What is a good and affordable camcorder to shoot martial arts fights?

Alan

I want to make short martial arts videos for this karate school, and want to get all the action as clear as possible, which camcorder would be recommended for this task?

Answer
Buy a HD camcorder that shoots 1080/60p. The 1080 means the number of lines on the screen, and is important to get full HD quality. The 60p means 60 frames per second, progressive, and is important in order to be able to record motion smoothly. Also, make sure that the camcorder has at least 2 megapixels (for video, not for photos), in order to profit from the full sharpness of HD.

I am looking for an HD Camcorder with a 1080p resolution and at least 50x optical zoom, any suggestions please and can you tell me also the price ranges of a camcorder with these specs?
Thanks.
@ Nihal: not more than 650 euro its about 900$

@ Iridflare: Now I have the SONY DCR-SX40 and it has 60x zoom and 720p resolution and I am really enjoying this great zoom but the quality of the video still poor if we compared to a 1080p resolution camera.

@ Dana Bash: the Canon HF S10 is a Good camera but it has only10x O.Z.

@ Andrew: LoL I will think of it.

Well, exluding the 50x optical zoom option, can you tell me what is the 1080p resolution camcorder with the highest optical zoom now on market?
I am thinking of the JVC enverio GZ-HD300 and it has a 20x O.Z .

Answer
Off the top of my head I can't think of any HD camcorders like that. Can you explain why you need at least 50x optical zoom, please? Very high zooms like that are almost unusable - if you've got a specific need, there may be another way to deal with it.

I want a new camera. it needs to have a sports setting, be digital, and either be waterproof or i can buy a waterproof case that would fit it. it can't be too expensive. I would like it to be able to fit it into my pocket for nights out with friends. thanks!

Answer
Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera would be perfect for you.

I am a Canon diehard fan. But Canon will not have anything that compares to Kodak Playsport HD waterproof pocket video camera. At 1080P the video clip recording is acceptable. But, at 720p and 60 frames per second this camera rocks, the outcomes are great. I've applied it close to and in water, the blue filter helps beneath water. I am preparing to utilize this for our Disney World this holiday from the water parks.

This camera takes 5MP HD Stills, so now I've a camera that may get video and stills on demand moist or dry. I have other camera's inside the same class like Flip and Samsung each tend not to evaluate, even at 720p 60 frames per 2nd. $150.00 pricetag can also be really affordable.

Simple to carry, very person friendly to move files through the digital camera towards the personal computer or right to Youtube. Nightvision could be good but most of my recordings will likely be in Daylight. Bottom line fantastic digital camera and I've no cons to talk about.

anyone know what type of tripod the Kodak Play Sport ZX5 requires?

Thomas

Hi thinking of buying this inexpensive waterproof video for the beach late this month - I do not want to be temped to take my costly unit. But on amazon I cannot find if it has a standard tripod mount

Answer
Yes, it uses a standard 1/4 inch tripod mount. Just buy any low cost tripod as weight is not a factor.

Here is a photo of the bottom of the camera showing the tripod socket:

We have a Sony digital video camera that records on a small magnetic tape. When we watch recordings of our kids sports events, you can pause the recording and the still image on the TV is fantastic! Is there a way to turn these still images into photographs that can be developed at the drug store? I haven't tried taking a picture of the TV screen yet, we're looking for something a little higher tech.

Answer
Most editing programs will let you do a screen capture. This would be done on the computer.

video camera high quality for low price?

ballerkate

I need to find a fairly inexpensive digital video camera.

I will use it to compile sports tape, so it must take good quality video.
I will also use it for 2 school video projects which, mean i need to be able to upload video to the school computers for editing.

What is the best digital video camera i can get for a fairly low price?

Answer
Ok.. given school, you need to be sure you're getting a camcorder that can work with the school computers. Most will, but for example, if the class isn't video-oriented, they may not have Firewire, which is the standard for all tape-based camcoder transfers to computer.

Without offering a price limit, this is a hard question to in return offer specifics. You can pay serious green for a very good quality camcorder... you can pay under $100 for a "Flip" style web-camcoder. There are dozens of cheap camcorders like this: cheap non-zoom lens, horrible low-light capability, weird recording formats. I can recommend the Flip only because the software is good.. the video is still poor, but they're easy to use. Aipitek, DXP, and many other Chinese flash-card camcorders have similar quality, but no decent software support.

