I'm saving up money for a decent prosumer/professional camcorder. I understand that the great quality ones are all well over $5,000.

But I've been looking at the Canon GL2 Mini DV and the Panasonic AG-DVC20 and want to know which ones better. I'm planning on making Indie Films and submitting them into Film Festivals.

Any other camcorder under $2000 that you recommend would be great too!
thanks in advance!

Answer
For under 2k you have plenty of other options that are much better than the two you mentioned.

For your price range, I would seriously look into buying a Panasonic DVX100 or Canon XL2. These are two of the best DV cameras out there. While some sites will make it seem like these cameras are out of your price range, there are plenty of legitimate places to find them used, in great condition with low usage. You can probably even find a new DVX for your price. I think even if you buy one used, you will be much happier with it than, say, a GL2. Those cameras have been on the market for ages and are no longer worth the retail price they're sold for.

If you need help finding the right deal, you can email me at SK3055@yahoo.com. And don't forget about leaving money in your equipment budget for sound!

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?

Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

Answer
Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

When I connect my Sony Dcr-Trv11 camcorder to my mac via firewire, the mac does not recognize it. I have an imac osx tiger and imovie. I have found places online that say that this is possible, but I have had no luck yet. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Answer
The Sony DCR-TRV11 camcorder is miniDV tape based.

What are you expecing the Mac to do? Nothing will automatically "pop up".

Connecting a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port - with the camcorder in "Play" or "VCR" mode, launch iMovie,
Name the project,
select the video project destination folder,
select DV (presuming you captured the video in 4:3 standard definition mode - select DV widescreen if the video was captured in that mode.
Create.
The iMovie Import screen should appear.

You did not tell us which Mac. It is possible that the Firewire port is inactive. System Preferences: Network: Port Status. Be sure there is a check mark in the firewire box.

It is also possble that the firewire cable or the camcordeer's firewire port is bad.

How to connect Panasonic 3CCD camcorder to Apple power book to download the recorded movies?

Tom K.

I've connected the camcorder to the Mac using the USB port, but I am unable to access the camera. I tried using iMovie to no success. When I was using a PC I was able to access the camera and transfer the movies. I was hoping to be able to do the same with the Apple. The main reason I purchased the Mac was for the ease of editing and creating DVDs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
you must install a mac driver for your camera if you opt to use the usb port. if you cannot find a driver, you will need to use the firewire port.

What is the best setting for taking sports videos of my kids on Panasonic DMC-FZ28?

best digital video camcorder for sports
on Best DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) Cameras ~ TechSoulz
best digital video camcorder for sports image

Jack

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 digital camera. When I video my 12 year olds soccer game, it's always very blurry unless I keep the zoom all the way out. But then I can't get any close up shots of just her or her teammates. I'd like to zoom in to some foot work or individual players doing some awesome moves or taking shots on goal. Is there a special setting that I should set the camera at to take video that is clear and close up? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jack, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since you are asking this in the Y!A Camcorders section, most of us here will be quick to tell you that you are using a digital photo camera that's mostly designed for still photos, with "video mode" added as a convenience feature, not a primary use.

Shooting video with a point-&-shoot or DSLR camera is always a compromise. And during video mode, very few cameras like yours have decent "Image Stabilization" (you might also be zooming into the "digital zoom" range, which makes things always look worse, detail-wise and anti-shake-wise).

For action shots or "shots on goal" I'd recommend just sticking with the Lumix's strengths in photo-mode: High Speed Burst Shooting (11-13 shots per second). And turn OFF the auto-focus feature, which is probably "hunting" during your video shots, especially when zoomed-in. It will also interfere with steady focus during action still shots. (Learn to pre-focus for the average distance to the soccer field, then you won't have focus lag to deal with.)

There is a "Sports Mode" setting on your Lumix, so if you aren't adept at manual shutter speed and exposure settings, try that first. (It probably won't help in video mode, as few still-photo cameras have sophisticated shooting mode options for video operation.)

