i say mac becuz windows is a peice of shit that will crah every 5 minutes

Answer
With Bootcamp software from Apple. Windows XP can also be installed on macs but who wants it ???? Always Mac OS X is the best and if you want windows to reach this stage? Wait till year 2012

I'm long time mac user since 1984. And i have seen windows 95 a new OS coming up in year 1995.I have been using both OSs since then till Mac OS X 10.4 and XP professional.
Mac OS X was introduced in early around June 2001 and XP was introduced in around Nov 2001. Windows is just like an empty plate for yourself to serve and eat(ie get the third party). But Macs are packed with great features and software which you won't even get from the windows third party. Finally why is the Mac user base in the world very small ? Its just same as asking why Ferrari's Market share is less. They are expensive but worth to have.

Macs are designed for students, email & internet users, professionals users.
Apple products hardware & software are designed in such a way that all the complex tasks are done with simplicity and real ease. Looks great and cool.

Eg- iPods. On a iPod you know how easy is it to select a song you want from a collection of 10000 songs library. With just a few clicks on you iPod.Right..! Try that on any other MP3 player in market today.
Thats because the well designed hardware and software and most importantly well integration of the iTunes and iPod. But along with the easy use iPods look beautiful and cool.

Macs are similar. most easy to use, great user experience, great features.

FOR STUDENTS AND GENERAL COMPUTER USERS -
Easy to use with few Examples:-

Drag and drop-
Installation and uninstallation of applications. Just drag the application you want to install from the installation CD and drop in the Application folder and thats it, Installation done. In some cases we need to do installations in conventional way(like windows) but most of the times its drag and drop. For un-installation its just drag the application to the trash and empty it. un-installtion done. Very simple for general users. Same with moving folders and files.

True Plug and play- Of course now XP is also capable of it. But not 98,ME,2000.
With Macs plug and play works really smooth since Mac OS 8 days

Features:- Ok! the hardware looks cool so what about software the brain of the computer. Microsoft is following Apple for years. You will see these Mac feature in the next years release of Microsoft's next generation OS Vista.

Mac OS X- http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/...
Heart of the Mac with a smart way to do the tasks.
Cool looks and feel and really easy to use OS with Drag & Drop,
Aqua look, and really a great user experience.

Dashboard - instantly access to small apps like calculator, stock charts, weather,
clocks, telephone directory... Its really cool..

Spotlight- Instantly searches with lightening speed.

iChat A/V - Coolest experience for Instant messaging and video
conference with isight.

Automator - repeated tasks like renaming the file names is done
in a matter of few secs.

Mail Client - free with OS really cool features like slide show
of the image which come on your emails

Quicktime - Support for HD videos to mobile phone format 3G format. Great to have
mpeg -4 support in Quick time.

I dont have a video camera yet so could you give me advice on the best one at a reasonable price.

second what are some things I should film
could it be just people waving at the camera?
or film some sports games?
give some other things that would be cool.

Answer
I got a Canon DC310 for about $300
it has some good features and a few effects on it.
you can't beat it for the money

Just film the things you want to remember about the year
If you film a game I would stick to the teams coming onto the field, the coin toss, some good plays and the final score maybe a little celebration. of course you edit that later. maybe friends goofing off, introduce them all . ..make it like a documentary (but don't tell people it's a doc. cause it makes them act weird. film homecoming, dances, teachers you like, talent shows, etc etc

What is the best durable video camera for sports under 500$?

Jason

I ski, play lacrosse, skateboard, and mountain bike. I already own a gopro and that is great for first person but I need something that someone else can use to film me. Price isn't really that much of an issue but i don't want to drop 1000 bucks on something that will likely get damaged while filming.

Answer
HD Camcorders, that being any Camcorder that does not use MiniDV tape for Video Storage and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Is there any way to transfer video from a samsung sc-d382 min dv camcorder to my iMac without using iMovie 09?

best camcorder with imovie image

I have a firewire 400 cable with a 400 to 800 adapter. My iMac is the 27in. version. I can record to iMovie 09 using the camcorder and firewire cable, but cannot send video from the camcorder to iMovie 09. Can I use a video coverter, Quicktime Pro, or other built-in app?

Answer
When you are moving DV-format video from the miniDV camcorder to the computer, the computer Imports - or Captures - the video. DV format video is compressed and the camcorder's processor does the decompression and the video is saved to the iMovie (MOV) file format.