The best deal I've seen lately for a high-def camcoder was a Hitachi Blu-Ray based model (far from the best HD camcorder, but not too bad in bright sunlight) for $299.. but that's over. Usually, you're going to pay $500+ for a high-def camcorder.

Regular consumer camcorders, more likely to be in the $200-$400 range... there are dozens of options, and I don't know what you're looking for well enough to suggest anything. Look at http://www.camcorderinfo.com for reviews and suggestions.

You can get really good standard-def video these days in most modern still photo cameras. Any 640x480 mode is likely to rival the 720x480 mode you get in all standard-def camcorders. My daughter is in a "Communications Academy" in High School, they do video projects all the time. While I've offered a few video camera to her for these things, most of the video she shoots in on her Pentax pocket digital camera (last Christmas' present). I paid about $100 for that camera.

And if this is just for two projects.. borrow something. Even if you think you're going on in video work, rushing to buy something for just one project is usually a formula for disappointment.

Why do digital video cameras have huge zooms but photo cameras do not?

I have often wondered why a digital/Hard drive/flash drive/etc. video camera can sport up to a 50x optical zoom, whereas the largest digital photo camera zoom i have seen (excluding humongous, extremely expensive SLR zoom lenses) is 20x on an Olympus. Is it too hard to get a high-quality 50x zoom onto a camera, or what?

Answer
There is nothing to guess about. There are two reasons for this.

First, the sensor size. Because most video cameras, regardless of what kind, don't capture video in 6, 8 or 10 megapixels they way a still camera will, the sensor can be smaller.

When the sensor gets smaller, it's easier to get that extra zoom because of a crop factor.

Next, would be size. Along with a tiny sensor, video cameras are generally larger than digital point and shoots. With that larger and deeper size, three is room for a larger lens.

There is nothing stopping you from getting 50x from a digital point and shoot. But the sensor size might have to drop, and it might be a lower resolution, like 2 or 4 megapixels for example. Next, you'll have a huge lens to deal with.

As sensor size increases, like say in a digital SLR, there is no way to get around the fact that you need a huge lens just to match the reach of a decent compact digital zoom. So the bottom line, it's a law of physics that stops you from getting a monster zoom on a tiny camera, it's not because camera companies don't want to do it.

What kind of video camera should I buy to shoot a sporting event?

Larry

I may be hired to work as a freelance videographer for high school sporting events. The company wants me to use my own equipment to shoot the games, which I am in the process of getting. They recommend I have an HD Prosumer camera. I've done some research, and I saw the Canon VIXIA HF G10 was pretty good and not overly priced. Does anyone have any recommendations about what other types of video cameras I can buy or give any more input about this camera I've look into? Also, is it best to get a camera that has the viewfinder on the side of the camera or on top of it?

Answer
For sports/fast action, generally something that does not do high compression AVCHD. Like a Sony HDR-FX7. Of course, this assumes your computer has a firewire port. If it does not and you are not willing to add one, then the Canon HF G series is decent.

You will also want a tripod (it can double as a monopod is you only extend one leg). You really should not capture video handheld. And your computer may need upgrading (CPU, RAM, fast external hard drive, video editor) to deal with the AVCHD compressed video.

If you are capturing on a bright sunny day, the LCD panel can be difficult to see - so the eyepiece viewfinder is much more useful.

An optional high capacity battery from the camcorder manufacturer is a good idea.

A shoulder-mount rig may be helpful, too.

If someone runs into you and breaks the camera, who pays to fix it?

Good luck.

What is the best camcorder within 1000 dollars to film football with?

Answer
im not recommending a specific model but just general tips on what to get. if you want to edit and have slightly better picture quality, get a miniDV cam. if you just wanna record and watch, then go for miniDVD cams. if i were you, id get a miniDV cam for your purposes, cos you have more flexiblity with what you can do, and the extra time needed to burn to DVD is minimal.

when buying, a large optical zoom is great, but lesser optical zooms will work. ignore digital zoom. make sure the camera has a manual shutter control and white balance. manual focus and aperture are great, but not necessarily required, but when possible, look for all four.
you can get a 3ccd cam for under 1000 and they enhance your picture quality. also, look for optical stabilization. it will help, but is not essential. top loading cams are a plus, as you can load a tape in without taking it off the tripod.

when recording, bring a tripod if possible. the tripod can be used when you are moving to help stabilize shots also, (lengthen the legs and fold them together so its like a monopod, then hold it at the center and walk). get shots from different angles (when possible), it will make the video more interesting than just staring at one angle the whole time.

you can go to www.camcorderinfo.com to search for cameras. panasonic's pv-gs series has a lot of the features i mentioned here so you can take a look at them. hope this helps!

