO HD formats.

So... prosumer HDV points you to the Sony HDR-FX1000. Above this gets you to pro, below this is consumer.

How do 3D glasses work, will they work from a recorded video on a camcorder?

So, i downloaded a movie that was recorded on a camera and its a 3D movie. I have 3D glasses, but would they still work with a recorded copy of the movie?

Answer
In order to see things in 3D each eye must see a slightly different picture. This is done in the real world by your eyes being spaced apart so each eye has its own slightly different view. The brain then puts the two pictures together to form one 3D image that has depth to it

3D film viewed without glasses is a very strange sight and may appear to be out of focus, fuzzy or out of register. The same scene is projected simultaneously from two different angles in two different colors, red and cyan (or blue or green). Here's where those cool glasses come in -- the colored filters separate the two different images so each image only enters one eye. Your brain puts the two pictures back together and now you're dodging a flying meteor!

So im sure it will....... because it will still hvae the colors on the screen im sure., and the glasses separate them.

whats the best hand held camcorder for making a Indie film?

Ok so i am making a Movie. Well a Independent movie. I am on a low budget. So what is the best possible camcorder to use to shoot this movie. It has to be in HD. And im shooting kinda like a documentary but it is a horror movie and it is shot a lot in the dark. So what is the best for this. And what is the best speacial effects software. I am on a low budget though.

Answer
Hi Michael:

"Low budget" is a very relative term: Low-budget to Steven Spielberg is a couple million bucks; to me it's $100,000 or so. To you, probably a lot less!

Post an update edit using the "Additional Details" link, and give us some real-world dollar figures, please. You'll get a much better Answer from the good Contributors on here.

Low-light shooting is a good point you noted, and is an important detail. Your "pseudo-documentary" style horror film sounds a lot like the "Blair Witch Project" format, so that also gives us some insight as to what you want to shoot.

By "Special Effects" you need to be more specific, also. Do you mean "green screen" (ChromaKey) effects? Or do you want realistic 3D monsters popping out of people's bodies? (There you'd need something like Maya and a good artist/animator to pull that off.)

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

I own a Canon Powershot A570is camera and am unsure which movie mode fast frame rate to use. Help!?

I am going to attend an indoor sporting event and would like to use the movie mode to record some of it. My previous camera filmed movies at 320x240 resolution and the clips came out dark so I am trying to avoid that problem with this camera. There are two different movie resolution modes with this camera- 320x240 and 640 x 480 at 30 or 15 frames per second. I don't understand the difference between the two and the frames per second.

Answer
640x480 @ 30fps is the best quality/resolution available for recording movies. It's the camera's default setting and it's the one you should use. If you record at only 15fps, the video will be very choppy/jerky (and the 320x240 resolution will result in a smaller sized movie).

You should be using a high speed SD card for shooting movies, because movie recording is processor intensive. Something like Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III SD cards are excellent.

High quality movies (640x480 @ 30fps) eat up card space quickly (8 minutes per 1GB). This is because Canon does not overly compress their video, which means better looking movies.
Make sure you have the digital zoom turned Off...only use the optical zoom. You can't optically zoom during recording, only before you start recording.

Your camera is also capable of fast frame rate recording (320x240 @ 60fps). This would only be used for recording very fast moving subjects (movies are limited to 1 minute at a time).

good luck...

What are all the Xbox 360 exclusives? I know halo is one. Gears of war was one. Died after 3. Mass effect and saints row were originally exclusive to the 360 but that changed somehow. So now all Xbox has basically is halo and titanfall. Correct?

What are some absolute needs for this cruise?

island water sports camera
on BIG HEART PADDLE SEPTEMBER 24, 2011
island water sports camera image

Dallas

On April 10th I'm going on a 7 Day Western Caribbean cruise leaving from Galveston, TX and going to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; and Cozumel, Mexico.

What are some major needs for a cruise like this? I've never been on a cruise so this is just something new to me and I don't want to end up forgetting something I'll need.