You are correct, the miniDV tape based camcorder does not "send" the DV format video to the computer - the computer takes the video from the camcorder.

QuickTime Pro won't do what you want, either.

Final Cut (Express or Pro) will behave the same way iMovie does...

I am not aware of any application that will just stream the DV-format video data (no importing, no decompression) straight from the camcorder to the computer. This is not platform-spacific - the same is the case for Windows video editing for miniDV tape based camcorders, too. Importing is a real-time activity when working with miniDV tape.

The only way I know of to do what I *think* you need in order to do what you want is to record the DV format video straight to a specialized external hard drive - Focus Enhancements makes the FireStore series. This way, the DV forrmat video data is written directly to the FireStore drive when you connect the camcorder to the FireStore with a firewire cable. When video aquisition is complete, power everything down, connect the FireStore external drive to the iMac, power up, and work with the DV format files... Sony has a external video storage unit, too - but I don't know if it will work with your Samsung miniDV camcorder. These specialized external storage devices are not inexpensive...

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

why are my iMovie film clips out of sequence?

Matt

when I import video from my sony handycam digital disk camcorder into imovie, the film clips are always out of sequence. for example, when recording a basketball game, I get the clips showing up in imovie out of sequence from the actual game. is there something I can do to correct that?

Answer
Maybe you don't have the right codecs installed.

best camcorder reviews 2012 image

Mari

Hello!

I'm looking to purchase my first camcorder. I want to be a film maker, and as I prepare this summer to go to university I want to work on mini projects, youtube videos, etc.

I've narrowed it down I think to two cameras,
The Sony HDR-CX260V High Definition Handycam 8.9 MP Camcorder with 30x Optical Zoom and 16 GB Embedded Memory (Black) (2012 Model) (quite expensive)

Or the Sony HDR-CX220/B High Definition Handycam Camcorder with 2.7-Inch LCD (Black)

good reviews for both, but there's a 200 price difference. Is the 2012 model really worth the extra bucks?

all help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Mari

(if you disagree and have a different recommendation please let me know:)

Answer
I suggest you look for the largest lens diameter and imaging chip you can afford. A mic jack is useful - especially for video low audio where you need to connect an external mic.

But BEFORE you buy, be sure your budget includes a video light, tripod or other steadying device, at least one external mic (you'll want more, later) and perhaps a high capacity rechargeable battery from the camcorder manufacturer.

Lens diameter:
HDR-CX260: unknown.
HDR-CX220: unknown.
This tells me that the lens diameter is likely around 30mm. This is quite small. Low light behavior will not be so good - the lens is not large enough to let much light in to the imaging chip. That there is no lens diameter measurement also tell me that there are no mounting threads, so adding lenses to either of these is impossible.

Imaging chip:
HDR-CX260: 1/3.91 inch
HDR-CX220: unknown
The HDR-CX260's nearly 1/4 inch imaging chip is OK - but not great. With such little light coming in through the small lens and small imaging chip, the low light behavior will not be so good - it is not large enough to make up for the small lens diameter.

In either case, you will need to add more light - so whatever money you saved will be spent on lighting.

Mic jack:
HDR-CX260: yes
HDR-CX220: no
Winner: CX260.

The $250 CX220 is basically an entry level camcorder with few features and capabilities. The CX260 is marginally better - especially with the mic jack - that's huge. If what you're saying is the CX260 is $450, take a look at the Canon HF M500. It is a little more than the CX260, but in addition to the mic jack, you get a 43mm lens diameter (and the ability to add screw-mount lenses), a much larger 1/3 inch imaging chip and manual audio gain control (download and read through the manuals from each of the camcorders - they are available form the manufacturer's web site).

The very compressed AVCHD video capture is the same for all three (though the Canon has more options)...

The Canon HF M300 is worth a look if you can find it. Older model, but 37mm lens filter diameter and 1/4 inch imaging chip + mic jack + manual audio control. Less than the HF M500 (for obvious reasons) but still better low light capabilities than the Sonys you listed.

I am not a Canon bigot - I use Sony prosumer and pro grade camcorders, but at the low end consumer level, Sony is just not doing "it"...

Which camcorder is better canon or Sony?