Whats the best consumer camcorder to buy?

Anonymous

Im an amateur movie maker, and I am looking for a camcorder under $1000. Picture quality and an external Mic hook up is what is most important to me, but i would like it to have a good manual focus as well. Easy of use is not that important to me. Any suggestions?

Answer
The only camcorders that meet your requirements - and has manual audio control - are the Canon HV40 and HF S100.

Get the HV40 if your computer has a firewire (IEEE1394) port and your editor can deal with HDV format video. Get the HF S100 if your computer only has USB and your editor can deal with AVCHD compressed MTS video.

Neither camcorder has a focus ring - but they both have a thumbwheel at the left-front of the camcorder that can be used as a manual focus control. Both are considered consumer camcorders because the lenses and imaging chip are small.

10,000 dollars aint bad, I'll go with that one

Answer
Greetings,

Assuming that you are shooting in a well lit area, the HV20 would be a great choice if you really need to save money. It has a Microphone input. Uses a true 1920x1080 image, does 24p or 24f and the price is pretty amazing for what you get. (It's $1,100 at B&H - see link.)

If you need a step up regarding lower light and XLR inputs, go with the Canon XH A1 HDV. See link also.

My favarite non-HDV camcorder is the Panasonic DVX-100b. But, at this point, I would really think good and hard about forking out that much money when the A1 is available in the same price range. (Panasonic, when are going going to go head-to-head with the A1?? When?)

Hope that helps...

What is the best Video Camcorder I could use for my film?

Timothy

My friends and I are making a Blair Witch Project-Esque "handheld cam" kind of film. It's being made on a tight budget. I need a COMPLETELY digital HD Camcorder. Something with great image quality. Any ideas?

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

I bought a macbook a year go and it was one without a firewire port. I'd like to buy a camcorder but most I've seen, need to have the firewire port on your mac to import the video. Are there any camcorders that I can buy and be able to edit the video on my mac without needing a firewire port? Thanks.

Answer
Pretty much any flash memory or hard disc drive camcorder has no firewire port and video files are copied over USB - then converted with a toll like MPEG StreamClip
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
for standard definition video files in mgp or mod files...

Or, if high definition, using iMovie '08 or newer for dealing with AVCHD/MTS video file types. Older iMovie versions won't deal with AVCHD/MTS files.

MiniDV tape camcorders are the only ones currently available - I know of - that do DV/HDV from the camcorder to the computer using firewire...

Can my camcorder videos be edited on iMovie?

Matt

I own a sony handycam HDR-PJ200. I see on the box that it is compatible with iMovie, but when I tried plugging it into my macbook via USB, none of the videos are accessable. I was just wondering if there is a way around this or if I need to get a PC just to edit the videos. I plan on doing videos on youtube using iMovie as my video editor. Now I'm not sure that I can. I would appreciate any advice.

Answer
Hi Matt:

What Charlie said is correct, about needing to open iMovie for it to be able to "see" your videos (iMovie menu: "File" -->"Import Movies"), but what you didn't tell us was which version of iMovie you have?

Your Sony Handycam shoots in H.264/AVCHD, and connects via USB. If you have iMovie '06 or earlier, they only work with DV & HDV cameras connected via FireWire. You need iMovie '08/'09/'11 for USB camcorders. Your Quicktime version also needs to be v7.5 or later, for the correct codecs. Some early versions of iMovie '08 require a free update to work with H.264 footage.

If you have one of the correct versions, here's an Apple KnowledgeBase article on troubleshooting steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059#3 [And make sure your Sony's menu is set to "USB Connect" in the "Connections" settings sub-menu.]

If you haven't worked with digital flash-card media before, make sure you navigate to the correct "VIDEO" folder & subfolders until you see .MP4 files, when using your Mac.

