Im not too fussy over picture quality.
I need a camera with a very good battery life, that turns on quickly and can take consecutive pictures one after the other quickly (not multi-flash), and a quick autofocus. I've had problems with past cameras where taking a picture far away(3m) from the subject with flash obscures the subject almost completely so the flash needs to have a good reach. My budget is from $100-$400.

what is a good digital camera for a beginning photographer, like for portraits?

i like to take pictures of models and sometimes landscapes. i would like a high quality but i just dont know what a great camera would be. i would like something in about the $600 range?
would a Nikon DSLR D40x work? or it that a bad camera?