KB

I want to buy a HD camcorder for home use. I found canon HF R20 in a store near me on sale for 282$, online price is around 400$, but it's an older model which is discontinued by canon and some stores still have it. I also found Sony HDRCX 190 which is around 270-300$. When I read their description they look the same to me. Is the difference in price because canon is a better brand? Is canon for 282$ a steal or is better to go with a newer Sony?

Answer
Hi Ms.Z:

I don't know where online you've been looking, but almost everywhere I've looked, the Canon HF-R20 is selling around that same $280 price (Canon USA currently sells it on its website for $349).

[They also sell the HF20 factory-refurbished in either Silver, Black, or Red for $249 at Canon Direct: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_302514_-1 ].

Walmart & Target currently sell the Sony CX190 for $269.

I own both Sony & Canon camcorders, and both are very good brands. (Sony makes more models that are used by TV stations & networks than Canon, but Canon makes more pro-TV lenses.)

Personally, I don't think either one is that great, although you get 8Gb of internal memory with the Canon model (none in the Sony) and the Canon will hold 2 SD cards at the same time (just one with the Sony). The Sony has a longer optical zoom-factor (25x compared to Canon's 20x). But you should read a couple of reviews for each model and make your own decision:

CNet Review (May 2012) for the Sony CX190: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/sony-handycam-hdr-cx190/4505-6500_7-35128679.html (They didn't like the image quality, for the money. And they thought it felt "flimsy".)

CNet review {January 2011) for the Canon HF20: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-vixia-hf-r20/4505-6500_7-34468433.html

hope this helps,

best camcorder to buy image

Hello I am looking for a panasonic hd camcorder to buy as my previous camcorder somehow wont work anymore. I want it to be a Panasonic hd camcorder as I have heard that those are the best on the market today and for a very fair price.

I am willing to pay up to 500$ for this Panasonic hd camcorder.

So what Panasonic hd camcorder should I buy and why should I buy exactly the Panasonic hd camcorder that you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hello Maria, you should definately go for the Panasonic HDC-SD60K. This Panasonic hd camcorder is nothing but fantastic! It has so many great features and cool functions, basically everything you need in a camcorder and even more.

The battery last much longer than described and it takes amazing pictures. I cant remember the link, but search for the name and then you will find it.

************************************

I found the link, I guess I should have waited because it is actually half the price that I bought it from, which sucks for me, but I guess not for you :)
The link is below.

What is a good inexpensive camcorder for independent filmmakers?

Sandy R

I'm looking for a camcorder to buy, something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel to it. I will also need a tripod so it won't be shakey and all that but could you just tell me some good inexpensive camcorders that will give me what i'm looking for. I don't know much about camcorders and lenses but i'm looking into it. If anyone can help me with brands and prices of camcorders to look into I will be very thankful.

-M

Answer
By "something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel," I think your talking about the film-look. It can be replicated, through either software or in-camera. However, both these options are pretty expensive, and it doesn't sound like you have that much money right now. I'll get to that later, but for now I'm going to talk about cameras.

I dont know your budget, but from what you said, Im guessing you want a camera probably $800 or below (correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll re write this). In that price range, I cant recommend any particular camera, but follow these rules and you should have a pretty good beginner filmmaking camera:

1. Get miniDV- pretty obvious isn't it?
2. Look for a lot of manual functions- every cam has auto functions, but look for the ability to switch to manual focus, iris, shutter, etc.
3. 3ccds are better than 1
4. The newest isnt always the greatest- not really a rule but basically dont go and get the newest thing that just came out

Other plusses are mic ports, headphone ports, hot shoes, and optical image stabilizer.

If you get a tripod, get one with a fluid head. I'm not recommending a particular one, but look around on google. To tell you the truth, Im not exactly a pro on tripods. But a useful trick that you can do with your tripod is screw on your camera, and instead of opening up the legs, hold the legs together and walk with it. If you do it right, the tripod will absorb the shake from your hands giving you a very cheap steadicam effect.

I hope this helped, and I'm a filmmaker as well, and I always like meeting other filmmakers so feel free to contact me at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com

What is the best semi profesional video camera?

good hd video camera for sports
on Good Adjustable Chest Mount Harness for GoPro HD Hero 2 3 Sports ...
good hd video camera for sports image

Caleb

I am looking for a semi professional video camera that shoots 1080p HD. The two things it needs to have a mic input and either a built in memory or a SD card slot (preferably a SD card slot but not necessary). I would like it to be able to take both 30 fps and 60 (it would be nice but not necessary). I don't have a opinion as to what brand but it needs to be around the $1000 or less range.