Apple also cautions about shooting flash-card video at less-than-best quality settings. Those files will be more highly-compressed, and iMovie might not recognize them.

Another troubleshooting tip, is to check that your USB camera connection is not going through any USB hub (use a connection on the MacBook). Hubs can cause problems with camera connections.

You know how to use the "Additional Details" link to update us on which iMovie version (and which Macbook model & OSX version, too!) you are using. The more detailed your Question, the better we can Answer.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What do those camcorder sensor numbers mean?

best camcorder sensor
 on Glodok Elektronik
best camcorder sensor image

Doug

I just bought a Sony HDRPJ260V. Manual says it has a 1/3.91 type, 4.2 mm sensor. 4.2 mm I hear means the diagonal of the image sensor. A Canon HF R300 camcorder has a 1/4.85 sensor. How can I tell what the diagonal is (isn't this the important thing, surface area of the sensor, one with 2X area should be 2X as good all other factors equal)? Should these numbers be proportional i.e. 4.2/(1/3.91)=X/(1/4.85)?

Seems like the manufacturers have conspired to purposely give you info that means nothing to you...or give you useful info but then conspire to not tell you how to interpret it. This reminds me of the megapixel hype nonsense in mini digital cameras but in reverse (manufacturers found higher MP ratings sold more cameras but more pixels in same size sensor does NOT necessarily mean a better image).

Answer
Hi again, Doug:

The diagonal measurement on camcorder & camera sensors can sound a lot like the TV marketing hype used for television set sizes (also measured diagonally, to sound "bigger").

Just like raw Megapixels specifications, the sensor size specs are only useful to a certain point. There are other minutiae like individual pixel size (in microns), Bayer color filter design, CCD versus CMOS, etc. Larger sensors can capture more light, helping with low-light sensitivity without "noise artifacts". But individual manufacturer's design & circuitry can affect this "signal to noise" ratio, as well as image detail.

The actual tradition of the diagonal measurement spec for video sensors dates back to the days of Vidicon & Plumicon imaging tubes (which were round). These were measured by diameter (1/2", 2/3", etc.) which if you draw the rectangular TV frame on it is approximately the same as the box's diagonal size. What makes it even more confusing is the practice of "improper fractions" (e.g., 1/3.91", instead of 1/4" which --heaven forbid!-- is 0.09" smaller).

You can peruse the excellent Wikipedia chart listing common sensor sizes (both diagonal & HxW meansurements): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensor_sizes#Table_of_sensor_formats_and_sizes One of the more illuminating (no pun intended) parts of the article text says,
"sensor areas... are proportional to the maximum possible collection
of light and image resolution [other things equal], but in practice are
not directly proportional to image noise or resolution due to other limitations."

You really have to look at 3rd party reviews (CNet, DP Review, Consumer Reports, etc.) to compare low-light image quality and lens/sensor image fidelity. Printed specs are a mere guideline, but you also have to "consider the source" when shopping.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What is the best camcorder choice for amateur filmmakers?

Eddie Maye

I enjoy making short films and currently use a kodak play-sport handheld camcorder. It is alright, but I could definitely improve my work with a higher quality camcorder. I could spend up to $500 dollars on a new camera. I'm not looking for anything professional grade, as I am aware that my budget is severely lacking. I want the camera to have a port for headphones and an external microphone. Any suggestion on what I should purchase?

Answer
The Vixia HF R200 is also one of the first entry-level devices in the VIXIA lineup to support 1920 x 1080 which translate to Full HD capabilities. This is because the it uses the newer Full HD CMOS Sensor that bumps the megapixel count to 3.28 so 1920 x 1080 images can be taken as well. It takes a few technologies that made their EOS DSLR cameras good to ensure that image quality is not sacrificed. In fact, it uses the same DIGIC DV III Image Processor that is found on the midrange VIXIA models so different tonal ranges are reproduced nicely including those tough blue and purple shades.

Answer
If you want bling, get a Hasselblad. (but it's good bling)

If you're shopping Walmart and Target, then you must not be looking at DSLR's or other serious cameras. They have a couple, but no lense support and very little helpful knowledge from the majority of the staff there.

There's not one BEST brand, as cameras take so many forms and cover such a wide range.

