I'm looking for a dvd camcorder but don't know which one has the best picture quality. I am basically using it just for vacation memories and maybe soccer games and random stuff so I don't really need one that is over the top...but wants one with very good picture quality!

There is no such thing as a DVD camcorder with good video... especially if you want to edit the video.

What is the best video camera to purchase?

Lisa

I am not on a budget and am going on vacation. I want something that has the best quality, hard drive, battery life, and what not. I want to film like scenery and live soccer.

Answer
Hey.

Look at the Canon VIXIA HV40. It records in HD & SD & uses miniDV tapes, wihch will work best to capture your video into FC. It has 10x zoom, which is fine.
When you use zoom on a camcorder, it requires a very steady tripod, static placement, etc. It doesn't take but a tiny bit of movement for a video to look shaky (wind, nervous hands, etc).

The HV40 sells new for around $650 (US).\

What kind of digital camera should I get?

best sport video camera 2012
on ... Mandeville, the official mascot for the London 2012 Paralympic Games
best sport video camera 2012 image

Anonymous.

I have a 2009 panosonic lumix (digital not HD - forget type though), but it's kind of broken because the lens won't open fully. I think it's time to get a new camera since I haven't gotten one since early 2010. I plan to be a photographer in the future (as a side job). I am also going to work at a camp and plan to take pictures there. I don't feel like bringing my big EOS digital 2008 cannon. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Price range no more than $250. I would prefer less than $200, but if it would really suite me, then I'd go for it.
2. I'm not quite sure what I like. I know there's no such thing as a total all around digital point and shoot because I've been doing some research. I'd probably be doing photo shoots, but I also want one that would take like pictures of people doing sports since I'm in the horse world and like to take pictures of people horse riding and stuff. I guess I'd mainly focus on pets and kids and stuff.
3. I know optical zoom. I have photoshop CS5, so I don't need the pixels taken up like that.
4. I don't need a video recording. Would be nice, but eh I'd rather save my money and just use my phone or something.
5. I have a 2010 mac book pro laptop, so I'd like the card to be able to read/format on that.
6. If I print out images, it doesn't need to be more than 8X10 photo paper printed pictures. I mean I'd use my bigger camera for larger photos, so yeah. I'll probably just post the pictures online/email them if anything so won't need them really printed big.
7. I'd like to have a camera that has a decent battery life. At camp, the power went out for 8 days last year. I was able to take pictures the whole time and took over 300 pictures and still had battery life. I wouldn't mind having a long battery life like that camera.
8. My hand does shake a tad sometimes, so I'd prefer a not SOOO sensitive camera.
9. I'd like a camera that has the ability for manual settings and as well as auto or/and preset settings.
10. I'd prefer like Cannon, Nikon, Panasonic (nicer brands rather than the not so trustworthy brands because I know how to use those types of cameras).

Which camera(s) do you think would best suite me?

Answer
http://keerok-photography.blogspot.com/2012/09/cannon-is-weapon.html

1. Price is right smack in your budget.
2. Zoom is enough on this camera for taking horses and their riders. This is also good for shots of pets, kids and stuff which are near you or relatively out of reach. Just remember to shoot under lots of light. Indoors, use flash.
3. Optical zoom is not extravagant but not wanting either. Don't worry. What it lacks in zoom, it makes up with optical quality.
4. This has HD video which you can completely ignore until you find a lustful desire for it later.
5. As a standard feature, all cameras follow the FAT filesystem. With memory cards 4GB and larger, FAT32 is imposed. Mac computers can recognize FAT/FAT32 without problems. You can even format the memory card to FAT/FAT32 using your Mac (no matter how many pro photographers advice you not to). It will work.
6. This is a 16MP camera. You can print to 11x16" as long as exposure quality is gloriously good enough.
7. Four AA batteries. The best would be Energizer Lithium but you can also get rechargeable Ni-MH. Just make sure they're at least 2100 mAh for very long lasting shooting. In the event you run out, just slide over to the nearest store for some Alkaline AA's. That's the beauty of it.
8. Oh, this camera's sensitive. Apart from excellent optical glass quality, it has a triple-shake-reduction technology so don't worry about shaky hands. You're covered on that one.
9. Manual exposure? Manual focus? No problem. It's not as intuitive as a dSLR. This is after all just a bridge but, if you want manual, this has manual.
10. Since you can't spell Canon correctly, I'll take it you don't know that this brand is older than them and just a tad younger than Nikon. There was a time in fact when all cameras sold by all other brands (nice and not so trustworthy) were lesser than that sold by this brand alone. So there.

If you were made dictator of the UK, what changes would you make?

TR

Also would you be benevolent or tyrannical?

Answer
A mix of benevolent & tyrannical, depending on the situation......

Changes...........
1) Put John Redwood & Jesse Norman (current Conservative MP's) in charge of the economy, as they seem to know what they're talking about better than George Osborne & the Bank of England (and before that New Labour) seem to....
http://johnredwoodsdiary.com/2012/09/13/abandon-the-deficit-reduction-plan/
http://conservativehome.blogs.com/platform/jesse_norman/

2) Put fat-cat militant Union bosses in their place
http://www.taxpayersalliance.com/waste/2011/07/union-bosses-touch-members-unite-boss-derek-simpsons-500k-payoff-met-shock-anger.html

3) Stop wasting money on useless winfarms

4) Invest in power generated via Shale Gas + Thorium based nuclear
http://www.alltheinterweb.co.uk/search.pl?Terms=Thorium

5) Have the Maglev train system proposed @ http://www.500kmh.com/ built + build / re-open certain stretches of conventional railway lines to boost capacity & access. http://allthesocialnet.com/blogs/entry/There-s-more-than-one-way-to-improve-a-railway-system

6) Build a new airport in the Thames Estuary or nearby to relieve pressure on Heathrow
http://allthesocialnet.com/blogs/entry/London-South-East-England-Airport-Expansion

7) Ensure the Police are alot more assertive if there's any more riots like last year.... instead of poncing around with video cameras to capture evidence for later, send them in with Sting Grenades, Tear Gas & Water cannons (with additional back-up from Royal Marines, SAS & SBS Commandoes armed with batons, if needed).

8) Officially raise the motorway speedlimit to 75mph

9) Have the Police concentrate more on cracking down on stupid driving rather than fast driving.

10) Crackdown on cyclists who make a nuisance of themselves - jumping red lights, riding on the pavement, etc......... why do teens these days often spend most their time riding on the pavement, then ride on the side of the road facing the traffic when there's someone walking along the pavement coming the other way? (if it feels like there's alot more of them getting killed on the roads these days, that's probably why).

11) Tighten up on Foreign Aid spending, basing it on "need" instead of "need to make the elite feel good about themselves, even though it's proved not to work & creates corruption, and doesn't help the people it's supposed to help, and still being paid to countries who have their own Space & Nuclear programs".
http://www.conservativechitchat.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1345211535

12) Correct BBC Political bias towards the left to make them more "centre-right", and return F1 100% completely to the BBC......... and stick the fuckwit who was jizzing themselves over "what a good deal it was for the fans" when it was announced they were shafting us... stick them in the same prison camp as the fat-cat union bosses.

13) Repeal anti-smoking laws, and let businesses decide if they want to be smoking or non-smoking

14) Lower the total tax on Petrol & Diesel to 48% instead of the current 60%

15) Make Tax & Benefits simpler so it doesn't confuse everyone (including the government employees who are supposed to deal with tax & benefits).

16) Cap income tax at 35% for anyone earning over £15,000 a year (and 12% for anyone earning under £24,000).

17) Fix the road tax system so that currently £0 rated vehicles like the Toyota Pious pay a minimum £50 a year to use the roads, and streamline the categories and cap the maximum payable to £300 a year (instead of £460 like it'd currently cost you to tax a Range Rover Sport).

18) Seriously crackdown on Scrap metal thieves........... those stealing war memorial plaques sentenced to 30yrs hard labour.
Those caught stealing infrastructure like bits of the National Electricity grid, or bits of the railway system to be charged of Terrorism, and sentenced to death by firing squad.

19) Beef-up the military if / when funds permit........ including the building of a couple of extra smaller Aircraft carriers to supplement the 2 big 'uns currently under construction + a few extra Type-45 destroyers

ACB11180

I'm thinking about buying a GoPro camera, but am not sure about it, so I have some questions.

Is it worth buying the HD, or is the Standard version of good enough quality?

I know it's small, but is it just the right size for me to hold?

Does it really have to be mounted to anything?

Please give me any advice/feedback about any of the GoPro cameras you have.

Thanks!

Answer
I think yes they are good ones GoPro HD Motorsports HERO Camera
The camera has four modes - video (in several resolutions), still pictures, self-timer still pictures, and interval photos (pictures every few seconds). The lens gives a tremendously wide wild view which is nice for HD's 9:16. It will shoot 1080p, 960p 720p (at 30 and 60 frames per second), and 480 (at 60 frames per second) line resolutions. It uses standard SDHC memory cards and has an internal battery which recharges via a USB cable. The recorded audio is very good both inside and outside of the motor sports waterproof case that came with my kit.

what is the difference between the go pro hd hero 2 outdoor edition , and the hd hero naked?

Josh

so i have an hd hero 2 outdoor edition but i am thinking about getting the 3d mount..... i dont want to buy another edition, motorsports , outdoor etc... i just want another camera ..... so is the naked edition the same thing just without the mounts ..... or is it the first edition of the hd hero and a piece of shit with lower video quality ?

Answer
They are different cameras with different sensors, lenses, etc. For 3D to work, you need like cameras or the resulting video will not overlap correctly, etc. So, if you want to shoot 3D with your current GoPro HD HERO2, you'll need to get another HD HERO2. Make sense? Maybe find out when they'll be at an event near your home town, sometimes they have stuff at events for a good deal.

i want to know if the review of ppl who used it for at least few months, the cons and pros
i know that Samsung has better zoom, and Fujifilm has a view finder but its not that important for me , iam more concerned with good quality that would last for a good period of time , idont wanna buy a camera that breaks down after few months

Answer
Hi "eman" and welcome to Y!A Camcorders:

You appear to be in Egypt, so I don't know what search engine results you've been getting, but there are some professional reviews on CNet and Engadget, and elsewhere, that you'd find helpful. DP Review (http://dpreview.com) is another good site for digital camera reviews.

One tip: you are asking about two still-cameras (photos not videos) in the Camcorders section. The Y!A Cameras section is where most of the photo camera users hang out. If you're mainly wanting to shoot video, neither is really the best choice for you.

I know a lot of everyday camera users now want just one "gadget" for shooting both photos and videos, but "point & shoot" cameras (or even "bridge cameras" like these two models you are asking about) are a compromise when it comes to video.

My personal opinion, brand-wise, is that Fujifilm (the "Japanese Kodak") has been making cameras a lot longer than Samsung, and Fuji is generally a better choice. Samsung entered the camera market in 1995 when they bought German camera company Rollei, but isn't as well-known for quality lenses like Fuji is. I do not like the Samsung quality in their cellphone construction (owned several).

Here are some reviews, so you can make your own decision:
Fuji S2980 "Ephotozine review" (UK): http://www.ephotozine.com/article/fujifilm-finepix-s2980-digital-camera-review-20407
Samsung WB100 "Engadget review" with many user comments (US): http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/samsung-brings-out-wb100-camera-with-26x-lens/
Samsung WB150F "Ephotozine review" (only similar model they reviewed - UK): http://www.ephotozine.com/article/samsung-wb150f-ultra-zoom-review-18632
Samsung & Fuji "CNet side-by-side comparison" WB100 & two S4000-series & a Nikon Coolpix (similar prices): http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/samsung-wb100-red/4540-6501_7-35430119-4.html

hope this helps,

I want to record things to upload to Youtube, but to do so I need a GOOD camcorder. I have looked online, but I am not sure what one to get. It can't be over $500. I want to record things live traveling. Say if I went to France, I want to record my stay there. The places I see and things like that. I need it to have good quality. Good video taking, memory space, and I am not super picky about zoom because I probably won't use it a whole lot. I just need a good camcorder. Panasonic makes good ones according to the ratings they get, but one video said not to because the newer ones and the older ones are almost the same. This is very important to me, so please help me! THANK YOU A LOT

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

jmreiss7

i have a small camcorder-panasonic pv gs90- and i use it for skateboarding/snowboarding, i want to build a hand for it, like with a piece of scape metal or sumthing, any ideas?

Answer
The camcorder probably has a threaded hole on the bottom, already, for a 1/4-20 bolt, such as a tripod would have. Maybe you could bolt the camera to your helmet, then your hands would be free.

A short 1/4-20 bolt and maybe a wingnut is all you need, probably about 50 cents at a hardware store.

video camera high quality for low price?

I need to find a fairly inexpensive digital video camera.

I will use it to compile sports tape, so it must take good quality video.
I will also use it for 2 school video projects which, mean i need to be able to upload video to the school computers for editing.

What is the best digital video camera i can get for a fairly low price?

Answer
Ok.. given school, you need to be sure you're getting a camcorder that can work with the school computers. Most will, but for example, if the class isn't video-oriented, they may not have Firewire, which is the standard for all tape-based camcoder transfers to computer.

Without offering a price limit, this is a hard question to in return offer specifics. You can pay serious green for a very good quality camcorder... you can pay under $100 for a "Flip" style web-camcoder. There are dozens of cheap camcorders like this: cheap non-zoom lens, horrible low-light capability, weird recording formats. I can recommend the Flip only because the software is good.. the video is still poor, but they're easy to use. Aipitek, DXP, and many other Chinese flash-card camcorders have similar quality, but no decent software support.

The best deal I've seen lately for a high-def camcoder was a Hitachi Blu-Ray based model (far from the best HD camcorder, but not too bad in bright sunlight) for $299.. but that's over. Usually, you're going to pay $500+ for a high-def camcorder.

Regular consumer camcorders, more likely to be in the $200-$400 range... there are dozens of options, and I don't know what you're looking for well enough to suggest anything. Look at http://www.camcorderinfo.com for reviews and suggestions.

You can get really good standard-def video these days in most modern still photo cameras. Any 640x480 mode is likely to rival the 720x480 mode you get in all standard-def camcorders. My daughter is in a "Communications Academy" in High School, they do video projects all the time. While I've offered a few video camera to her for these things, most of the video she shoots in on her Pentax pocket digital camera (last Christmas' present). I paid about $100 for that camera.

And if this is just for two projects.. borrow something. Even if you think you're going on in video work, rushing to buy something for just one project is usually a formula for disappointment.

What is the #1 camera to use for daily vlogging and somewhat amature videoing?

Chase

I am an AVID Youtuber and for the last few months, I have been using my Droid RAZR HD to record all my videos. It has HD Camera capabilities but its just not hitting the spot. I am trying to get software to edit videos a whole lot better than I was doing with using Movie Maker on Windows.I just am trying to find a REALLY nice camera or DSLR or Video Camera that would be perfect besides my phone.

Answer
hey, i just posted a similar question. it looks like we are in the same boat, we have HD cameras that are actually not quite hd, i found this review on pcmag that may help you find your perfect camera. good luck, http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2355707,00.asp

my one is an hd logitec H900, stay away from it, its blurry and looks bad indoors
and also stay away from expensive dslr cameras, they take amazing photos but videos are misleading, i have a very expensive nikon srl with full hd, but it delivers another blurry and choppy quality video that looks really big on screen, and that is what most cameras are doing out there.. someone just mentioned to me to look for a sports camera, they seem to do the trick but they are not full hd, im starting to look at 720p (fills up half of a youtube page with a sharp video) maybe that is what we both need.

What is the best make of camcorders?

best camcorder ever
 on ... VHS
best camcorder ever image

Liberty

I'm wanting to buy a camcorder but I'm not very experienced in this type of things. From experience, what was the best make of camcorder you had ever come across?

Answer
Hi Liberty, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since you say you are new to this area of camcorders, and from reading your other Y!A Question on this topic from yesterday, there really isn't one "best" brand for you, without more information on what sort of things or situations in which you need to use the camcorder. [Referencing your Y!A discussion at: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ath0ytOPHqvNrbSy1JfVkZnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120101123304AA29Y6w ]

Also, your personal budget limit (how much you wish to spend on this initial purchase) is an important factor. There are HD camcorders ranging from under-$100 USD to thousands of dollars.

A wide choice of features and lenses also makes a difference. (Filming indoors, close-up, for example, versus outdoors sports or wildlife from a long-distance will make a big difference in the lens and features you might want.)

Sony and Panasonic are the two main brands the pro's choose, and tend to be more expensive, even with their consumer models; Canon and JVC are other brands with professional and consumer models, but with a bit more-affordable pricing. All are reliable, and have a wide choices of changeable batteries with long charge-life. You might stay away from cheaper models and brands without changeable batteries. When you are travelling or vacationing and can't swap batteries, it's a major problem when a dead battery won't let you capture a memory.

If you told me you were a snow-skier or snowboarder, or ATV/dunebuggy enthusiast, then I'd recommend a totally different brand (like a GoPro) that's small & ruggedly made for those activities.