Answer
I cruise 3 or 4 times a year and so here are some things I do to get ready:
1. Make sure that you have completed the required cruise pre-registration information so that you are not delayed when you get to the port. Plan to get to the port a minimum of 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time; that's pretty much a requirement so that the ship can send a complete passenger manifest to Homeland Security 60 minutes before departure. Boarding generally starts between 11:30 AM and noon.

2. Make sure that you have a passport or the documents required to cruise including your original or certified copy of your birth certificates and a photo ID.

3. Make sure that you have all of the cash you want to take (typically about $300 to 400 for a 7 day cruise) . You will not need an local currency anywhere in the Caribbean and Mexico.

4. Make sure that you have planned carefully your arrival day and time at the cruise departure port; i.e., plan to travel there a day early for both US and overseas cruises. You don't want to miss your cruise because of a flight delay or cancellation.

5. Pack for the various activities of the cruise including exercise wear, swim wear, formal wear, casual clothes for the daytime and sports/resort casual clothes for after 6:00 PM. After you pack look at what you have and try to eliminate as much as you can; think mix and match tops and bottoms and plan to wear each piece twice; or do laundry on ship (or use the laundry service); only a couple cruise lines have self service laundry but they will all do it for a fee.

6. Pack shoes for the various activities like beach shoes, sandals and/or flip flops, sneakers and good walking shoes, and shoes to wear sports casual and formal.

7. Make sure that you have any prescription medicines for the entire trip plus a week. Your cabin will have towels and soap provided, including pool and beach towels, and a hair dryer. It will also have a generic hair shampoo so you do not need to bring that unless you like a specific brand.

8. Pack clothes using those vacuum travel bags (cost about $20 for 3 at Target) so that I can get more in my bag and also so that if the airport security folks (TSA) opens my bag they can see stuff without rummaging through my things.

9. Prepare a carry-on bag: including some 16 oz bottles soft drinks and water (get this after finishing any air travel); MP3 player and its charger and headphones, camera and its charger or extra batteries, a couple books to read; a security pouch to hold my money and credit cards and passport and ID while traveling and/or off the ship; a large insulated cup with a seal able lid; and if flying a few snacks like nuts and crackers.

10. Plan carefully what you want to wear when you board the ship because the ship's photographer will take a boarding photo which you may want to purchase and you will be in those clothes all day and evening. Your luggage may not get to your cabin until about 5-6:00 PM

Other tips:

-Take a small carry-on bag for the last night of the cruise. On the last evening you will be required to put your luggage outside your cabin by about 2:00 AM so that they can start taking it down to the lower deck for offloading the next morning. So you will need a small bag for your toiletries and your clothes that you sleep in.

- If you are taking your cell phone, MP3 player or other item that needs to be plugged in take an extension cord as the plugs in the cabin are generally not in the best places and there are usually only one.

-If you plan to get into the pools or hot tub as soon as you get on ship (they will be open), bring those clothes in your carry on bag; you other luggage may not get to your cabin until much later in the afternoon.

-The cruise lines will offer a lot of interesting tours but they will be expensive. You DO NOT have to buy tours to get off the ship in port stops. You can go off on your own and many times in Caribbean and Bahamas ports you can find cheaper tours on the pier. Do a Google search of each port to see what activities are there that you may want to participate in. Then decide whether you want a ship's tour or to go on your own.

-Cruise lines will take lots of photos of you boarding the ship, getting off in ports, at dinner, on formal nights, around the ship and these are expensive. So take your camera with you all the time and ask others to take photos of you.

What are some things you should bring on your cruise?

LifeLoveLa

We are going on a Carnival cruise to the Caimen, Jamaican ,and other islands. Its my first time going on a cruise and I wanna know what to bring along!!!! Thanks in Advance! : )

Answer
Your cabin will have two beds which can be made into a queen, a bathroom with a shower stall, a closet and some drawer space, a TV and telephone, a safe for valuables, and a life jacket for each passenger. They will furnish fresh bath towels a couple times a day and also provide towels for the pool, and you can sign to have towels to take to the beach if you want. They will provide soap and shampoo and a hair dryer. Some ships have a small refrigerator/mini-bar that you have to pay for drinks from. But you can always call for free room service if you are hungry or thirsty.