Do you want a pocketsize camera in pink?
Do you want a camera with 15x zoom?
Are you looking at image stabilization?
Is there a camera bag with classic SLR lenses in your house?
Are you planning to take sports or action shots?
Do you want a camera that's extra simple to operate?
Are you going to experiment with manual settings?
Is the ability to take video clips important?
Will being waterproof and shockproof make a difference?

These are all serious questions and would give you different camera brands as answers. The best brand camera is the one YOU are most comfortable holding in your hands to take the kinds of pictures you want.

Here's one link with some 'best cameras' reviews.

I just bought a Kodak Easyshare 7.1 MP camera at Radioshack, but they also sell them at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Office Max and Office Depot. The 6.1 MP is cheaper, so that would probably be best for a teen. I love my camera, it has so many awesome features, and it is extremely easy to use (so easy, you don't even need the manual they include). Even if you're not tech savvy, you won't have any problem with it. I paid $130 for mine, which is an excellent price for something of this quality, and the best part is it comes with a charger! No matter what camera you buy, make sure it runs on a RECHARGEABLE batter, because buying disposables is gonna cost you more in the long run. I just can't get over how awesome this camera is! It's really tiny, and you can also record video (but they come out in quicktime format, however, you can easily convert it). The pics come out crystal clear, and 7 megapixels means HUGE PICS! There are black/white & sepia filters, and also several different modes for taking pictures. I used the sport mode while I was riding on the train, and the pictures still came out absolutely perfect! I had a hard time finding it in the store, everywhere I called was nearly sold out! I understand why though, this is an awesome camera~!

Leave DVD cameras alone they are, of all camcorder available today the lowest quality. there are loads of problems, with disks not finalising, or reading.

You are better off getting a flash drive camera, light simple and not effect by vibration, or knocks.

you do not give a budget so its hard to help much more, decide on the amount of money you want to spend, then look at any of the large camera makers Sony, Canon, JVC, there will be something there to fit your budget.

I use a Canon ZR930 camcorder and Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate to import, edit and save out the finished file as a 1080P file for upload to youtube.

I would like a camera with very good quality, HD, and possibly under 1,000 dollars. I'm not sure if I should get a DSLR for this or a camcorder. Please help me out. I have no clue what is good and what is not.

Answer
To be honest, an HD camcorder is quite enough as DSLR is mainly for professional video makers. If you just want to get own videos or movies, HD camcorders could keep high quality as you say, what's more, it's not that expensive as DSLR.

But if you want to make professional videos, and manage several video editors, such as Sony Vegas, Windows Movie Maker, FCP X, iMovie and so on, you can choose DSLR.

Hope my answer helpful and Good Luck to You

what camcorder should I buy for a trip?

I'm going to Greece in oct. I need either a camera or camcorder that is easy & light. I've never owned anything but, a 35 mm . I want one that is easy to send pictures to family, will take still photos, low light, maybe, under 1,000 under 500 better.

Answer
To meet your requirements, we highly recommend a single chip CCD camcorder from Sony with miniDV, a long optical zoom, optical stabilization, and that is lightweight and compact.

Most consumer HD camcorders will fit your needs such as the compact Sony HDR-HC9 6MP MiniDV High Definition Handycam Camcorder + Deluxe Accessory Kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015CTI9G?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0015CTI9G , but it might have problems in low light. If you want to get very good quality, we recommend a professional camcorder such as the Sony HDR-FX7 3-CMOS Sensor HDV High-Definition Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IBDWNS?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000IBDWN - again, it might have some problems in low light - depending upon the conditions. You can look around and find it for $1,000.

A single ship CCD is recommended over CMOS in low light. CMOS can sometimes have difficulty in low light because it was designed for use in studios. CCD has excellent low light ability and single chip systems from Sony usually include an infrared IR beam emitter for use in low light or no light - as seen on ghost hunting and sport animal hunting shows.
- To make all this happen, CCD will need more electronic and power, so the CCD camera will definitely be heavier than a CMOS version (but not more than 2-4 lbs). You will want to consider high capacity batteries - explained farther below

There are many grand vistas and large buildings in Greece, so you will definitely need a long optical zoom with optical stabilization. Canon seems to be the leader in this department, but Sony is not far behind. Depending upon your camcorder, you may also want to consider an additional wide angle lens or telephoto lens to capture your subject in tight or extreme long distance situations - explained later

*** The most important consideration will be a camera that is as lightweight and compact as possible to allow you to operate with one hand without causing arm fatigue. You want a camera that will not be a hinderance and prevent you from taking it everywhere. The added advantage to a camcorder of these specs is that it is it very easy to store in your luggage, carry everywhere you go, and fit in a bag when entering places you are not allowed to film or photograph or do not want to record.

