With some research I'm finding it particularly difficult to find a camcorder to purchase that will take a mic jack. I was looking at the Sony range, like the SX43, but all the Sonys seem to only allow inbuilt mics. I want to interview people with a cheaper end camcorder that will give reasonable to good youtube quality final clips. Any suggestions?
Answer
The low-end Sony's won't have a mic jack - I think they first appear (with manual audio control) on the HDR-CX500 series. If the Sony camcorder has a Sony proprietary "Active Interface Shoe" (AIS), you *could* get an adapter for external mics

On the other hand, check the Canon FS (standard definition) and HF series (high definition) camcorders. Many do have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio-in jack. The missing part is the lack of manual audio control - BEFORE you buy, down load and read through the camcorder's manual to be sure it has the capabilities you want... THEN buy. I think manual audio control starts with the HF M series. The HF S series has manual audio control for sure.
If the lighting is good, ANY camcorder can provide "good enough" quality for YouTube. Then you can always just use an audio field recorder (Zoom H1, Edirol, Tascam, Marantz, etc). Just import the audio from the field recorder when you import the video form the camcorder for editing. Sync the audio - then mute the audio captured by the camcorder.

Answer
No.
You have a choice:
1) Increase your budget to include camcorders with a mic jack
or
2) Record the audio separately with a "field recorder" like a Zoom H1, H2 or H4. When the video is being edited, import the audio from the field recorder, synch the audio with the video, mute the audio captured by the camcorder...