Answer
semi professional, its a lot of perception, like is the glass half full or half empty. if a camera is not professional, then it is consumer grade, period. If you want to think that a consumer camera is "just like" a pro camera but costs less then that is your perception. but for a reality check, remember that's not true.

the first point is no professional camcorder uses SD cards for media. Those are ok for still shots, but they require super compression of video by a codec that does not hold up to professional use. And professional videographers shoot for the purpose of making money, not "prestige". They need to usually provide a client with a DVD of the finished work. The only consumer HD format that can make decent DVDs is the miniDV based HDV type which is not SD card or under $1000. When Sony invented AVCHD, it was never intended for pro use, but for people to show off home movies directly from the camera without editing. Same can be said for H.264 which is a public variant of Sony proprietary AVCHD. Having a mic input does not magically result in HiFi sound if the memory card based camcorder compresses the bejeebers out of the audio, and all do. Speaking of editing, AVCHD and H.264 have no support for timecode.

for the purpose of making DVDs, whether wedding/event, music video or action sport genres, the weapon of choice is miniDV. You can still get a consumer miniDV camera, the Canon ZR960 has a retail price way under $1000. It shoots in 16:9 so once it is on DVD, it will look better than any consumer SD card based HD camera.

What video camera should I buy to record YouTube videos?

I already own a camcorder and i want a better one with higher quality video. So i just wanted to know what makes a camcorder have sharper/clearer video.

Answer
Generally, the higher the numbers of the resolution makes a higher quality image (so, for example while shooting in HD 1920x1080 is better than 1440x1080)

Also, the more frames per second, the better looking the end result is going to be (so 60fps is better than 30fps)

Hack mobile phone camera digital zoom?

Gedas

My mobile phone Samsung Gt5230 has only 2x digital zoom. Is possible to hack firmware to make 8x or 16x zoom? Maybe it is also possible to change camcorder resolution from qvga to vga, enable nighshot?

Answer
I think if you understood what digital zoom really is you would see why even if you were to be able to increase the digital zoom, the quality would be reduced. All digital zoom is, is cropping the amount of the sensor is being used. You are better off cropping the image later using a photo program.

Same with the camcorder issue. The sensor is tiny, so increasing resolution is impossible with or without any hack.

The "nightshot" you mention would have to be something that would increase the sensors ISO. Again with such a tiny sensor, increasing the ISO will only increase the noise in your photos.

The files I have shot using a Panasonic 3CCD camcorder are huge! Is there anyway to shoot them in lo res/def or shrink the files?

Answer
gonna need that model number...

But if this is a camera with a hard drive, it is probably not possible to change them on the camera. After they are exported to the computer, sure. You can compress them all day.

If it is a newer camera, shooting in HD could create big files, yes. Not always. If it uses AVCHD, then it can actually compress the files smaller than SD! But when they are "uncompressed" for use in some editing systems, they can balloon up pretty huge.

But in general, you can fit a lot more SD footage on the camera than HD. And you should be able to set the camera to record in one mode or the other...

how can i get the best possible Quality out of my panasonic pv-gs120 3ccd camcorder?

Cherlique

I have panasonic pv-gs120 3ccd camcorder. can anyone help with some advice (settings) on how to get the best quality out of this camcorder? also is there any way to make the footage look like hd?

Answer
The Panasonic PV-GS120 records in standard definition on miniDV tapes. There is no setting to make it better quality. When your videos are authored to DVD disks (as MPEG-2) it will be the same quality as you see when you rent or buy a commercially produced movie on DVD.

As far s making your videos look like HD, you can't but you can make your videos look more appeasing by doing the following: Plan your projects first, use a tripod, use ample lighting, have your talent speak clearly and loud enough (use external mic), do creative editing, add background music, etc., etc.

Cassy

I'm looking to buy a new Canon camera for mostly video for extreme sports. I'm torn between the 7D and 70D.

It's about $250 difference in price, but I can't find enough differences between the two other than the touch screen and very small differences.

Which do you think I should get?

