Is this a good camera i should buy???

Answer
This Kodak camera as well as the Polaroid camera [from another earlier question you submitted] have poor video capability and you may be looking into $200 plus purchases.

Here's a "best buy" camera recommendation with superior video and uses rechargeable AA batteries which last a "long time."

Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. Takes "continuous" 2 frames per second "action/sports" images;
4. Has macro feature for close-ups of small objects focused under 6 inches;
5. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
6. It's very small and light;
7. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards - a 2 gig card sells for $19 at samys.com;
8. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
9. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
10. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
11. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Review(s) can be found at www.amazon.com [Query: "Nikon Coolpix L10" along with pictures provided by satisfied purchasers.]

Good luck!

What's a good camera for a 12 year old?

The Crazy

Okay well it's christmastime and I'd really like a digital camera or so. I'm a girl in love with gadgets and electronics, but I don't need anything really flashy and it doesn't have to be PINK. My brother's getting it for me, and I don't want to burn his pockets. It doesn't have to be expensive, I'm only 12 you know. I WOULD like the pics to come out a little nicely, outdoor or indoor. I had the Oregon Scientific DS6618 and it was okay. Slim and slender, it was small and portable. Anyone have any ideas on which camera to buy?

Answer
I just bought a Kodak Easyshare 7.1 MP camera at Radioshack, but they also sell them at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Office Max and Office Depot. The 6.1 MP is cheaper, so that would probably be best. I love my camera, it has so many awesome features, and it is extremely easy to use (so easy, you don't even need the manual they include). I paid $130 for mine, which is an excellent price for something of this quality, and the best part is it comes with a charger! No matter what camera you buy, make sure it runs on a RECHARGEABLE batter, because buying disposables is gonna cost you more in the long run. I just can't get over how awesome this camera is! It's really tiny, and you can also record video (but they come out in quicktime format, however, you can easily convert it). The pics come out crystal clear, and 7 megapixels means HUGE PICS! There are black/white & sepia filters, and also several different modes for taking pictures. I used the sport mode while I was riding on the train, and the pictures still came out absolutely perfect! I had a hard time finding it in the store, everywhere I called was nearly sold out! I understand why though, this is an awesome camera~!

whats a good hd video camera?

Benjamin

i dont want something expensive, but i want something that makes real good quality videos, and so the footage doesnt look like crappy "home footage".
i want to shoot short films with special fx.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

What video-camera to choose?

NICK

I want a camera with good quality to make videos under 200 euro
i am now between:
Sony HDR-CX200
Toshiba Camileo X400
whats better to choose

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Whats the Best HD quality Video camera that I can buy right now at a decent price...?

Landon

I just got back from my daughters gymnastic competition. We had borrowed the in-laws video camera to record it.( a sony DC-RHC20 ) The quality is awful... And my software on my computer wont recognize the camera. I want something thats going to give me HD quality, without the hassell of buying mini DV's to record on.. Memory stick's will be just fine or even DVD's may be ok.. But I want the HD quality.. Please help before the next gym meet !!!!!!!!

Answer
If you camcorder can't recognize the DCR-HC20 with a firewire cable (USB won't work), then chances are REALLY good your computer will not be able to deal with the very highly compressed AVCHD/MTS files that flash memory (and hard disc drive camcords use fo consumer-grade high definition.

If you think the indoor video captured was bad in the HC20, he indoor video captured by any other consumer grade camcorder will be similar - if you don't know how to use the manual controls and the white balance...

Consumer grade camcorders are not what are used by the professionals. So if that is what you are expecting in he way of video quality, then you need to reset your expectations. More lighting, bigger lenses and larger imaging chips to less compression (read: miniDV tape) is required. Consumer-grade compression merely worsens the video quality because during the compression process, there is too much discarded video data.

The good video quality in poor lighting comes from camcorders like the Sony HVR-Z5U, Canon XHA1 and Panasonic AG-HVX200. Not consumer camcorders with small lenses and imaging chips...

Yes, I have successfully captured indoor high school gymnastics to high definition video... with my Sony HDR-FX1 and HDR-HC1. And others have complained that their video (captured by consumer-grade cams) was poor - at the same event - so they wanted copies of mine.

What did you get for Christmas?

Sienna

Question regarding a Sony Dvcam DSR-PD150P video camera?