Some people worry about getting sea sick, but the ships being used these days have automated stabilizers which minimize the rocking. The larger ships cut through the water so easy that you donât even feel like you are moving. When there is bad weather the cruise lines will steer around and away from it, sometimes changing the order of port stops. Also, the ships generally move overnight and dock in the mornings so you donât feel much movement. Consequently, your chances of getting sea sick are minimal. There is generally less motion than on an airplane. If you do get sick, all ships have a doctor and they will dispense sea sick medicines. If you are prone to motion sickness, just get pills or a patch from your own doctor before you go, or go to a boating store and get a sea sickness bracelet.

The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM. So take swim wear, shorts, sandals, beach shoes, your snorkel equipment if you have it, sun glasses and sun screen, lotions, a cap or big hat for the sun, a book if you are a reader, your music player, sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym, your camera, and other personal toiletries. After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc. Most 7-day cruises have two formal nights when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the shipâs Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. But most people do dress up in a tux for men and a long dress (any color) for women. Some men just wear a suit and tie and some women wear a nice dress but not a gown. You will not be denied access to the dining room or anything else if you choose not to dress up. (we usually take off the formal stuff after dinner and pictures anyway).

Its best to pack using soft-sided luggage because with space limited in your cabin it fits under the beds better if its not hard sided luggage. Take a small carry-on bag for the last night of the cruise. On the last evening you will be required to put your luggage outside your cabin by about 2:00 AM so that they can start taking it down to the lower deck for offloading the next morning. So you will need a small bag for your toiletries and and your clothes that you sleep in.

I need to know if a Hi 8 Tape can be played in a video 8 camcorder, I have access to a video 8 camcorder, and have been asked if I can help transfer Hi 8 tapes onto hard drive.
I have not got this the wrong way round, yes the Video 8 camcorder is older than the Hi 8 Tapes.

no, Hi8 tapes are recorded at a higher frequency so they look wierd when played back in a regular video8 camera.

Is there such a thing as a Sony Video 8 to vhs adapter?

rabbit3163

I have a Sony video 8 camcorder and am looking for an adapter to fit the tapes to VHS for conversion to digital...is there such a thing, and where can I get one?

Answer
No.

The only VHS tape adapter is for VHS-C (compact) to full sized VHS.

Your options are

1) find a Video8 camcorder with its AV cables and get an analog/digital converter (Pinnacle - Dazzle; Roxio, Hauppage, Canopus, among many others) and do the digitizing yourself...

or

2) contact a local video transfer business and have them do what you need...

I'm looking into buying a camcorder for all purposes but some of those purposes involve filming in the dark. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any good camcorders with night vision still being manufactured and I would like the model to also be fairly new (2010-2011). If you know of any an answer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
a check of amazon.com for "nightshot" turned up a number of new camcorders, mostly in the Sony DCR HCxx series. this is miniDV. Aiptek, a Chinese brand claims to have a similar feature but i wouldn't recommend their cameras. Sonystyle has no nightshot cameras listed as available.

Can anyone recommend an HD camcorder that is good in low light conditions?

Sally E

With my conventional (non high def), mini dv camcorder, night scenes (i.e in a street where the only light comes from street lamps) is fairly good but slightly fuzzy. Could a high def camcorder produce a better picture in theory, or would it simply be a higher resolution of fuzz?
I know it DEPENDS on 101 different factors but I only need some rough info.

I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

Answer
Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

What Panasonic hd camcorder should I buy?

Hello I am looking for a panasonic hd camcorder to buy as my previous camcorder somehow wont work anymore. I want it to be a Panasonic hd camcorder as I have heard that those are the best on the market today and for a very fair price.

I am willing to pay up to 500$ for this Panasonic hd camcorder.

So what Panasonic hd camcorder should I buy and why should I buy exactly the Panasonic hd camcorder that you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hello Maria, you should definately go for the Panasonic HDC-SD60K. This Panasonic hd camcorder is nothing but fantastic! It has so many great features and cool functions, basically everything you need in a camcorder and even more.