And lastly, all non-tape digital cameras at the consumer level use high-levels of compression to store video footage, which drops over 75% of the actual frames & uses mathematical algorithms to store & rebuild "approximations" of the missing frame info. This is the main reason they produce blocky/blurry action sequences, especially with close-up detail from zoomed-in images. (Zoomed out images have more grass & sky, which is easier to compress & decompress, since the color and detail repeats so much.)

Shop around for a good new or used mini-DV format camcorder (I buy them on eBay all the time for under-$100, with careful shopping from reliable sellers). Canon sells their current HV40 (and occasionally their older HV30) camcorder for around half-price for factory refurbished models on their Shop Canon USA website. Older non-HD Canon, Sony, and JVC mini-DV models shoot even better action footage (less compression, since HD uses almost 4-times the image data) and you can still get models with 16:9 widescreen modes to fit modern HDTV set screens.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Could you recommend a decent prosumer digital camcorder?

Pavel Bara

I'd like to follow my dream and shoot my first short film, but I have to buy a camcorder first. What camcorder is the most suitable for those on a tight budget, allowing in the meantime a lot of artistic opportunities? By "tight budget" I mean no more than 1500 dollars.
The camcorder should support PAL or NSTC, not miniDVD.

Answer
HD camcorders & DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi processor computer with the big Graphics and sound cards that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files a HD camcorder produces.

Consumer level HD camcorders & DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

I reaserched between the sony xperia c & samsung galaxy grand. I found out that the xperia has a 0.3 mp front cam wheras the grand has a 2mp front cam.The xperia has a 4gb memory whereas the grand has 8gb. I dont have budget prblms but which one do you think is better? Please help!

Answer
Sony has given the Xperia C its signature design aesthetic with its well defined rectangular shape, barely there curves and its premium build quality. The handset is slimmer, sleeker and lighter than its competitor and thus more portable.

The Galaxy Grand Duos looks like a typical Samsung handset with its curved edges, large body and plasticy casing. Though not as light and portable as the Xperia C, the handset is convenient to hold and use.

Display
The Xperia C packs in a 5-inch TFT qHD display that comes with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a pixel density of 220ppi. The screen is clear and quite sharp, and its size makes it ideal for communication and entertainment on the go.

The Galaxy Grand Duos sports a 5-inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 187ppi. Its size makes it useable for media and entertainment and its screen is clear and easy on the eyes, though it lacks the sharpness of its competitor.

Sony wins the display round with its sharper display.

Camera

The Xperia C comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, Exmor R sensor which allows user to capture images in challenging light conditions. In addition the phone is also capable of shooting videos in full-HD (1080p) mode. The camera comes with features like face detection and Sweep Panorama. The phone also sports a 0.3-megapixel front camera. Also, the phone body comes with a dedicated camera button that lets you access it in a jiffy.

Samsung Galaxy Grand also has a 8 MP primary camerathat comes with an LED flash and a very powerful BSI sensor. The smartphone comes with features such as geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization. The camera allows HD filming at 30 frames per second. The phone has a 2 MP secondary camera. The primary or the rear camera comes equipped with picture modes catering to user requirements. The user can also adjust the brightness of the shooter to take clearer and brighter images with the camera even in dull indoor conditions. Some great camera modes in the camera include the Burst, Smile and Panorama. The Panorama mode provides a maximum angle 180 degree for the panorama pictures.

The analysis suggests that the Xperia C fares better in terms of having a quad-core processor, powerful battery and better resolution. On the other hand, Samsung scores in terms of storage capacity and better front facing camera.

video camera suggestions for action movies?

