Do artists owe their fans anything beyond putting out good albums and putting on good shows?

Q. Hi.
This whole Radiohead/Miley Cyrus craziness does put forth a question that I find interesting. What does a band/artist really owe their fans, and if they do owe their fans things like autographs and handshakes and pictures, etc. where is the line?

My only thing that I would ask anyone taking the stance of the artist being made or broken by the fans to consider and comment on is the concept that the fan gets to enjoy the records and the concerts that they pay for. A service paid for and provided. I think that without expanding on it that answer is... well, too easy.

Thanks. I'm really curious to see some perspectives on this. I'm pretty busy at the work today so I'm probably only going to be able to pop in periodically and read answers, may not have time to comment like I like to, but I really appreciate perspectives. Thanks.

And for anyone who is interested, here's a song of the day:
Beachwood Sparks - Canyon Ride (live acoustic, apparently on somebody's lawn)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIZo3UJAYgk
the mix isn't the best (what could you expect really, it appears to be a video camera mic for 3 guitars, 3 vocalists and a shaker), but I just think it's a cool video for the fact that they're just kind of sitting around playing in some random yard.

BQ: what'd you think?

Happy Wednesday everybody! Thanks in advance for your participation.
Also, this is a general question. You can use the Radiohead/Miley Cyrus thing as a model if you like, but I'm not terribly interesed in posts about how bratty Miley Cyrus is or how much Radiohead are a bunch of elitist jerks. It's about the bigger picture and the more universal question.
Thanks again.
Thanks a lot. There are some really great answers. I'm enjoying reading them a lot. Thanks. Like I said before, this is a topic that I find really interesting.
Once again, there are some really, really great answers and I really appreciate it. It's been a lot of good reading for me. That was a great tie in with MLB Rckts. A really, really good answer. Everybody else too. Keep them coming. Thanks again. I figure when I hit lunch I'll be able to put some cents in.
Thanks Dimesciple. I definitely appreciate your insights on it. It's nice for perspective that you have actually seen both sides in practice.

Good Morning Prof! :-)

If you really want to get technical with it, perhaps the artists donât owe the mere fan anything at all. Whether they put out good music, mediocre or bad, theyâre not in a situation where we as the fan are debt holders that expect them to make good on a loan. This is what gives the artists the freedom to put out whatever they want. And it works very well on the other side of the coin, too. We as fans donât owe Band X anything in return. We are under no legal obligation to purchase their work. However, this is where it gets interesting. You often hear bands say âweâd be nothing without you, the fansâ but seldom does it ring sincere. Rather itâs scripted BS that they feel obligated to say because everyone else does. However, that is the reality of the situation. A band could be putting forth the most mind-blowing amazing work of all time. And if there are no fans supporting the band, buying their music, and spreading the word, then exactly how well is that band doing? We can sit here and talk about doing things just for the mere love of the art but letâs face it, we all need to eat and pay rent. So when certain acts behave all petulant and snobbish where they act way too self-important to acknowledge their fans in a normal, painless and reasonable manner, I think that speaks volumes to me as the fan and not in a good way. This is a mere reality of life and itâs not just something pertaining to the music world. Something very near and dear to you, Major League Baseball was on the verge of dire financial ruin back in 1994. There were two factors involved. Obviously the strike that cancelled the World Series was huge. But the other part was that the fans were completely turned off by the craptastic attitudes of the typical MLB player. In order to undo the damage it took a massive PR onslaught, where the players were specifically instructed to make themselves more approachable and to INTERACT with the fans. Because when you get right down to it, without fans in the seats, there will be ZERO professional sports. Hard to be called a pro when you arenât getting paid.

Earlier this week, I received a compilation CD of some dark wave music from Australia. I was thrilled to death that considering the distance involved it came damn fast. But then I got a little surprise along with the CD; a signed postcard from the band Angelspit, personally addressing me by name and thanking me for my purchase. They certainly didnât have to do that nor was I expecting it. However, I couldnât help but think how super cool of them that was. That was a nice personal touch and as a fan I will remember that. That being said, I canât help but think about mega super-group Radiohead, who turned the city of Chicago into a bunch of drooling retards over Lollapalooza week. Without those crazed fans, Radiohead would just be another footnote in the Trouser Press of alternative rock. The fact this band that has been lifted into rarified Earth didnât have the time to acknowledge a fan for all of maybe 30 seconds absolutely sucks. Granted both parties likely behaved in a regrettable fashion. But one fact remains the same. Miley Cyrus is a child. Children often do things they regret, we all have been there at one time or another. I would expect a band of FULLY GROWN adults like Radiohead not to act in such a petulant and arrogant manner. They clearly know better with all their âworldly wisdomâ and life experience. And simply from a PR standpoint, it was an ill-advised move.

Truth be told, Iâm not one of these people that even likes talking to bands or hounding for autographs after the shows, just not my style. Mostly because I would prefer not to know any more of the personal shortcomings of my heroes than need be.