Answer
The 70D has a better autofocus system, which may help with the sporting image-chasing.

i need a good qualtiy video camera to take sport demos on!?

what is a good quality video camera/camcorder that takes good quality sport demos and doesn't cost a whole lot of money.

what would be ur sujestions.

i'm looking to shoot skateboarding, bikking, motocross, hockey and extreme ice skating demos.

any help?

Answer
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

I am going to vlog, so a need a camcorder
Also i want to sing so i need it to have good sound.
And good visual, for video clips, and just generally vlogging.
It would also need a stand to come with it. And i want it to be affordable. And HD

Answer
Either Canon, Sony, or JVC but it depends on your budget, few camcorder if ant come with a stand thats an extra.

Audio is not fantastic on any camcorder, even $3000 ones, if you really need good quality audio then you would be better off getting an external mic,

But as for affordable it depends on what you mean by that.

What is the best camcorder buy for good amateur documentary?

Rodrigo N

If I buy the AG-DVC30 with the equipament, it will go almost $3000.

If I buy the DVX100b, with the same equipament (subtract the XLR adapter) it will cost $4500 with shipping.

The Sony DSR-PD170 with all equipaments (less the XLR adapter) goes $3900

All the equipament with the JVC GR-HD1, goes 2700, but somesay this camera sucks.

The sony DCR-VX2100, goes $3500 with all too.

The GL2 goes with all equipament almost $3300.

The acessories is UV filter, NTG-2 mic, XlR adapter if needs it, good XLR cable, extra better battery, cleaning cassete.

You know the better option?

Answer
Like I said, go with the GL2 or DVX100b (or actually the dvx100a or dvx100's are cheaper, but the B revision is newer, and overall better). And dont go with any internal HD cams (like the above mentioned JVC cam). Unless they are HDV mpeg-2 compression (which i doubt), theres a new type of technology called avchd which allows HD recording on DVD cams and HDD cams, but from what I've heard, they suck (compared to HDV), so stick with that. Hope this helps!

what causes blurry images when there is movement in my video?

tunesmith

I bought a cheap camcorder, its ok if I pan slowly or the subject moves slowly, but if there is action or I pan fast, then the video or subject (my cat) is blurred. I want crisp clear images whether its video or a still image from the video. what causes the blur? is it the type of digital media , memory stick, film, aperture? I am on a budget but I want to make sure the next thing I buy wont take blurry images when there is fast action. thank you
anyone new to something can't know it all, without asking questions. but anyway, I have seen stills taken from action shots and there is no blur, that's what I want, that effect.

Answer
"I want crisp clear images whether its video or a still image from the video."

Not gonna happen. Video is filmed with a 180 degree shutter principal. So half the time the film is being exposed. If you are shooting at 24fps that means that your effective shutter speed is about 1/48 of a second. at 29.9fps you are technically using a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second ... neither one of these shutter speeds are of any use for fast movement.

In video, it's not a big deal because the human brain is good at stitching moving images together so the blurriness is disappears as our brain processes the info but take a still from that and you have a blurry mess.

Taking still from a video is in no way, shape or form a good way to replace proper still photography. On top of the inherent problem with shutter speed (consider that if I am using a flash, I can still achieve a shutter speed of 1/200th and if I'm using the sun or powerfull hotlights, I can shoot a still at 1/4000th of a second), you have a problem whereas still from an HD video (1080p) is only equivalent to a 2MP shot.

1080X1920 = 2073600 / 1000000 = 2.07MP

"I have seen stills taken from action shots and there is no blur, that's what I want, that effect."
Do you have examples? Because I'm telling you, not gonna happen, especially not with low end consumer gear.

What does 2000 mAh en referring to a camcorder battery?

twhoodoo

Looking to buy a battery for my older Panasonic VHS-C camcorder. What does the mah refer to?
Thanks

Answer
mAh stands for "milli ampere hours", it is basically a measure of how long the battery can run before it needs to be charged again.

For example if you had a 4000 mAh battery it would last twice as long.

You can use any size mAh battery as a replacement in your camcorder.

Are there any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I've ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

Answer
Of course there are, just not many. Save for cameras with mechanical zoom rings (which obviously can't prevent the user from using the zoom during the video recording, so they allow it), though, most cameras with small optics use zooms electronically operated (with zoom in/out buttons, tipically), and for those, it's much rarer to find zoom-while-recording-enabled ones. The reason usually given by the manufacturer is that the motor drive that extends the zoom makes a noise that would be catched up by the microphone in the audio recording.