The battery last much longer than described and it takes amazing pictures. I cant remember the link, but search for the name and then you will find it.

I found the link, I guess I should have waited because it is actually half the price that I bought it from, which sucks for me, but I guess not for you :)

Should I use a warming filter for a more filmic look?

argh.pirat

I don't want people's skin to be red but I want it to look tan and the sky to look more blue and green leaves to stand out just like sunglasses I have but someone said to use a warming filter for film and to adjust white balance for video. I'm using the Canon XL2 how can I achieve this pleasant look?

Answer
Use a circular polarizer, that will give you bluer blues and greener greens as well as cut out unwanted surface glare from daytime shots in direct sunlight. You should NEVER use a warming filter with a digital camera or camcorder because it will throw off your white balance. A lot of your more traditional "effects" filters have virtually no use with modern digital cameras/camcorders as the effects can be either simulated within the camera or reproduced in a video editor like CS3 later. I don't do much digital video as I shoot stills from a DSLR, but if anything, digital is a whole other beast altogether in comparison to standard film of any kind.

Dont use any progs apart from explorer, open the drive and look for the videos, not sure what format they are going to be in (with out searching) maybe you are trying to use WMM or something that does not support the video format.

try the camera in another USB port you could even turn off your computer and restart it see if that helps/

Ezra K

I like making movies with my friends, but when I shoot with my miniDV camcorder the audio doesn't sound too great in post-production. I need to be able to record voices so that they sound better. I would buy a boom microphone or something, but my miniDV camcorder doesn't have an input slot for an external microphone. Is there any other way to record good quality audio without having a microphone attached to the camera I'm recording with (on a small budget)?

Answer
Your camera might be have a hot shoe accessory mount and you could add a microphone that way. If it doesn't then you will need to use an external audio recorder. You will need to then sync the audio with the video in post. The only problem with this is that they are somewhat expensive for good ones. Not sure about the quality but one like this http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-WS-300M-Digital-Recorder-Player/dp/B000BJ1UAE would probably be ok. Then you plug your mic into that. In order to sync the video you use a clap board. How you do this is you find the exact spot where the clap board first goes down in the video and then you will need to find the biggest spike in the audio and then you sync the to together. Hope this helps

Hey guys I was hoping to get some help with an audio issue.?

GuitarOrDi

I'm doing a school project where I have to do a 45 minute long video. I have a nice camcorder and everything but there's just one problem. The camera doesn't have an external microphone input. I know I can just use the internal mic but it's not the best quality. I was wondering if there's a way to get good solid sound quality without using an external microphone. Get back to me soon. Thanks!

Answer
you might not realize this, but all Hollywood movies are shot silent! the audio is recorded separate, sometimes even at a later time and mixed in. See if the school has a simple digital audio recording mic, that will work better than the camcorders mic because it can be placed strategically closer to the performers. import the audio file into the video editor.

Preferably under $500. It will be used for parkour videos, and most of the time it will be after sunset. It should be able to record very well in low light conditions, and should capture movement very well. Can anyone help me choose?

Answer
You need a modified sony digital8 camera with an infrared light source, The modified cameras are better than a normal camera, as they have no restriction on the opening of the lens aperture or infrared blocking device. In laymans terms it is a very strong night time video camera if used with an infrared light source.

What is a good camcorder for recording video and uploading it to the internet?

mike9626

I have a website that I'm creating, and I would like to put some videos on it 5-10 minutes long. What type of camcorder, or what are the specifications to look for in a camcorder, that will produce a med to high quality and clear video?

Answer
The real question is what type of activity are you filming. This should drive the decision of the camera. A camera which is great in full sunlight at the beach may not be as good for those pictures of the family around the dinner table at night. Most cameras will upload to the computer fairly easily through firewire [better] or USB2 [not as good]. You should also consider if you want an automatic everything kind of camera or one which allows you to manipulate the settings. If you are looking for an everything camera and you get one which requires you to adjust the settings -- you will hate the camera... also the opposite... if you want to adjust the settings and the camera wants to do it for you... just as bad.