Q. Hi, I am searching for good videocamera that got 1080p and high-speed so there won't be any motionblur. So I was looking at the HR-115CX and wondering if it is any good? come with more suggestions if you know wanother good one. (It HAS to be atleast 60FPS so I can make slow motion ffects)

Answer
you won't like what i have to say, but it is based on experience.

first motion blur has nothing to do with the frame rate. almost every CCD video camera ever made has independent shutter speed ranging from 1/100 to 1/1000 second. the only limitation on shutter speed is available light, but normal daylight will allow for a pretty fast shutter.

second is the fact that ALL digital video except for miniDV uses "Group of Frames" architecture. Only movie cameras and miniDV take video as successive frames, making accurate slo motion analysis possible. The most common HD codec, AVCHD uses a fixed GOF of eight. That means an effective frame rate of 4 FPS, the missing frames are guessed at on playback. The interpolation process can be very inaccurate with action sports. i think that is the source of what you are calling motion blur. Going to 60 FPS won't help, you will still have 7 missing frames for each actual one.

third is datarate. the more data, the better the quality. miniDV is 25 Mbps, your camera is 6 Mbps, which wins? if you must go with HD, then HDV is the best solution. It has high datarate and MPEG2 codec which allows for variable GOF to keep up with action.

These are the most essential reasons that professional action sports is almost universally done with miniDV format camcorders.

Can the new Sony Webbie HD Camcorder fit an XLR adapter to it?

best hd camcorder xlr

Can you fit an XLR adapter to the new Sony Webbie HD Camcorder?

Answer
No.

The "Webbie", as the name suggests, is a video camera optimized for internet video... in other words, it's an ultra-low-end model. Sony sure knows how to make a camcorder... I have several of theirs, it's a fine brand. But you don't get extra features at the low-end.

So, there's no microphone jack, and the built-in mic is mono-only. Like most of this sort of camcorder, it's closer in design to a digital still camera's video mode than to a standard camcorder: tiny lens, no optical zoom, higher levels of video compression, etc.

What you might do is use an off-camera recorder. A MiniDisc recorder, a digital flash recorder, an iPod with one of the recording adapters, even a laptop computer with a decent microphone (if you don't have a mic jack on the laptop, you can get "USB" mics, which are basically just microphones with USB audio interface built-in).

XLR mics are generally higher-end stuff... my $2600 camcorder came with XLR jacks on it, but my cheaper ones, not so much. You can get an XLR to 3.5mm plug adaptor for devices that take an external mic, from a company called BeachTek... but they probably cost more than your "Webbie" did, just for the interface. See here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=beachtek&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2FRootPage.jsp&A=search&Q=%2A&bhs=t&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

If you're using off-camera mics, the trick is to properly synchronize audio, so that when you want to sync it up (this presumes you're doing some video editing on a computer), it's easy to find the sync point. You've seen this done before, though you might not know it. That stereotypical "clap-board" you see around movie-making... that's what it's for. High end film cameras don't have on-camera sound, and professional film makers have their own crew for recording sound. The "clap" made by the clapboard provides the synchronization point for the multiple audio and video recording devices.

I use similar things all the time to match up video from two and three camera shoots. Even if the "Webbie" audio isn't all that great, it'll record your sync noise and make it easy to match up some better off-camera source.

What are the differences between a camcorder and a professional video camera?

malindabro

Are there huge differences in the video quality you can get from a HD consumer camcorder and a little "professional" cameras...the type videographers and local news stations use on location. What are the other main differences in capability?

Answer
Consumer camcorders have small lenses and small imaging chip(s). This combination results in their not doing too well in low-light situations. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have much larger lenses and larger imaging chips.

Consumer camcorders' manual controls are generally not easily accessible. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have easily accessible manual zoom, manual focus, manual iris/exposure, manual shutter and manual audio controls... and neutral density filters and video gain control.

Many consumer camcorders generally do not have any mic jack or other audio-in capability other than the built-in mics. A few have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack (but generally no manual audio control). Prosumer models generally have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack with manual audio control. Pro-grade camcorders have built-in XLR audio connectors.

Consumer camcorders are generally built to be used hand-held, even though no one should ever do that. Prosumer models are larger - and while designed to be hand held, rarely are; the large ENG (Electronic News Gathering) pro models are nearly always shoulder mountable. The advantage of the shoulder mount translates into a much steadier shot - though a tripod or camera crane or other steadying device would be steadier than shoulder mount.