The most usual exceptions are cameras using âfolded opticsâ designs (mostly ultra-compact cameras, those with tiny lenses that don't extend outside the body when zooming), because those have somewhat quieter zoom mechanisms. Not all ultra-compact cameras allow video zooming, though: the Casio EX-V and Sony T ones do, while the Fujifilm Z series and Nikon Sxx series don't.

Done with theory, and into practical suggestions:
- The Casio EX-V line (EX-V7 and EX-V8)
- Panasonic TZ1 and TZ5 (but not the TZ2 or TZ3 models); TZ4, I don't know.
- Canon PowerShot S3 IS, S5 IS, TX1
- Sony H3, H5, and most (of not all) of the T series.

If you're in a budget, I'd suggest either the Casio EX-V7 or Panasonic TZ1, or some of the more modest Sony T series.

What features should be considered while buying a digital video recorder or camcorder?

goodboy

I want to buy one recorder because I am going for a LONG HOLIDAY. Whenever I flip through the magazines looking for a video camera, I notice several specifications like:

Digital Zoom
Optical Zoom
Mega pixel

What features are most important for tourism where we need good zoom, quality, nightmode & much more??

Answer
I would love to answer this question for you. As a tip from my Rome Vacation it is important to get really good quality to bring back good video for others to enjoy for the future. Take Notes because here is the LIST:

Optical Zoom: Real important because digital zoom is pure bogus.
Hard Drive (HDD): Tapes are VERY hard to work with. With a HDD camcorder you can record for hours.
A Good Brand: JVC, Sony, and Canon are the best. Not Teen-Tech, Vivitar, or Aiptek

These are the KEY FACTORS for looking at camcorders. As an amateur these things stand out the most.

What is the best Waterproof HD camera for the buck? I am going on a cruise and am in the pool often and i am looking for an HD video camera that is waterproof. I was very interested in the Kodak Play Sport that just came out. Its is only $150. My price range is below or around $200. I already have a sony tx1 that I use for other hd videos and pictures. So this is like a secondary "fun" camera that i can be rough with especially in the water. Thanks!

Answer
Get the Panasonic TS1.

You can see the kind of video it'll take from the link below.

p/s It uses AVCHD format -- which is okay for Windows 7 or latest Mac. But not okay if you have an old pc.

what are the best hd video cameras under $300 that record sports well in low light conditions?

jdl12321

i know that the $300 is not a lot for an hd video camera and that it won't be the greatest video quality ever, but i'm just a college kid so my funds are limited to say the least. i record tennis matches with my brother, and we usually play at night, as well as basketball games (during the day). any thoughts?

Answer
no consumer HD camera can record sports action except as a blur. that is because of the super high compression. MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.

the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

I am looking for a WATERPROOF HANDHELD CAMCORDER for a trip that I am going on. I need tips and advice for what to look for when buying the camcorder. It doesn't matter about cost, I just need to know the suitable quality for going on a vacation, where there is great quality of sound, good picture, can be used when snorkelling, good battery life, etc.

If anyone could give me tips, advice, or their knowledge from personal experiences on what to look for and what sort of brands are good or bad when buying them. Also websites of places I could buy one is good too. Any sort of information or websites where I can research more would be greatly appreciated too.

I would like the style of all of these to see but being waterproof.

ShortStuff

If you have, where did you go? What did you do? How was it? What did you pack? How did you record your memories (still camera, video, diary, etc)? Do you have any tips for someone preparing to go?

I am going on an 8 day trek in southern Spain. I am SOO excited!

Answer
I've gone on a couple. My first one was a week of riding cross country in County Galway, Ireland and it was an amazing trip. The horse I rode was a full-blooded Irish Draught mare who was probably the single best horse I've ever riden. The facilities of the riding center we were based at were wonderful and they took great care of us on the trek. I kept a journal documenting all the things we did and posted several pictures on line. You can find them on my website:

http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/ravensroost/ireland.html

My second trip was a combination lessons/trail treks in Mallorca, Spain. I very much enjoyed this trip also, riding through the beautiful farmland and along the beaches of the Mediterrainian. The lessons were excellent and really helped me with securing my seat better. I even took my first jump and had a dressage lesson on an Andalusian stallion. It was so much fun.