SelfConfes

I was just wondering how much they are worth these days? Looks to be in pretty good condition - came with battery and cords etc etc I would also appreciate any information about them such as if they are still commonly used, or if they are now more collectors items?

Any help would be much appreciated thanks :)

Answer
that is the professional version of Sony's DCR VX2000 series. they are still used by action sports enthusiasts. originally they were intended for the broadcast news market and professional videographers so it is a good quality camera. miniDV is better for motion analysis and sports because it has very little compression compared to file based codecs. The American version of the camera sells for about $500 USD.

would the Flip MinoHD 120-Minute be good to record sports?

Logen

I'm a hurdler and i want people to record my track races and i was wondering if this would be a good camera to video tape with.

Answer
no, not if you intend to slow down the video for precise motion analysis. no HD format works for that because they all use Group of Frames architecture. AVCHD for example uses a frame rate of 4 fps for recording, and then on playback it interpolates to reproduce the missing frames. A lot can happen in a 1/4 second that will be entirely missed or falsely interpolated on playback. A better choice would be miniDV. DV takes 60 fields per second, each field is a unique full picture and you can move frame to frame with no missing motion details.

what is a good cheap camcorder? (under $150 )?

blackhole

I would like to find one that is inexpensive that I can take to camp with me

Answer
Use a cheaper camcorder to learn with. MiniDVs are the best. Stay away from SVHS, DVD, and Digital8. If you're buying your first camcorder, but you don't have much money then buy the Canon ZR500:

I need a camcorder that has a shoe mount on top but also a mic-in jack. I want a smaller camera though (like a handycam). Not looking for anything too expensive though. I'm looking on ebay but I'm not sure what to look for. My budget is about 150 for a used item.

I have a Canon Elura 100 camcorder, which memory card should I buy?

Here's an explanation of the differences between mmc and sd memory cards:

since your camcorder can use either type - I suggest to go with the one that'll give you the most memory (MB) for the cost ($$).

What's a good small HD video camera?

Price range under $600.

Answer
Get the Kodak PlaySport Zx3, it's a Consumer Reports recommended choice. Good quality pic and easy on the checking account.

The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.

Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.

Lows
Fair audio quality and battery life.

How do you get the video to work on a Sony Bloggie Sport Camera?

Christophe

The recording ability doesn't work anymore and I've only had it for a week. It doesn't do anything when I hit record, but the regular pictures work fine.

Answer
Hi Christopher, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Many flash-memory HD cameras won't let you start a new video recording unless a certain amount of free-memory is available (they also won't record video if a too-small SD card is inserted). Photos don't require the same large amounts of empty storage, so even though the SD card may not be completely full, you can still take stills but not video.

Off-load all your content onto a computer for safe storage, then use the camera's menu to erase some (or all) the video files (don't use your computer to do this!) and see if video recording is restored.

Otherwise, call or email Sony Support since your Bloggie is still in warranty.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

I want to be able to shoot video with something that has an interchangeable lens. The Sony Handycam starts at $1,999 and I have ~$500. I want it to be 1080p, be able to change lens (preferably) so I can do fish eye and wide angle etc... while snowboarding, and about $500.
Should I be looking at DLSRs or video cameras? What model/make, anything?

Cheers,
Mason

Answer
Just because the camcorder does not have "interchangeable lenses" does not mean you cannot ADD a lens to the camcorder. Any camcorder with the specification "Lens filter diameter" has a thread mount surrounding the lens which allows adding a screw-mount lens.

For example, the Sony HDR-HC9 and HDR-CX500 have a lens filter diameter spec and you can add tele, wide angle and fisheye lenses to them. And they are about 1/2 the cost of the NEX-VG10.

Since you are planning to do fast action stuff (snowboarding), it would be best if the video storage format was less than what AVCHD compression applies into MTS (or TOD) files.

Your task is to identify the camcorders in the $300-400 range that have the "Lens filter diameter" spec. This is basically the upper end of the consumer entry-level range of camcorders. The reason you are starting at the $300-400 range is beause after you get the camcorder, then you need to buy the add-on lens. If the camcorder has a 30mm lens filter diameter, then search for a fisheye by using "30mm fisheye".

Chances are VERY high you will not find what you are looking for... but at least you know, now, how to look for what is in your budget.

A decent dSLR will be in the same boat... the good ones with interchangeable lens mounts won't allow you any $ for additional lenses. You would be better off getting a stock lens and using your video editor to add the fisheye effect.

Connecting my Polaroid Camcorder Dvg 1080p to a Laptop.?

Jack F

I wanted to know if there is a way to connect my Polaroid to my laptop so that i can preview the on my laptop before i press record on my camcorder.
in shourt i would like to see the information captured frmo my camcorder view on my laptop. Does anyone know how to do this?

Answer
That camcorder has A/V and HDMI outputs. It looks like you can use the A/V line as an external monitor for recording (See the manual, pg 49). You can't use the HDMI link the same way, as the camcorder won't record while the HDMI link is in use.

If your laptop has a video input device (I'm not aware of any laptops with such an input, but USB or expansion card devices such as the dazzle capture do exist), you could use the laptop as a monitor. A small, flat panel TV would be easier to use as this monitor.

There are NO legal laptops with HDMI INputs. You won't find any type of recording device that can take an HDMI input due to the laws enacted about digital copyrights.

Canon HG10 HD HDD Camcorder, good zoom?

noonemourn

I am looking at getting the Canon HG10 Camcorder in order to film some amateur theatre productions with my college.

Will the 10x optical zoom on this camera be enough to film from the back of a medium sized theatre and still maintain picture quality to the highest standard?

I want a Hard Drive camera for sure and also an old fashioned viewfinder.

Here is the spec on the Canon HG10, and information or suggestions for different cameras is greatly appreciated:

http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/camcorders/high_definition_hd/HG10/index.asp?specs=1

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
yes it has good zoom

why expensive camcorder have less optical zoom?

debabratap

Answer
High end camcorders usually have replaceable lenses, just like an SLR camera has replaceable lenses. The lenses that the include typically prefer quality over zoom length. They are made of better glass, and result in better color clarity and quality. Also, less expensive camcorders typically have a very short focal length, with little to no control over manual focus. These features are very important on higher end camcorders. Anyhow, I find that people rely on zoom lenses way to much, and rarely find a long zoom necessary.

What is a cheap good video camera?

Holly

I need a nice quality camera but I am on a pretty big budget. It needs to shoot video obviously, but if it did pictures too I wouldn't complain. I've heard the Cannon 300 hs was good but it is out of my budget. My budget it basically not past 200$ but anything around 150-100$ would be perfect (but I totally doubt that)
GAH!! I forgot it needs pretty good sound quality.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders.

What's the cheapest HD video camera you can get?

Jahood

I've had a look at both the Canon Rebel T2i and the Sony HDR FX-1, but both were out of my price range. I'd like a video camera with similar quality and features but alot cheaper.

So, what's the cheapest HD video camera that you can get that approves my above requirements?

Thanks! :D

Looking for a mini dv 3ccd camcorder with firewire?

dltpbkguit

I haven't found one that's in my price range yet. I don't care if it's used or whatever, I just want the lowet price one that can be found.

Answer
3CCD? Not many out there new.

Off the top of my head, the Panasonic PV-GS320 would be the least expensive. At the consumer level, Panasonic made the most noise about the 3CCD thing.

Next would be the Canon GL2... then there's the Sony HDR-FX1 or FX1000...

All miniDV tape based camcorders (with the exception of a few fairly old JVCs) have a DV port (4-pin firewire).

Difference between 3CCD and HD Camcorders?

EHLF

I was wondering what the difference between a 3CCD and an HD camcorder is. Also, which would be better for use of filming skateboarding and snowboarding?

Answer
A CCD is an imaging chip - Charge-Coupled Device - like the retina in your eye. The imaging chip is what turns light into the signal that ultimately gets written to the camcorder's storage media. Some camcorders use a 3-CCD array to "see" each color (RGB) individually, then blend them. The theory is that images using this technique are an improvement over a single chip handling all three colors. CMOS is another type of imaging chip.

If by "HD" you are referring to High Definition, this is unrelated to the imaging chip type, so there is no "difference". High definition camcorders (whether HDV or AVCHD) use internal electronics to capture more data than standard definition. A camcorder can have a single CCD or CMOS imaging chip or 3CCD or 3CMOS array and be a standard definition camcorder. As well, a camcorder can have a Single CCD or CMOS imaging chip or 3CCD or 3CMOS array and be a high definition camcorder... For example, the Sony HDR-HC1, HC3, HC5, HC7 and HC9 are single CMOS, high definition camcorders. They can also shoot in standard definition. The Panasonic PV-GS320 is a 3CCD camcorder, but can only shoot in standard definition. The Sony HDR-FX1 is a 3CCD camcorder that can shoot in HDV and DV. The Sony HDR-FX1000 is a 3CMOS camcorder that can shoot in HDV or DV.

Filming skateboarding and snowboarding is no different that any other sport video capture. You need the largest lenses and imaging chips you can afford in a camcorder. In both cases, it seems common to use a fish-eye (extremely wide angle) lense so it is best to get a camera that has mounting threads to add lenses. All camcorders can do well under good lighting conditions. For high speed action, progressive frame works best - though most consumer camcorders use interlaced frame capture. I have found that increasing the camcorder's shutter speed (1/250 or 1/500 or more) helps get clearer video, but this works only under good lighting conditions. When the shutter speed is increased, less light gets to the imaging chips - so you need to open the aperture more... Doing this under not-so good lighting conditions will result in poor, grainy, captured video.

Snowboarding has it's own share of issues because of the cold - electronics, optics and batteries don't like cold very much - look at the camcorder's environmental operating range to be sure you are using your equiment in an appropriate environment. Condensation can easily occur when moving from warm to cold or cold to warm, and camcorders can stop working because of this. Once the condensation is gone, it *may* operate OK...

To answer your questions directly, there is no way to "compare" 3CCD and HD Camcorders.

What is the best durable video camera for sports under 500$?

Jason

I ski, play lacrosse, skateboard, and mountain bike. I already own a gopro and that is great for first person but I need something that someone else can use to film me. Price isn't really that much of an issue but i don't want to drop 1000 bucks on something that will likely get damaged while filming.

Answer
HD Camcorders, that being any Camcorder that does not use MiniDV tape for Video Storage and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video.

I need help choosing camcorder for ghost hunting?

numbuh 1

So I want to ghost hunt and i really need is a camcorder but I dont know which is better for it.
Because I heard full spectrum u cant see with it and IR i basically dont really know what that is.
So like the show "Ghost Adventures" how do they get that green and how come they can see through their cameras screen?
Also like i just want a camcorder thats how do you say it like i want to see out of the screen so i dont walk into stuff but i also would like good quality camcorder.
Also can camcorders have those fluffy mics that are long like on ghost adventures?
So pretty much my question is
Which camcorder is the best for ghost hunting please give a link to it like on amazon.
Look I just dont want to make a bad purchase for a camcorder I dont know about.
Please just help and give a link a a good camcorder on amazon or ghosthunting website.

Answer
They are using night vision cameras that's why the video appears green. I have no idea about what camera you should buy but I would suggest spending as little as possible. You need to take these shows not with a grain of salt but a bucket, why? Every single paranormal show that produce video of a ghost or whatever, the quality is very poor. A low end cell phone can produce a better image or video so why are theirs so distorted? I'm not implying ghost are not real, I'm simply trying to convey to you to use common sense, my two cents

Is the JVC Everio a good ghost hunting camcorder?

Joey

Answer
That depends.

Are you looking to point the camera at biker with a headlight, then claim it's a ghost? If so, it should be good for that because doesn't perform well in low light when you'd be doing your "hunting".

On the other hand if you're looking to film legit ghosts, I'd look for something with a little bit better low light performance.

Happy hunting!

Help! Questions about old time camcorders vs. digital camcorders?

Daisy Mae

We have a camcorder that we've used for about 9 years or so. We soley use it for taping vacations & holidays. It tapes on those small cartridges & then you can tape them to either VHS tapes or you can get then put on DVD. I want to get a small digital camcorder, like this one which will be on sale at Target:

http://www.polaroid.com/product/0/266896/DVF-130/_/DVF-130%3A_USB_Camcorder

Here are my questions: I take it these tiny digital camcorders use the same kind of little memory chips that digital cameras use; so then how do I get the film onto a DVD, or a VHS? And will the quality be comparable to the old dinosaur camcorder I use now?

(I am not a 'technical' person so plain English please!) Thanks for all your help

Answer
Here it is in a better color.http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-DVF-130TC-Camcorder-2-0-inch-Titanium/dp/B002JIN1HK since it hasn't been released there are no reviews. It has64 mb internal memory that will take a few minutes of video but you can add an sd memory card and I'd get an 8G. It's brand new so no one knows if it takes good videos.
I'm not sure what kind of software it comes with for downloading and editing. It's a cheap little camcorder, I hope it's not crap.

