I had an old canon UCV1 Hi 8mm camcorder. I was told nobody makes adapters for the tapes and i would really like to have them transfered on to dvd. Does Best Buy do this kind of stuff?

Answer
I don't know about Best Buy, but there are ways you can do this on your own. Perhaps one of these will work for you:

1) Connect the camcorder to the inputs of a DVD recorder, and make your transfer that way.

2) Use a USB (OK) or FireWire (better) device from Pinnacle/Avid, or Canopus, or some others, and convert the video signal to a digital signal so you can get the video onto a computer, then use an editing program to do any trimming and compressing down for DVD.

3) Find a local video store that will provide this service for you.

4) Use an online service where you can send in the tapes, and they'll transfer the tapes to DVD, or if you prefer, a hard drive for editing.

how can I copy 8mm tapes to dvd since my camcorder is broken?

Have a Sony 8mm camcorder and it won't play back my tapes. Is there another way I can play back the tapes?

Answer
Find an outside service to make the transfer. You can still edit the images from the DVD and someone with the right equipment can make the transfer faster and easier than you can, especially without a working camera. Your only other options are 1) buying/borrowing another camera that can play 8mm tapes, or 2) buying/borrowing a standalone tape player with a USB output to your computer. That is assuming you have a computer and software to accept images and make DVDs.
