1080p dSLR vs. Camcorder?

Mason Youn

I want to be able to shoot video with something that has an interchangeable lens. The Sony Handycam starts at $1,999 and I have ~$500. I want it to be 1080p, be able to change lens (preferably) so I can do fish eye and wide angle etc... while snowboarding, and about $500.
Should I be looking at DLSRs or video cameras? What model/make, anything?

Cheers,
Mason

Answer
Just because the camcorder does not have "interchangeable lenses" does not mean you cannot ADD a lens to the camcorder. Any camcorder with the specification "Lens filter diameter" has a thread mount surrounding the lens which allows adding a screw-mount lens.

For example, the Sony HDR-HC9 and HDR-CX500 have a lens filter diameter spec and you can add tele, wide angle and fisheye lenses to them. And they are about 1/2 the cost of the NEX-VG10.

Since you are planning to do fast action stuff (snowboarding), it would be best if the video storage format was less than what AVCHD compression applies into MTS (or TOD) files.

Your task is to identify the camcorders in the $300-400 range that have the "Lens filter diameter" spec. This is basically the upper end of the consumer entry-level range of camcorders. The reason you are starting at the $300-400 range is beause after you get the camcorder, then you need to buy the add-on lens. If the camcorder has a 30mm lens filter diameter, then search for a fisheye by using "30mm fisheye".

Chances are VERY high you will not find what you are looking for... but at least you know, now, how to look for what is in your budget.

A decent dSLR will be in the same boat... the good ones with interchangeable lens mounts won't allow you any $ for additional lenses. You would be better off getting a stock lens and using your video editor to add the fisheye effect.

Connecting my Polaroid Camcorder Dvg 1080p to a Laptop.?

Jack F

I wanted to know if there is a way to connect my Polaroid to my laptop so that i can preview the on my laptop before i press record on my camcorder.
in shourt i would like to see the information captured frmo my camcorder view on my laptop. Does anyone know how to do this?

Answer
That camcorder has A/V and HDMI outputs. It looks like you can use the A/V line as an external monitor for recording (See the manual, pg 49). You can't use the HDMI link the same way, as the camcorder won't record while the HDMI link is in use.

If your laptop has a video input device (I'm not aware of any laptops with such an input, but USB or expansion card devices such as the dazzle capture do exist), you could use the laptop as a monitor. A small, flat panel TV would be easier to use as this monitor.

There are NO legal laptops with HDMI INputs. You won't find any type of recording device that can take an HDMI input due to the laws enacted about digital copyrights.

I am looking for an HD Camcorder with a 1080p resolution and at least 50x optical zoom, any suggestions please and can you tell me also the price ranges of a camcorder with these specs?
Thanks.
@ Nihal: not more than 650 euro its about 900$

@ Iridflare: Now I have the SONY DCR-SX40 and it has 60x zoom and 720p resolution and I am really enjoying this great zoom but the quality of the video still poor if we compared to a 1080p resolution camera.

@ Dana Bash: the Canon HF S10 is a Good camera but it has only10x O.Z.

@ Andrew: LoL I will think of it.

Well, exluding the 50x optical zoom option, can you tell me what is the 1080p resolution camcorder with the highest optical zoom now on market?
I am thinking of the JVC enverio GZ-HD300 and it has a 20x O.Z .

Answer
Off the top of my head I can't think of any HD camcorders like that. Can you explain why you need at least 50x optical zoom, please? Very high zooms like that are almost unusable - if you've got a specific need, there may be another way to deal with it.
