I am looking to buy a 12.3 megapixel Nikon D5000 dslr. The problem is it only shoots 720p video. I was wondering if I buy another lens if it might allow me to shoot higher resolution video.

Answer
No

Video only uses a portion of the 12 mp camera sensor.

In the case of HD video, 1280x720p uses less than 1 mp (you can do the math) Even Full HD (1920x1080p) only uses 2.2 mp

Here is what you need to know about shooting video using essentially a still camera with a video feature

What is a good camera for concert video?

Amy

So I go to a lot of concerts and I have YouTube channel just for my concert videos. Currently I have a Kodak EasyShare m590 which has 720p HD video, but I'm beginning not to really like that(battery is dying quicker due to having it for 3 years, a little grainy, sound is not that great). I still love it but I think it's time for an upgrade. The places I go to do not allow professional cameras(any thing with a detachable lens) but any sort of point & shoot or ultra zoom are fine.Does anyone know what would be a good concert camera(HD, with a good zoom length, great sound) and is relatively affordable? Thanks!

Answer
I would go with Sony HDR-CX200. It supports full 1080p.

5.3 megapixel and 30x optical zoom (Which are good for concert videos). It has really good review. :D
Also, it has back illuminated Exmor CMOS sensor for superb low-light video