As for packing, nearly everything I brought was in the way of riding clothing. Boots, helmet, gloves, a few pairs of breeches, jacket, etc... Bring stuff that you can layer so you can deal with iffy weather and get a rain jacket. I also had a good pair of jeans, a few tops and a nice pair of heels for going out at night, and a bathing suit for Mallorca since the riding center had a pool. I would also make sure to pack insect repellant, a good sunscreen and invest in a good pair of sports sunglasses that don't bounce.

Before leaving for your trip, just make sure that you have all of your documents in order - you should be notified by the tour where your pickup will be. I would invest in an english-style saddle-bag which is great for holding cameras, bottles of water. There are some good ones here, and they are definately worth the money.

http://www.horsesdacor.com/HorsesDacor/catalog/Bags.shtml

You might also think about investing in a saddle cushion. We had one day in Ireland where we were in the saddle for almost seven hours and my backside was in serious pain by the time we were done. I was ready to tie a pillow to my butt!

Have a great trip!

can you use a coleman xtreme sports waterproof HD wearable helmet video camcorder to record normal videos?

Katie Fort

If I get this, can I use it to record normal videos, like of my friend singing and stuff for youtube?

Answer
The camcorder does not care what the subject is. Start recording and point the camera at the subject.

Video and audio quality may not be ideal. Just because the camera is being used to capture something other than sports stuff is not going to have the camera stop working...

Hi several years ago, HVR-Z1U was my main camera but since this one is too old and still need to use by film, I wanted to buy professional camcorder. I'm going to buy it in B&H but not sure which one is good choice. the price will be between $2000~3500. Can you show me the recent professional camcorder?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2|0

Answer
Film cameras us film. Once the film is exposed, , in a dark place, the film is removed from the camera and sent in a light-tight container for chemical processing. For editing, a splicer is used. Or, individual frames are scanned (one by on) and digitized for use in a computer editing system. Typically, film cameras do not record audio. Sound is recorded externally.

The Sony HVR-Z1 is a digital camcorder. It record high quality, low compression DV and HDV video to miniDV tape. It is a digital video camcorder. There is no film involved. The Z1 has a built-in mic and also XLR connectors for external mics. It has a 72mm diameter lens and a 3CCD imaging chip that is 1/3".

My definition of "professional camcorder":
Lens diameter 70mm or larger.
Imaging chip is 3CCD or 3CMOS, 1/3 inch or larger.
XLR audio inputs.
Your Z1 meets all these requirements.

In your price range, we have:
* Sony HDR-FX1000 (it is the prosumer sibling to the Z1; uses miniDV tape; has only a 3.5mm stereo audio-in connecter - add a BeachTek or juicedLink XLR adapter is needed).

* The Sony HVR-Z5 (replaced the Z1), PMW160, HXRNX5, all the NEX and NX series camcorders are outside your budget.

* The Canon XF300 series is outside your budget.

* The Panasonic AG-AC series camcorders that meet the above criteria are outside your budget.

* The JVC GY-HM600 might fit your budget.

I think you are better of sticking with the Z1 - unless it is broken.

Time to upgrade, but to what?

magnas

Hi,
I have been shooting videos for almost 4 years with the same camera, the sony HDR-SR12 but I came to the point where I want more control, more options.
The camera I am looking for is the panasonic gh3 or black magic pocket cinema camera.
The panasonic gh3 seems very promising with its ability to record in ALL-I and 72 Mbits mov file, but the sensor size is small and the color space is quite poor. (8 bits 4:2:0)
In the other hand, the black magic pocket cinema camera is very portable, is able to interchange lenses, can record on raw files, and can record with 13 dynamic range which is incredible for its price! Again, I am not sure how the 16 mm sensor will affect the overall image quality.
I am well aware that coming from my sony hdr sr12 camera it will be a huge step up, but I would like to make every bucks I have worth it.
I shoot videos mainly for narrative, but for the upcoming project I will do a documentary film.
Also, how about Nikons and Canons?
Lastly my budget is 1500$, but I could wait and save money if needed.
Thank you for your generous inputs.

Answer
I would suggest that you take a look at the Canon VIXIA HF G20. It has many features that rival much more expensive cameras. It's the top of the line consumer camcorder for 2013. Go here for a few reviews:
