The files I have shot using a Panasonic 3CCD camcorder are huge! Is there anyway to shoot them in lo res/def or shrink the files?

Answer
gonna need that model number...

But if this is a camera with a hard drive, it is probably not possible to change them on the camera. After they are exported to the computer, sure. You can compress them all day.

If it is a newer camera, shooting in HD could create big files, yes. Not always. If it uses AVCHD, then it can actually compress the files smaller than SD! But when they are "uncompressed" for use in some editing systems, they can balloon up pretty huge.

But in general, you can fit a lot more SD footage on the camera than HD. And you should be able to set the camera to record in one mode or the other...

I have panasonic pv-gs120 3ccd camcorder. can anyone help with some advice (settings) on how to get the best quality out of this camcorder? also is there any way to make the footage look like hd?

Answer
The Panasonic PV-GS120 records in standard definition on miniDV tapes. There is no setting to make it better quality. When your videos are authored to DVD disks (as MPEG-2) it will be the same quality as you see when you rent or buy a commercially produced movie on DVD.

As far s making your videos look like HD, you can't but you can make your videos look more appeasing by doing the following: Plan your projects first, use a tripod, use ample lighting, have your talent speak clearly and loud enough (use external mic), do creative editing, add background music, etc., etc.