We recommend miniDV over DVD, hard drive, or flash memory.
- MiniDV is found everywhere and all over the world at economical prices. We use Panasonic AYDVM63PQ 63/42 Minute Professional Quality Mini-DV Digital Tape, 10 Pack http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANCZ50?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000ANCZ50 - twice the quality and half the price of consumer brands you find at Wal-Mart. Also, miniDV can be used in both standard definition miniDV cameras as well as HDV. Tapes normally come in 60 minute lengths, but you can also find 30 and 80 minute tapes.
- Flash Memory camcorders come in two versions: internal and external. Internal operate exactly like hard drive camcorders except they have no moving parts and are extremely lightweight and compact. External models are usually the lightest of all; however, You will need to purchase SDHC memory cards similar to Delkin 16 GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Class 6 Memory Card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001400C9O?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001400C9O . Smaller and more economical version of these memory cards are available, but you will need to carry a lot of cards - at least 80-100gb worth of cards which are easy to carry and jut as easy to lose.
- Hard Drives don't require anything, so you never have to carry or search for a tape, DVD, or memory card. That is until you fill up the hard drive, and then you must find a DVD burner or computer. If you purchase a hard drive camcorder, you might have to pack your laptop too - more weight, more hassle, and more time spent babysitting the camcorder instead of enjoying your trip. If you use this, you probably want to get a model with at least 80-100gb
- MiniDVD comes in two versions now - the older standard definition and the newer high definition Blueray (Blu-Ray or BD) - which required a specific BR DVD player or connection of the camera to the TV to view. Both are usually the most expensive option of all, but you get what you pay for. The older SD version is currently the only media that allows you to take what you recorded out of the camcorder and view it on almost every DVD player instantly after recording. There is no editing when doing this, so everything comes over - bad takes and all. Be sure to use DVD-R or DVD-RW if you choose this option, and it may be hard to find or afford discs that record more than 30 minutes at a time

* Having said all that, there are a few things you should know. This may affect your decision.
- All current Bu-Ray miniDVD, hard drive, and flash memory save the video to a format called AVCHD and sometimes H.264 or MP4. AVCHD, MP4, and H.264 can record in different compression rates, but you can't always adjust this in your camcorder. You might end up with a highly compressed video that is not as great as the image in your memories.
- Standard Definition miniDVD uses the same compression as regular DVD. You will be recording memories in an older format, but it is guaranteed to work (at a high cost per miniDVD)
- MiniDV uses similar compression to normal DVD, but you must use a deck or the camcorder to play its video to your TV. You may feel tied down, but you can always store and re-use MiniDV a well as use it in the newer HDV camcorders.

If you truly want to go with hard drive or DVD, we highly recommend these models:
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HAF BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive and 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00159JV46?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00159JV46
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HA BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive & 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UWN0VE?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000UWN0VE
- 8GB HDD/DVD Hybrid Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom and 2.7" Wide LCD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8QJV2?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000O8QJV2
- DZHS500A DVD-HDD Hybrid Camcorder Kit, DZHS500AKI, Standard Camcorders http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A38V5C?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001A38V5C
- These are all hybrid camcorders that contain Both a miniDVD system AND a hard drive. The first two models would be our first choice and are High Definition models with Blueray DVD. The second two are the older standard miniDVD systems.
- The best practice for your situation would be to save to hard drive. Once the hard drive fills up, you can dump the video to DVD. After that, you can continue filming. If you are caught in a situation where your hard drive is filled and you need to continue filming, you can pop in DVD after DVD.

* All of current camcorders, regardless of media format, can be hooked to your computer via firewire for capturing video, editing, and publishing to DVD, Ipod, or the internet to share with others.

