What is the best Video Camera to use with iMovie HD and iMovie 08? I've seen many reviews on cameras that say they don't work on iMovie and Im trying to find a good video camera to buy please help (URGENT) (For Mac Users)

I've done several movies using iMovie '08 using my new JVC GR-D770. it works with iMovie HD '06 too.

I got it at best buy online, saved 20 bucks and got a free tripod and case.

It works wonderfully!

I've made some movies of my dog... and uploaded them to youtube! all inside iMovie '08.

PS the movies look better than they do on youtube.. they tend to mangle videos!

I want a good camcorder for YouTube. I will be using imovie on MacBook Pro to edit them. I read somewhere that some camcorders aren't compatible with macs. So what are some good camcorders

I've been editing video on Macs for many years.

Any camcorder with a DV/IEEE1394/DV/i.link/firewire camcorder works fine.

Any camcorder with a USB port that records very compressed AVCHD files to flash memory or hard disc drive (I've imported video from various Canon HS R, HF M and HF S series camcorder, Panasonic consumer AVCHD camcorders, Sony consumer AVCHD camcorders, JVC consumer camcorders and others).

I also have a Canon PowerShot AS3300is that provides video and stills into my Macs just fine.

Final Cut and some plug-ins are needed for higher end camcorders - like the Panasonics that record to DVCPro or DVCPro HD format; Sony Camcorders that recorder DVCAM, HDCAM and XDCAM format; and the Canons that record MXF files.

GoPro cams are fine. Basically, I have not yet encountered any camera that I could not get the video into my Macs for editing. Maybe a transcoder is needed. Having MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com and HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr takes care of that...

I take that back... the crappy DVD based camcorders that have not been made for several years were a pain because the slot loading DVD drives cannot deal with the small 8sm discs - so I got an inexpensive external LaCie drawer loading drive... but other than that...

The only thing I have found that is "not compatible with Macs" is the useless software that comes in the box. Since it is useless, it is irrelevant.

But if "not being compatible" is a problem, find the article you read and get a list from the author. Then stay away from those.

Is there any way to transfer video from a samsung sc-d382 min dv camcorder to my iMac without using iMovie 09?

I have a firewire 400 cable with a 400 to 800 adapter. My iMac is the 27in. version. I can record to iMovie 09 using the camcorder and firewire cable, but cannot send video from the camcorder to iMovie 09. Can I use a video coverter, Quicktime Pro, or other built-in app?

When you are moving DV-format video from the miniDV camcorder to the computer, the computer Imports - or Captures - the video. DV format video is compressed and the camcorder's processor does the decompression and the video is saved to the iMovie (MOV) file format.

You are correct, the miniDV tape based camcorder does not "send" the DV format video to the computer - the computer takes the video from the camcorder.

QuickTime Pro won't do what you want, either.

Final Cut (Express or Pro) will behave the same way iMovie does...

I am not aware of any application that will just stream the DV-format video data (no importing, no decompression) straight from the camcorder to the computer. This is not platform-spacific - the same is the case for Windows video editing for miniDV tape based camcorders, too. Importing is a real-time activity when working with miniDV tape.

The only way I know of to do what I *think* you need in order to do what you want is to record the DV format video straight to a specialized external hard drive - Focus Enhancements makes the FireStore series. This way, the DV forrmat video data is written directly to the FireStore drive when you connect the camcorder to the FireStore with a firewire cable. When video aquisition is complete, power everything down, connect the FireStore external drive to the iMac, power up, and work with the DV format files... Sony has a external video storage unit, too - but I don't know if it will work with your Samsung miniDV camcorder. These specialized external storage devices are not inexpensive...

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

why are my iMovie film clips out of sequence?

when I import video from my sony handycam digital disk camcorder into imovie, the film clips are always out of sequence. for example, when recording a basketball game, I get the clips showing up in imovie out of sequence from the actual game. is there something I can do to correct that?

I imported a video from my camcorder to imovie. The clips sync and the quality looks fine. Then, I convert it to a quicktime .mov so i can put it on youtube. The quality then turns bad in the quicktime version from file share. How can i improve my quality?

i think it is hard to convet video without quality Lossing.i recommend you using Aunsoft video converter ,it is so powerful on converting in my mind ,you can give a try .

Is there any way to transfer video from a Sony DVD Camcorder to IMovie?

"The Missing ManualâIMovie 6 and IDVD" states that they are incompatable. I am wondering if since this book was published they have created the necessary connection (something similar to Firewire) to now make it possible to load movies from this camera to my Mac.

We would really like to get our daughter's movies on our computer and be able to edit them in IMovie......Thank You

nj_nyc is correct - BUT only if your mac uses a drawer-loading optical drive.

If your Mac has a slot loading optical drive, NEVER put a miniDVD in that drive. You will end up breaking the drive and scratching the disc. You should either get an external drawer loading drive (like http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10014 )
OR
use the AV cables that came with the camcorder and get an analog/digital bridge from Canopus http://canopus.com/products/videoconversion.php and transfer they video over firewire.