Also what brand computer(s) you own and whether you plan to do a lot of editing and/or uploading to sites like YouTube and Facebook, are important to know. Many consumer camcorders are very "user friendly" with one-touch upload/share buttons that make web-compatible video uploads easy. Some camcorder brands work better with PCs than with Macs.

Feel free to use the Y!A "Action Bar" to add Additional Details to this Question, so we can give you a better Answer.

hope this helps,

How can I determine what Digital Zoom Lense to purchase?

rpdbe5

I have a Cannon Digital Rebel XT, and need a digital zoom lense that will work for taking indoor swim meets. What are the points I should consider when purchasing a lense.

Answer
The requirements you have spelled out comes under sports photography. Most people do not realize it is not the lens but how and were it's used. It's unlikely that you will be aloud to get very close to the athletes and the lighting environment is going to be bad to say the least. If you want to focus in on one athlete you will need a long focal length lens , say, 400mm to 600mm. On the other hand, if you want a photograph of the entire venue, a wide angle lens is what is called for, 18mm to 28mm. I have yet to meet a lens that zooms from 18mm to 600mm. But if one does exist, the price will that of a small new car.
The best advice I can offer is: RENT a 400.mm f5.6 lens and a tripod with a ball head that can hold it up without collapsing. A fixed focal length wide angle lens around 24mm will do for your panorama photographs of the entire pool. Now for the bad news,
your automatic light meter in the camera will be completely confused by the bright reflections off the water surface and underexpose your photographs, you will need to figure out an exposure for neutral grey using the fastest shutter speed you can get away with. How do i give the water effect ?

Sid Flare

How do I take a picture in which each water drop could be seen in a picture ? Slr camera or digital both ?

Answer
Your question sounds very odd.... "the water effect"?

I am guessing you might be asking about how to freeze action. That's when the shutter speed is so fast that you "freeze" movements such as individual water drops in a water fall..... is that what you mean?

In that case, all you need is fast shutter speed, which is possible with ANY camera, just as long as there is plenty of light around. DSLRs give you a lot more scope with their fast lenses and higher ISOs, but it can be done with a P&S, too. Of course, it can be done with SLRs (i.e. film), as well.

However, if you're trying to catch action such as in sports, then the P&S's shutter lag would drive you crazy.

Hello, ever since I was a kid I always wanted to direct films. I am a natural storyteller, but when looking at universities/colleges for application requirements I saw that you need a portfolio of work. Unfortunately I haven't directed much because I really don't have the means to. What is a good model of Camera I can use to film movies? Thanks!

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Not to mention, but the computer you upload your HD files to jas to have at least a 1 GB video card and a separate Audio card that can support Direct X 9 technology, you normal every day computer has massive troubles with HD video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a MIC jack. You will need a Firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a Firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. I am currently trying to keep track of the Bassmaster Tournaments. I see that they are three days of fishing. like other sports, do they have LIVE coverage on TV. all i could find was cameras on the boats with no sound. or does it just come on Sunday morning with a recap of it all! i really want to know and what channel does it come on---ESPN2?? is if live coverage or just recap on sunday?

Answer
It has to be all tape delay.Unless there is such a thing as wireless transmission of massively huge video/audio files, which I doubt. I suppose the cameramen could radio the weight of each fish caught to keep the scoreboard up to date.

What is the best smartphone that runs on Verizon Wireless?

TheRAT

I would use this to browse the web...a lot! So there would need to be a great display on it as well as good moblie web performance. I would also need a good keyboard and program to edit text (word, ect.) documents. Another thing I would need is a good video/mp3 player. I have an iPod right now so it would have to have all the functionality of that. A camera is not really essential, but I could use it. It needs to be a phone, duh. I would also need good email and AIM use of it, as well as text messenging. It would have to run on Verizon Wireless, because its the best carrier in my area. I was looking at a Blackberry Pearl, or Blackberry World, which seemed nice...but I still need to look around more. I know this is a lot to ask, but I basically need the most portable version of a computer/phone as it gets.

Answer
Despite this phone's diminutive size, critics say the Windows-based Motorola Q still sports a large, 2.4-inch display, an ample, easy-to-use keyboard, a 1.3-megapixel camera and an integrated MP3 and video player. However, there are no word processing or notepad applications, so you'll need to buy additional software if you intend to do any document editing. Battery life is also a shortcoming according to professional and user reviews. This Verizon smartphone uses the fastest data network, Verizon's EV-DO, for quick downloads.