** Once you go through all this and choose a camcorder, you will also need to consider:
- a couple of large capacity batteries - for filming as long as possible before returning the hotel room
- a camcorder bag - if you do not want to transport your camcorder and accessories in your purse or luggage.
- an external mic system http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006HO3R?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00006HO3R - if you plan to record yourself or a friend while talking from a great distance or on the move
- a telephoto lens or wide angle lens - you will need to know the model number of your camera, mm size of the lens, and if there is threading on your lens for screw on lenses or not. Most HD camcorders come threaded.
- a flexible tripod http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVSLRO?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000EVSLRO - for holding you camera in different places without the need or a large tripod or a friend. many models are available. be sure it will hold the weight of your camera (weight is usually listed on the box and manual with the camera)
- a small cleaning kit with a brush and lens cloth - you can use the same one for digital cameras
- a video light http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CEVP6?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0000CEVP6
- a light bracket for a camcoder that does not have a hot shoe http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NL5X5S?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000NL5X5S

Now that you are armed, shop around. We did not provide a lot of specific answers because there are a multitude of combinations that may work for your needs and tastes. For example, if you want the top of the line Hitachi hybrid camcorder, it is at the $1,000 end of your price range, and you will still have to spend money for the expensive DVDs and other accessories.

One last thing, camcorders don't take photos as well a digital cameras, and the opposite is true. Most digital cameras take excellent photos, but only take VGA video at 640x480 - lower than standard definition resolution. Sellers will often try to confuse you by saying they have a 16 megapixel (mp) camcor

Hey, I'm looking a for a new video camera. I intend to use it for short films, but not professional, just for fun.

However, it should have good quality (doesn't have to be HD)good audio, manual zoom option. I would like it to also have a mic output so I can attach a mic to it.

If possible, I would like it to be able to hold a shotgun mic.

Most importantly, I edit on a mac, so it needs to be compatible.

My max is $350 (for just the camera)

Thanks!

You will need a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer (your MAC has a Ieee1394 port already). To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

These ZR series camcorders have no shoe for to mount anything on top, but I own 3 of them and have never had a problem with mics, mind you if I was using a shotgun Mic, it would be on the end of a boom pole, not attached to the camcorder. You can turn this camcorder on, press record and it will record to the end of the tape or until you press the button to stop it. Put the camcorder on a tripod, you can now be the boom pole person. When you get tired of staying within the limits of your cable, consider going wireless or get a Digital Audio Recorder and record audio separately .

When using a device to capture audio that is not your camcorder, use this tip to be able to SYNC your audio and video together once both are put on a timeline for video editing purposes. Standing close to Microphone, in front of your camcorder, with both recording devices recording the video and audio, CLAP, LOUDLY. Now so long as the recorders stay recording, you have a sync point so when you get back to the computer, it is much easier to sync the audio and video together.

Im starting boarding school for the first time, I have no idea what i'll need. Could you please give your time to write down a list for me of all the things I will need for Boarding School? I know I'll need bedding sheets, laundry bag, but what else?

Answer
Dorm stuff -- a cushy swivel chair, bookcase and refrigerator
Look in places like PBTeens for dorm stuff. Under the bed storage is good, a full-length mirror, shower tote, bath slippers, over the door hook for things like towels, etc. Anything to make your bed softer like a tempurpedic cover.
Check with your dorm master first because your dorm may come with a bookshelf or not allow a refrigerator.
Swifters are popular as are small hand held vacs.
Microwave popcorn, Pop Tarts, flavored water- bought by the case at a Big Box store...
alot of clean underwear

polo shirts/khaki shorts, pants....other preppy clothes in your closet

headphones/stereo/mp3 player

running shoes...even if you dont think youre going to do any sports

photos of your friends/family

read The official preppy handbook by Lisa Birnbach (1980)

pens/pencils/stationary supplies

camera

bike and a lock

cellphone
Febreeze
plastic storage drawers
trash can (my dorm doesn't provide them)
lots of hangers
a seat cushion and extra pillows
paper clips and thumb tacks
chargers for ipod, cellphone, camera battery, etc.
and several refill cartridges for that printer! They always seem to run dry when you are in a hurry to print a paper.
a fan for the start of the school year
a printer

So basically...