DVD Camcorders & HDD Camcorders Problems?

rachy_rach

I currently own a dvd camcorder (upgraded from miniDV tapes). I will admit i have been slightly disappointed with the DVD one, i think thats because the miniDV one was top of the range whereas this DVD Sony camcorder wasn't. So i've been looking at this Sony HDR-XR520VE which is HDD. I'm just concerned as people have said it won't work at high altitude and during loud noises??

Are DVD camcorders supposed to have high altitude problems? I only ask this as i used mine on a plane and it worked fine...Would the HDD work on a plane?? Would it work during a fireworks display for instance as this is loud noises?

Answer
Lare is correct on most points - but you need to be aware that when you went from miniDV tape recording DV format video - which is the least compressed consumer digital video format - to a consumer DVD based VOB which are the MOST compressed, you did not upgrade. You might have a newer camcorder because the DVD camcorder purchase was more recent, but that does not mean upgrade - in the video environment, the least compressed video will generally provide the best available video quality - when the camcorders are similarly priced and are recording the same thing. I would much prefer to drive a 4 year old Cadillac CTS than a brand new Aveo...

Because consumer DVD camcorders barely make useful doorstops, the don't make the short list.

Neither flash memory nor miniDV tape have the high altitude or high - and prolonged - vibration issues that HDD camcorders have. In high altitude, read the manual (generally 9,800 feet or higher), there is not enough air pressure (or available air) for the hard drive heads to "fly" over the hard drive platters. If you are standing at the top of a tall mountain (over 9,800 feet), it is likely the camcorder will not record. That is why that warning is put in the manual. Flash memory and miniDV tape based camcorder do not have this warning. (Neither do DVD camcorders). They do not rely on available air pressure to ensure a system works. Yes, in a passenger airplane - which is in a pressurized cabin, a HDD camcorder will work just fine... there is enough air pressure for the hard disc drive to operate.

In the case of vibration, it is generally prolonged vibration that is the culprit. Fireworks are not typically prolonged, but short bursts. When audio and video comes into a HDD camcorder, the first place it goes is into a temporary storage buffer. If all is well, then the data is shoved to the heads and written to the platters. If there is enough vibration and the heads park, if that vibration lasts more than a couple of seconds, the buffer will fill, the heads won't write the data to the hard drive and the error message "buffer overflow" will appear and nothing will be recorded. To eliminate this, remove the camcorder from the vibration. This is in the manual - but not in the manuals of flash memory or miniDV tape camcorders. The source of the vibration can be really loud music (whether amplified or not), really loud crowds (at big sporting events); really loud engines - race cars, airplane engines, etc.

The Sony HDR-XR520VE is one of the the replacements to the HDR-SR series. It records high definition video to very highly compressed AVCHD (MTS) video files. Presuming your earlier miniDV tape and DVD based camcorders were standard definition camcorders, you will see a big improvement in video quality because high definition video has a lot more data than standard definition video...

I never know where I will be for capturing video. I have recorded bands in places I never thought I would be - and I have recorded bands I never though I would record. I have been to the tops of mountains I never planned to be on. I have captured loud race car engines - and I am not a race car fan. Since I never know where I will be and what I might want to record, it made sense to me to limit the *known* problems associated with certain recording media. During my selection process, one of the other things I looked at is what the professionals use.

For the most part, they use camcorders from the Sony HVR series, Panasonic AG-DVX and AG-HDX series, Canon XH and XLH series and JVC GY series. Bigger lenses and imaging chips provide for better low-light behavior; but what got my attention is the format they record... DV and HDV. No anemic consumer AVCHD and no VOB. In the event a hard drive is used, it is more typically an external hard drive (like the FireStore) or even using flash memory (expensive P2 cards from Panasonic) - but very typically DV and HDV. In the consumer camcorder environment, DV and HDV is miniDV tape. Cheapest $ per gig storage and archiving; no extra step for archiving; least amount of digital video compression... In the consumer space for high definition camcorders, that means the Canon HV30/HV40 or Sony HDR-HC9... If you must go tapeless, then consider flash memory (like the Canon HF series or the Sony HDR-CX series), but I would not bother with HDD or DVD based camcorders.

My camcorders are miniDV tape based. A Canon and two Sonys.
