Is B&H Photo-Video a reliable source to buy a camcorder?

Gern

I am looking to purchase a high end camcorder and I'm thinking about B&H Photo-Video. I am in California and would have to purchase online but their prices are really good and want to make sure they're reliable before making a big purchase like this. Are they good?

Answer
100% YES, from personal experience. They are among the best in the industry, very well-respected here in New York. I go there all the time whenever I need anything; it's like being a kid in a candy store.

Their prices are so good because they are so darned big; they're not like some other shady Internet sites that ship you defective or grey-market goods. B&H does it the right way.

I have never had a problem with them, except for one minor issue with a software version; they ended up accepting my return with no problem.

Definitely go for it, and buy with confidence. They're the go-to guys here in New York, and the same holds true nationwide. They get two thumbs up from me.

Is this a good video camera? I dont know anything about them. What should I be looking for?

Answer
Well, it seems not so good, but it is also kind of cheap. It is probably for beginners or children or something. But, still, I give it a thumbs down.

First of all, they don't specify on the resolution. If they say "high resolution", like they did, it could just be crap, and probably is. They don't tell you exactly what the resolution is. I would look for 720 x 480p. "i" is fine too.

And, it has a 4x zoom, but it's digital zoom. Digital zoom just crops out the image and magnifies it, greatly lowering the quality in the process. Most camera's digital zoom is in the 100's! So, yeah, that's crap.

You're going to want to look for optical zoom, not digital, and if it is digital, make sure the number is in the hundreds! 4x digital zoom is the crappiest zoom I have ever heard of! Seriously!!!

Also, it's a kid's camera. and it's 50 bucks, (not including shipping)! And look at the maker of it. "Jazz Cameras"? I have never heard of them. I would look for Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.

And, he said, "this is not only the best camera for kids that this company has ever made it is also the best value on the market." First of all, that company probably mad only one camera or something. And, sure it's a good value, it's a crappy camera!

THIS IS A TOTAL SCAM!

Believe me, once it gets to you, it'll turn out to be some piece of crap. They're tricking you. There are so many gaps in the information. It's at least too basic for a 13-year-old. It sounds like it's either crap or for babies.

A popular camcorder is the Sony Handycam. It is widely used, so I would recommend it. Look for that one.

Keep looking, and remember Sony Handycam is probably good. And, look out for the things I told you about. You want at least 18x OPTICAL zoom, at least 720 x 480 resolution, which is standard for most camcorders including DVD and MiniDV, (tapes). If you want high definition, that is 1920 x 1080, but cameras that can shoot in that are expensive and rare, but are becoming more common. I think Handycams shoot in that now, (but, again, they are the expensive kind). (And, make sure they tell you what the resolution is. Don't just let them say "high resolution".) And, make sure you check out the maker of it, (like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.). Make sure it isn't a scam and good luck!

How & When to Market Yourself in Football/Soccer?

pooch love

I'm almost 13 and know that I want to go as far as I can with soccer (to play WPS or make the national team). I realize that I'll need to eventually market myself, so what do I or my parents need to be documenting along the way? Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of money for me (I'm one of six kids!) to participate year after year in programs such as ODP. Even though there may be scholarships, it still costs my family a lot to travel. My dad says that "if you're good...you're good and won't need to get your name out there among ODP". So I figure that I'll train hard (I'm homeschooled so I practice alot) and eventually tryout at an age when it really matters (like when you can be on a regional team). Does that sound reasonable?
I don't know how to keep stats and my mom often deletes my games in order to make room on the camcorder for new games. Can someone help me with how I should keep stuff for my future? Also at what age can I start contacting coaches? (I don't mean to brag, but I know that I have a shot because I've had two prominent coaches from two different states think that I was good). I know how so many people dream or talk about going far, but I am not going to quit working hard. Thanks for any advice in helping me! JOGA BONITO!!

small video camera for skiing?

Stephanie

I am looking for a video camera that fits inside of my jacket pocket so I can record my kids skiing. It has to have zoom capability. Any suggestions?
I have an Iphone, but they are not good enough quality. I was looking into Sony - HDR-CX130/B HD or
Sanyo - 3.0MP Camcorder with 2.7" Color LCD Widescreen.

Answer
The Sony is a full-size camcorder, which may be a little bulky for your jacket pocket. The Sanyo looks like a much better size for your pocket.

There are a lot of small video cameras on the market, but most of them lack optical zoom. I have a Kodak PlaySport ZX3 which lacks optical zoom (the digital zoom is too poor quality to be useful) and its low-light performance leaves something to be desired. I also have a Flip camera which also lacks optical zoom.

The down side of all of the above cameras, including the ones you mention, is that you need to stop, pull the camera out of your pocket, take your video clip, and put the camera away. You lose a lot of shots because it's too much hassle.

I just bought a Contour HD Helmet Cam and it's very convenient for skiing. It lacks any kind of zoom whatsoever, and there is no screen, but the video quality is pretty good. I start recording as I get off the chair lift, and stop at the bottom. See this example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-ScXVUv-N0.

Answer
What is your budget?

All miniDV camcorders use firewire to transfer video (from the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on your computer). MiniDV tape will provide you the best available video quality.

Pricing camcorders is odd... there are lots of choices from about $300 to $500 for standard definition (DV) palmcorder-handycam types. Like the Canon ZR family and the Sony DCR family.

Then there is a jump to around $700-$800. The Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9 do both standard definition (DV) and high definition (HDV) and have external mic jacks and have full manual audio control...

Then there is a jump to $2000 and more...

What equipment is needed to copy old home movies filmed in the 1960's to a DVD?

trcp

I think they are 8MM movie film. Need to know what machine I would need to get to play the tapes on. These films used to be played on movie projectors. These movies are not from camcorders. Would prefer to do it myself since there are about 50 movies. Need advice on how to get started.

Answer
Funny thing... I have a box of single-8mm films (there are two kinds of 8mm... single-8mm, with holes along one side, and double-8mm, with holes along both sides) and an ancient projector here somewhere in my computer room. When I was a little kid, my Dad used to take these films, 6 minutes per roll, in the days before autoexposure, autofocus, and zoom lenses (at least for regular consumers).

You're going to need some kind of projector... single 8 or double 8.. it's not any more complex than that. I have seen these from time to time at yard sales and flea markets -- most people just want to get rid of them. First thing you need to do is figure out which kind you have.

So, with that, there are two basic methods for transfer. Once is I guess fairly obvious: you set up your projector and hopefully a real movie screen (screens have highly reflective bits in them, so you get a better picture than you would with the usual fallback, a white wall). You set your camcorder up, frame it on the projector, and show movies.. that's it.

The other means is essentially the same, but with extra gear... a telecine box. This is a device that routes your projected image onto a bit of diffuse glass or plastic.. kind of in the way rear-projection TVs work. You can get these (or used to be able to, anyway) with camera mounts, and so, you would mount your camera securely in front of the screen, start the projector, and there you go. This is likely to do a better transfer, because it's transmissive.. the light you're recording comes directly from the projector, it's not reflected back, as in the case of the movie screen.

I put an eBay link for a telecine device below.. they're all over eBay. I don't know how well they work, but I rekon better than taping off a screen. If you're lacking the projector, you can find them there, or as I suggested, yard sale/flea market, if you're not a rush.

Finally, if you're interesting in streamling this even more, you could use your camcorder in camera mode, and connect the analog output (if you have one) to a dedicated DVD recorder. Knowing my Dad's results on 8mm, I would want to maintain reasonable editing options, so I would use my camcorders and tape, but I figured I would mention this.