Ok I have had the same digital camera for 5 years now it is only 5mp and just plain sucks for pictures. I have 2 small kids, 2 and 4, so they are very busy and i want a camera that can take pictures very fast so i can keep up with them. i think people refer to it as taking sport shots?? i also know i want high mega pixels and a high optical zoom, at least 10 mp and 8 optical zoom.....there are a ton of cameras out there that have my qualifications of the mp and optical zm but i have no idea if they will do the "sport shots" or not....please give me suggestions! Thanks!
just another note also, i can only afford about 200 to 250 bucks, i know i know i am asking a lot...lol

A good snapshot, wide-screen, not so expensive camera?

Cowell

Hi guys,
I'm really bad at knowing recent cameras.

I am looking for a camera with good video and picture quality, but I want it to have the option for WIDESCREEN!
I love face detector and big megapixel with strong zoom.

I play sport which requires that camera to be as anti-blur as possible.

I don't want it to fancy, not that big black camera.

any brand works for me, waterproof isn't necessary.

price range 100-200$

I can reach Walmart, Best-Buy, and Fries.

thanks for your opinion and suggestion!
Much appreciated!

Answer
First, my opinion and that of many others, I can't tell you the number of write ups we see here almost every day about faulty Kodak cameras. Not a good choice at all.

Your best bet will be either Canon or Nikon.

Anti blur - you obviously don't know much about photography or you wouldn't ask this question.

Blur happens in low light when the shutter is too slow. It doesn't matter what kind of camera you have, in this case blur will happen.

You're actually asking for faster aperture and a faster shutter. The control of these comes on high end Point and Shoot and SLR cameras, not the cheap pocket toys.

If you want quality it will be expensive.

How can I keep my audio and video in sync?

waterproof sports camera image
Q. I have a 'Kodak Play sport' waterproof film camera that I have recently been trying to film on. The film quality is brilliant, and the audio quality fairly good, but only on the camera. When I import it onto my computer, the audio and video in both WMP (Windows Media Player) and WMM (Windows Movie Maker).
Any suggestions on how I can:
a) Remove audio lag using WMM.
b) Stop audio lag altogether on my camera.
c) Suggest an alternative free media editing suite to do a) with.
Thanks,
MiJ.

Answer
Clarification: You are "filming". There is no *film* involved. The digital video (and audio) device you are using captures video.

As you indicated during playback, the audio and video are in synch. When the media file is transferred to the computer, the audio and video are not in synch. This symptom (also sometimes referred to as being "glitchy", is *usually* due to the computer for one or more of the following reasons:

* The computer's CPU is underpowered for dealing with the video recorded.
* The media player cannot deal with the video.
* The computer does not have enough RAM.
* The computer does not have enough available hard drive space.
* The computer is doing other work using CPU cycles that the video needs to play properly.

For playback only, try VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/ as it is more robust than WMP. As for editors - in the Windows environment, Sony Vegas usually floats to the top... But not knowing the computer environment makes this a SWAG...

What camera would photographers use while taking photos of bodyboarders/surfers?

Dixeynormo

What specific cameras would they use? What brand/model and what protective cases would be used in order to make it water proof/strong enough against the oceans force

Answer
You want a tele or telezoom lens, the faster the aperture the better.

Something like a 70-200 f2.8 is the classic sports shooters lens, and most of them have the benefit of being internal focus and remaining a constant length as you zoom (an important factor with housings, as often they cannot extend with the lens.

You want a camera with a good fast frame rate and with as many cross type focus sensors as possible, so look at a Nikon D300s or Canon EOS 7D. There are cheaper cameras out there, but they lack the same speed and / or AF sophistication.

Sigma do a good 70-200 f2.8 (the EX DG II) which is far less expensive than the branded Canon or Nikon lenses)

Aquapac do a good flexible waterproof lining, which is good to 5meters depth.

Im not too fussy over picture quality.
I need a camera with a very good battery life, that turns on quickly and can take consecutive pictures one after the other quickly (not multi-flash), and a quick autofocus. I've had problems with past cameras where taking a picture far away(3m) from the subject with flash obscures the subject almost completely so the flash needs to have a good reach. My budget is from $100-$400.
Please put model numbers in your answers.
Thanks so much

Answer
If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense and Live View] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. i like to take pictures of models and sometimes landscapes. i would like a high quality but i just dont know what a great camera would be. i would like something in about the $600 range?
would a Nikon DSLR D40x work? or it that a bad camera?

Answer
If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28.