Other features like frame rate, interlaced vs progressive frame capture, add-on lens selection and quality, LANC (a wired remote) jack availability, matte box availability, filter selection, will also come into play.

You will also find that the vast majority of the pro camcorders use miniDV tape or save to an external hard drive that stores in DV or HDV format (same as miniDV tape). Panasonic has a few new internal hard drive or flash memory pro-grade camcorders. Red has a family of them. Sony, Canon and JVC pro lines continue to be on the DV/HDV page.

In good daylight, tripod mounted, no movement of the subject or the camera, with normal audio levels, it would be a challenge to differentiate 1080i/p 30fps video. Deviate from this, and the differences get very obvious, very quickly. Video is captured under lots of different lighting conditions, there may not be time to set up a tripod, and audio levels can be from 0 to REALLY LOUD in an instant... and the reason we capture video is for the motion...

Under many conditions, the ENG camcorder audio is not even used even though it is captured - an external field recorder (Edirol, Zoom, Marantz, M-Audio, Fostex) is used to capture the audio you end up hearing on TV and a separate audio person is employed just to be sure the audio is correctly captured.

So yes, there are huge differences - which is why a low-end consumer camcorder costs less than $300 and a decent pro camcorder can be as low as $3,000 or as high as $60,000...

But a skilled person with a low-end camcorder will always capture much better video than a non-skilled person with the most expensive camcorder...

I've searched and most reviews say it's bad in the dark or makes ticking noises or maybe is too expensive. I'm looking for a good camera with HD video, good photos, far zoom ( x10 or higher ), and doesn't get grainy in the dark.

The Canon Vixia HV40 is a slightly refined version of the spectacular HV30. Great lens, very good ease of use and features, and great results. There really isn't much to say about these cameras that hasn't already been said. So your decision really isn't about the camera and its features - it's about whether to buy a tape-based camcorder.

I'm 16 and I need a digital camera, I don't think I want to spend more than $300. I like the touch screen ones but I want a good quality camera as well. I was thinking a 12 mega pixel. Any recommendations?

Answer
First of all, the number of mega pixels is the LAST thing you should be concerned about. If you are looking for cameras in this price range you are most likely going to be getting an advanced point and shoot (P&S) type camera and these models usually use relatively small image sensors. That means that, to get a high MP count they have to use smaller pixels which causes the maker to make compromises in other image qualities. See this link if you want more information ~

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

The main advantage of high MP counts is they allow you to make larger prints from you photos. Generally 4x6 inch is the standard photo size, so unless you are planning to make many prints of photos larger than standard page size (8.5 x 11 inches) you don't need more than 6-10 MP. Also, remember that the higher the MP count the smaller the number of pictures you can store on a memory card.

What you really need to do is ask yourself "What will I use the camera for?"

- If you want to have something that is easy to carry around look at compact models.
- If you want to be able to take pictures at events and parties you probably want one with good flash and/or high ISO capabilities (where lower MP are usually better). And face or smile detection might be important!
- If you want to do videos you want one with good sound recording capability. Again lower MP often means you can shoot longer clips before you have to stop.
- If you do a lot of sports or vigorous outdoor activities you might look at rugged waterproof models.

Consider these factors and then determine which ones are most important to you then find models that have as many of the features you want and are in your price range.

Good brands to look for with P&S models are, in alphabetical order -

Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony

I have been impressed with models from Sony, Canon and Olympus.

Here is a link to a comparison chart for a range of models (note there are multiple pages) they do not provide a way to eliminate models by $$$ so look at the price first and you can remove cameras that exceed your price range.

Answer
Besides your initial selections, you may want to look into this real high value digital camera.