Bottom line, is to determine the type of scene you are filming, determine the special features you desire and how you want the camera to handle them.

Strongly suggest you get one with firewire ports for computer transfer... you will thank me for this suggestion.

What camcorder to use on a low budget fetish porn?

p.dean76

I want to shoot some low budget fetish porn for clips4sale with my gf.
IS there any good HD camcorders in 300-500$ range that can be good to start off with until we get more money to buy a better one? Also if i get a full HD camcorder, am I able to change the setting to high quality or 780p so I can upload the video at a lower disk space usage if necessary?

Answer
The subject really does not matter.

This same recommendation goes for capturing decent video - whatever it is... Under good lighting conditions, any camcorder can capture decent video. In your price range, the Canon HF R entry level or the HF M mid-range consumer camcorders fit. Consider investing in a decent lighting kit.

Generally speaking, consumer grade camcorders will have a "video quality" setting. This will determine the amount of compression applied to the video when captured. The marketing term, "Full HD" generally refers to 1080p video. 99.999$ of humans can't tell the difference between 1080p, 1080i and 720p when the video is captured, edited and rendered properly.

780p is non-standard, so you probably won't find that setting anywhere. Some cameras allow that selection; many do not and instead always capture 1080i/p and let the user pick from "best quality (large file size, very clear on a large monitor, low compression) down to "Low Quality" (small file size, not so clear on a large monitor, high compression) and a few steps in between.

It is always recommended to capture at highest quality - you can always compress and reduce quality and file size... but once the data is compressed, you can't get back all that lost video data, so you can't upgrade back to high quality...

If you think you have decided on a camcorder, download and read the manual before you buy to be sure it has what you want - including the different file size/video quality settings.

Do you think that the Flip camcorder is better than the Sony Webbie HD?

Lina Q

I just bought a Sony Webbie HD, but now am second guessing myself and wondering if I should have went with the Flip. Which do you think is better and do you know of any of these types of mini camcorders that have a flashlight for recording in dark places?

Answer
The Flip UltraHD is better than the Webbie HD. I compared them at Best Buy before I bought the UltraHD.

You can attach flashlights to the UltraHD through the tripod mount.

I highly recommend reading this review which explains why the Flip is better, I agree with the author.

Is the Canon 7D good for indie film making?

Josh Bomga

I read multiple things about not using dslr cameras for film making, but then there was some people that said there's an exception for the Canon 7D. I want to go into film making, also do photography on the side. Since I only have a budget of a maximum of $1,200, I can't get a camcorder and a camera that would have high movie quality, so I thought to start with, maybe the 7D would be a good choice? I saw some sample videos with some different lenses and it has amazing video quality, plus features a mic input and other good features. What do you think? Thanks for your suggestions!

Answer
If you have a good script and know how to light your scene, sure you can make decent videos using a dSLR

Sample:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMbBKukJzBk

I hope you know that just buying a $1,200 camera will NOT give you what you need to shoot videos.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/camcorders/cam-cam.shtml

Plan on spending another $2,000 or more on the accessories necessary to use a dSLR as a proper video camera.

You did not mention if you already have a fluid head for your tripod, a super fast computer with a lot of RAM and a good video editing program.

Buying a $1,200 camera is only the tip of the iceberg.

Are there any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

Charlize

Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I've ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

Answer
All "real" camcorders have optical zoom and digital zoom.

It sounds like you are using a very low-end flip-like or toy camcorder or a camera that is primarily used for taking stills (and happens to have a "video" feature).

MiniDV tape based camcorders provide the best available video quality - but they use firewire (not USB) to transfer video to your computer. USB is only used for transferring stills from the camcorder's memory card or webstreaming (of the camcorder has either of these features). Adding a firewire port is typically not difficult - and it is pretty cheap.
Canon ZR800, ZR950, Sony DCR-HC52, HC62 and Panasonic PV-GS320 are good, entry-level, examples.

Hard drive and flash based camcorders compress their video a lot, but the quality isn't too bad... Video is transferred using USB. Sony DCR-SR45 and Canon FS10 are examples. They typically cost more than miniDV, but that does not mean the video quality is better - compression of the video information translates into lost data and can result in reduced video quality.

