I run track, as a sprinter and occasionaly a hurdler. I also do long jump. My best time for a 100 dash is 13.9 but normally I can only get a 14.24. I really want to make it to regionals, and this news meet that our surrounding towns and us do.
I don't know how to improve. I have just given up cheerleading (Because of Drama, and we were called the fat sport, that you did because you sucked at everything else (My town Cheerleaders are hated because we aren't Bring It On Material) Any way, I have nothing to do to stay in shape, and get faster during the winter. I really can't run in the cold, because of this medical disorder I have with me being out in the cold for to long.
Any suggestions? Also is there anyway I can jump further in long jump, any special techniques you would care to share? Thank you!

Answer
Wow, big challenge here.

If you need to train indoors due to a medical condition, then adapt to what you have and work from there.

With that said, I hope you have a chance to train on an indoor track or large building. If not, hopefully a treadmill. You need endurance as you see how world-class sprinters win at the end of their races (male and female). The ones with better endurnace on top of their speed win.

So try to jog 2-3 miles a day with 4-5 mile son Saturday. Nothing on Sundays. On Wednesdays, due long drills like 150, 200, and 300 meters drills. This is to build you for spring track and not indoor meets (avoid those). You want to run at 75-80% effort. Not all out as this will lead you getting injured and peaking way too soon. Remember that off-season you are re-building and then building for the future (like tearing down an old house, and then laying down the foundation of a new house.)

If you are able to get outdoors to go for a run, try doing fartlek. This is "speed-bursts" for a set time/distance with a recovery period (not stopping but jogging). For your events, I would say 2-mile warm-up followed by 3 x 30-second burst (at 80% effort), 2 x 45-second-burst (70-75% effort) and 1x 1-minute burst (60% effort). Rest would be 1 minute after 30-second burst, 1:20 recover after 45-second burst, and 1:30 recovery after 1-minute burst.

Also, try running up indoor bleachers to develop your quads for good leg lift. If you cannot do this, try a stair-master, but take your hands on the hand-rails so your legs do all the work. Or you can try to run up stairs in a building.

Also, try to set up a video camera to see what your form looks like. Most young sprinters tend not to come straight out of the blocks. They take a step or 2 to the side befoire running down the track. If you find this to be true (where you are stepping to the side rather than forward), then set 4 chairs on the left and right of the track lane next to the start line. This way if you are stepping to the side, you will trip and fall down. But if you are coming straight out, you will continue going down the trick. (To all: Yes, I did this on one sprinter I worked with and trust me, he learned to come straight out of the blocks. Cruel method to teach but he didn't believe me he was doing this side-stepping until I set this up.)

For the hurdles, place a quarter on top of the hurdles and try to teach yourself to skim the hurdles without knocking the quarter off. Don't jump over the hurdle but try getting lower to the hurdle. You will have a lot of bruises to your knees, but what you want is to just skim over the hurdle.

Sorry to be so long, but without being there to guide/coach you and others, this is about the best I can suggest.

I want to buy a digital camera - any reccomendations?

Was thinking about Panasonic TZ7/zs3 & TZ5 but it's way too pricey. I want 3.5 minimum optical zoom, and megapixels doesn't really matter to me.Also a good macro would be good, and i want a variety of shooting modes and image stabilization.

Oh and one that has video and sound recording would be nice.

I am planning to upgrade from my Canon Powershot a570is. Not too pricey please!

Kodak EasyShare DX4530 5.0 Megapixel 3X Optical Zoom ...has everything you want and takes excellent pictures!! ..go look it up on Ebay ...I just bought a 2nd one for 25.00!!! I already have one but I wanted another one for work. My whole family (6 of us) have different camaras ...and when we compare photos taken at parties and such everyone is amazed at the beautiful sharp quality of this camara ..and they paid way more for there camaras!
One of my daughters just bought a "highly Recomended" camara (VERY EXPENSIVE) and was so dissapointed when she compared her photos next to mine. The Kodak's photos were sharper, more clear, brilliant, etc. This Camara is considered an older model but it works so great that I would buy 10 years from today if I needed another camara. Get One..your going to love it! YES IT HAS VIDEO WITH SOUND TOO! ..and many shooting options (Sports - Close ups - Landscape - Auto..etc.)