If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28_pg5.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing skateboarding, action sports; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

Well as a cinematographer I have used a lot of cameras but it narrows down to only a few I'd suggest for under $250. First is Somy DCR-SX45, It's about $200. I am
currently using one of theses as a secondary camcorder that I take everywhere instead of taking my Canon XLH1 everywhere.
The second camera I'm gonna suggest is waterproof which is the Kodak Playsport (Zx5), about $159.00. I use this camera when skiing/snowboarding, canoeing/kayaking, swimming, and anytime it is suppose to rain.

After much, much online research,I highly recommend this ...

The overall positive reviews on this mini-dvd camera are warranted. This is a great little camera for the money that produces some very good video. I have a Panasonic DVX100B, and I initially purchased this camera as a low cost video deck alternative, so I wouldn't wear out the motor on the DVX while downloading video footage into my computer...and this camera serves that purpose very well. But, I found that this camera is just a fun overall camera to have just to shoot video on the run without the need to set up a bunch of other equipment.

I highly recommend this camera.

What webcam or camcorder is good to make youtube videos?

comando co

What I am wanting to know is what is are good brands and models of webcams and camcorders to make youtube videos with. I would like to get one of each but dont know really what a good webcam is.

Answer
There are lots of very good webcams out there if you don't buy the cheapest ones so I would probably recommend one of those. As the previous poster mentioned, Youtube videos aren't all that high of resolution, so I think a webcam would serve you perfectly fine as you don't need the higher resolution of a camcorder in my opinion, unless you have one lying around.

As for which would be good, Microsoft seems to have some good ones (there is one that has 3000 in its name...I think it is a pretty good one and isn't that expensive online) and Creative and Logitech also have good offerings. As long as it is a decent webcam, you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck to you!

Could anyone tell me what they think the best pocket camcorder for around £150 is. I quite like the idea of a pistol grip one. At the minute I am thinking of a sanyo xacti cg10. Any recommendations. Thanks.

Answer
i can tell you exactly what NOT to get, avoid any chinese brand ones, they make massive amounts of cheap tiny pocket video cameras that run on AA battery (which they suck dry in minutes).
definatly get a brand one like sony, panasonic, jvc, hitachi, etc...

I am looking to purchase a high end camcorder and I'm thinking about B&H Photo-Video. I am in California and would have to purchase online but their prices are really good and want to make sure they're reliable before making a big purchase like this. Are they good?

Answer
100% YES, from personal experience. They are among the best in the industry, very well-respected here in New York. I go there all the time whenever I need anything; it's like being a kid in a candy store.

Their prices are so good because they are so darned big; they're not like some other shady Internet sites that ship you defective or grey-market goods. B&H does it the right way.

I have never had a problem with them, except for one minor issue with a software version; they ended up accepting my return with no problem.

Definitely go for it, and buy with confidence. They're the go-to guys here in New York, and the same holds true nationwide. They get two thumbs up from me.

What current camera has very quick auto focus?

best camcorder 2012 image

Jay

I usually use cameras for videos and I'm looking for one with 1080p HD video with very quick autofocus (up close and far back), bright colors, etc. I also kinda want one that is current so maybe one that came out this year or 2012, no later. I'm not really looking to spend a ton of money for a DSLR, so preferably a digital camera or something please. I look up reviews on youtube to see which I like best so please leave your suggestions.

Answer
For video you don't want auto focus. It's a gimmick that doesn't work. It's slow and the focus is always jumping around trying to find a spot to focus on.

I use only manual focus and it works the very best on any video camera dslr or camcorder.

Can I shoot Snowboard videos with a Camcorder that shoots 30 FPS?

Leopold

Since the 2011/2012 snowboard season just came up I thought it might be a cool idea to film some of it. There is a really good deal for a camcorder at a local store and it shoots in HD with 30 FPS. Are 30FPS enough to film sport videos clearly? Please help, thanks a lot!

Answer
A speed of 30 fps is adequate, and it has the added advantage of being compatible with a lot of other equipment you might need to use, such as editing systems.