In any case, when you shop for a camcorder, do not use digital zoom as a feature comparison item - because when you bring the camcorder home, your first step is to turn digital zoom off. Use only Optical zoom.

Other things to look for in a good camcorder:
Mic-in jack (optional, but very useful)
Some sort of audio manual control (again, optional, but if you think you might be recording loud audio, like bands, this will be a requirement).

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. Their video is terrible - especially for editing or uploading to the web. The discs are a pain and can be unreliable (resulting in list video).

best handheld video camera for sports image

Alternativ

I really want to get into photography, and I finally convinced my parents to let me get a nice quality camera. Obviously it's not going to be THAT nice, since I'm a beginner and I don't want to break their bank account... So could anyone recommend a nice professional camera that's a bit on the cheaper side, and wouldn't be a pain to operate, having no experience? I plan to use the camera for portraits and some horror/macabre stuff. Thanks!

Answer
I would suggest the Canon PowerShot Digital Camera with HD Video Recording. I is a great camera for a beginner with a smaller learning curve.

Along the great quality of pictures the Canon PowerShot A4000IS takes it has other great features as well. It has a large 3 inch screen to really show off the pictures you took and to get the perfect picture every time.

The 8x Optical Zoom (35mm equivalent: 28-224mm) in PowerShot A4000 IS digital camera is the best in the A series from Canon. This gives you a larger opportunity to take pictures from one location. This is perfect for when you can not get too close to the action but still want to get the action in to your photos. Perfect for sports, crowded occasions, or anywhere that you can move into the action to capture your picture.

Two of the best features of the Canon is the Optical Image Stabilizer and the Auto Smart . On my old camera if I was not steady or if my image was not standing still my pictures would come out blurry all too often. Anybody with a small child can tell you that it is not easy to get them to stand or even sit still longer than 2.3 seconds. So the optical image stabilizer is awesome for me to capture him on the go.

Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer corrects the shakiness of your video from handheld camera movements using a lens stabilizer. What this means to you is that you will have great videos without a tripod.

For photos it reduces camera shake and vibration you maintain a sharper, steadier image.

Smart AUTO is an awesome sophisticated Canon technology that makes getting that great shot as simple as pressing the shutter button. Smart AUTO automatically detects certain factors and then adjusts automatically so that you get the best possible image when you are taking pictures. It will also detect and track non human movements such as vehicles and automatically take them out of your picture.

Once you are more experienced then I would move up into a dslr or something similar.

I have about 700 dollars to spend on a camera, but i really dont know what to get. I need something thats easy to use since I am fairly new to filming and editing. It also needs to have a handle to film lines, and a mic would be useful. I would also like to know what would be a good, cheap fisheye to get. Any help is greatly appreciated

Answer
If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing skateboarding, action sports; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

Is The "Flip" Slide HD Video Camera Great Or Does It Suck?

CHIEFS 4 L

I am getting the flip slide video camera for my brother and i was wondering is it better than the other flip cameras. is the slide one the best, and how does it preform.

Answer
Depends on what you are using it for...

If you are using it for any kind of action sports then... ITS SUCKS
If you need to capture good audio quality bits then... ITS SUCKS
If you are wanting to upgrade to an "HD" camera and think this is going to do the job... Forget it...

This camera along with all other flip, slide, and small handheld "HD" cameras offer a crappy 480p resolution AT BEST, not the 720p-1080p they boast to have (quality is more than a file type). Obviously since they are so small, any interference in sound (wind, bumps, thuds, laughing in the background when someone busts their face open) is maximized dramatically...

Now if your little brother or whatever he is, is just kind of a chill dude who wants to take some funny videos, play around, doesn't really need a quality camera, then for the price this camera is one of the better cameras of its type.

Again, compared to other flip/handeld/mini HD cameras, this is one of the better cameras. Just dont expect the video to stun you and dont expect to capture your bands newest music video in any kind of HD audio or video quality.

Oh and another good thing about this camera is that its SUPER easy and fast to upload your videos to the web...