How clear each of the 30 frames per second looks depends on how much light you have. In bright sunlight, you can use fast shutter speeds and each frame will be very sharp and distinct ⦠although this can produce an undesirable stroboscopic effect in extremely bright light. In low light, each frame will be blurry. In both cases, motion will be reasonably smooth.

If you want really smooth motion, you need much higher frame rates, but few cameras (especially consumer models) are capable of higher rates. A camera that shoots 60 fps progressive can provide a great improvement, although displaying the results may still be problematic since it requires a compatible display or TV set. Higher rates work even better but require specialized cameras and often specialized editing and display equipment.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Q. What's the best camcorder for making YouTube videos? None of the flip cameras please.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

I use a Canon ZR930 camcorder and Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate to import, edit and save out the finished file as a 1080P file for upload to youtube.

Nathan

I am looking to buy a 12.3 megapixel Nikon D5000 dslr. The problem is it only shoots 720p video. I was wondering if I buy another lens if it might allow me to shoot higher resolution video.

Answer
No

Video only uses a portion of the 12 mp camera sensor.

In the case of HD video, 1280x720p uses less than 1 mp (you can do the math) Even Full HD (1920x1080p) only uses 2.2 mp

Here is what you need to know about shooting video using essentially a still camera with a video feature

What is a good camera for concert video?

Amy

So I go to a lot of concerts and I have YouTube channel just for my concert videos. Currently I have a Kodak EasyShare m590 which has 720p HD video, but I'm beginning not to really like that(battery is dying quicker due to having it for 3 years, a little grainy, sound is not that great). I still love it but I think it's time for an upgrade. The places I go to do not allow professional cameras(any thing with a detachable lens) but any sort of point & shoot or ultra zoom are fine.Does anyone know what would be a good concert camera(HD, with a good zoom length, great sound) and is relatively affordable? Thanks!

Answer
I would go with Sony HDR-CX200. It supports full 1080p.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-CX200-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B006K551EO/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=informazcom-20

5.3 megapixel and 30x optical zoom (Which are good for concert videos). It has really good review. :D
Also, it has back illuminated Exmor CMOS sensor for superb low-light video

So I shot a couple of videos to put together while I was at school with my Kodak Sport. Now I've put the videos into the AVS Video Editor, but It's making the videos choppy and messed up. But when I play the recorded videos on my camera the playback is fine. What's happening to my videos?

Answer
Try to view in a different player. vlc is good or quicktime.

Try these free converters http://www.squared5.com http://www.handbrake.fr/ I like handbrake.

Free players http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ I like vlc

If you can view your videos is VLC then the problem may lie in your editing software, not being compatible.
If your camputer is old then that might be your problem, not enough hard drive, ram etc.

How can I keep my audio and video in sync?

Q. I have a 'Kodak Play sport' waterproof film camera that I have recently been trying to film on. The film quality is brilliant, and the audio quality fairly good, but only on the camera. When I import it onto my computer, the audio and video in both WMP (Windows Media Player) and WMM (Windows Movie Maker).
Any suggestions on how I can:
a) Remove audio lag using WMM.
b) Stop audio lag altogether on my camera.
c) Suggest an alternative free media editing suite to do a) with.
Thanks,
MiJ.

Answer
Clarification: You are "filming". There is no *film* involved. The digital video (and audio) device you are using captures video.

As you indicated during playback, the audio and video are in synch. When the media file is transferred to the computer, the audio and video are not in synch. This symptom (also sometimes referred to as being "glitchy", is *usually* due to the computer for one or more of the following reasons:

* The computer's CPU is underpowered for dealing with the video recorded.
* The media player cannot deal with the video.
* The computer does not have enough RAM.
* The computer does not have enough available hard drive space.
* The computer is doing other work using CPU cycles that the video needs to play properly.

For playback only, try VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/ as it is more robust than WMP. As for editors - in the Windows environment, Sony Vegas usually floats to the top... But not knowing the computer environment makes this a SWAG...