Blackberry Curve is also amazing.

The significant advantage I would say Q holds over Curve is that, you can buy an additional software from mobile Office companies which enables you to edit documents. It also gives you stereo sound output with wireless stereo headsets. You can watch an entire movie on it and internet browsing as i told you is fastest on it because of EV-DO.

It also costs much lower than Blackberry.

Go for it dude.

Be sure to research the camcorder model that the sweepstakes is trying to sell to you to ensure that you're getting a good value. A lot of times, some sweepstakes or promotions list a much higher price for an inferior product to make it look more attractive.

As far as the Nikon vs Cannon debate w/ DSLR cameras under $1000, I've found favor in the Nikon videos that I have seen so far. I plan to shoot some music videos. I'm going to buy Vegas Pro 12 for video editing. Can anybody vouch for the Nikon d7000 with an 18 105mm lens for music videos? And is learning proficiency in Vegas Pro 12 very hard?

What kind of camera do I need to shoot a music video?

Elly Mercu

I'm looking for a high quality video camera to shoot rock music videos with for my band. I was hoping to get something that also shoots high quality stills for the album cover and the inside album art.

Is it wise to get a two in one camera for what I want to do? Or would it be more reasonable (cheaper) to get two separate cameras?

What would something like this cost? I don't really know anything about cameras so I don't know what a reasonable price is for something like this.

What do I look for in a camera that makes high quality stills and videos?
I appreciate all the answers I have gotten so far, but they all sound like professional jargon to me. I think I made it very clear that I don't know alot about cameras. Can someone please give me an answer in plain English?

Answer
It depends on your budget and the quality you are looking for.

In my opinion, camcorders are designed to be camcorders - still image capture is a "convenience feature". Digital still cameras - including dSLRs were designed to capture stills and video+audio capture is a "convenience feature".

Recording loud audio generally means some sort of manual audio gain control is needed. If that is not used, then the camera's/camcorder's automatic audio gain control may not be able o keep up. This results in recording muddy audio with static (when the audio peaks).

And lets say video is being recorded during a song - but a still is desired. The video capture device is busy... Having a camcorder and a digital still image capture device seems preferable.

Camcorders at the low end have small lenses and imaging chips. They cannot record decent video under low light conditions. as camcorders' prices increase, the lens and imaging chip get larger and go from having no manual audio gain control to a very simple "normal" or "mic attenuator" ( for loud audio) setting - and finally, a manual thumbwheel audio gain control on the outside of the camcorder.

If you opt for the less expensive camcorder with small lens and imaging chip, then expect to pay for lighting. Bigger lens and imaging chip usually means less lighting will work.

Pocket camcorders and point & shoot cameras go up to about $200.
Entry level consumer cams up to about $500.
Mid range consumer cams and dSLRs (perhaps no lens - it depends) up to about $900
High end consumer cams up to about $1,300
"Prosumer" cams up to about $2,800
Pro grade cams up to about ~$80,000

Add in a tripod or two, cases, cables, video lights, stands, batteries from the camcorder manufacturer, lights, mics... It would be easy to spend $4,000 without trying very hard... Then you may need a computer upgrade for editing and buy a video editor (the bundled ones are not very good).

The last "music video" I shot was with my Sony HDR-FX1. Stills were captured by a Canon PowerShot AS3300.

Okay so I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S780. It takes pretty decent pictures but when I take videos at concerts, the sound is horrible. I was looking at some live footage on YouTube and some people have cameras that have really good quality sound. I don't want those beastly video cameras, just a digital camera. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing skateboarding, action sports; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $320 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

Need a digital camera with fast response time?

Q. I am a high school yearbook adviser, and I need to buy a new camera (or two) for my staff to use. We can't spend a lot of money, but I need a camera which will take pictures quickly. I'm not sure what the terminology is, but I need to be able to push the button and have the picture take as soon as possible. We have to take action sports shots, etc., so we don't want blurry photos. Any suggestions on specific models, or even what I should ask/look for when I go shopping, would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Ha ha, on the yearbook staff too, and I just bought this camera for it. What a coincidence.
So, enough of that, I got the canon SD 750 about a week ago, and I love it compared to the previous cameras that I have owned. I bought it because of the high review rates for the price of $299. One of the many great features is it take 1 second to turn on, and your ready to take a picture, so you can almost instintly take a picture, once you know your subject. It also has great features like color accent mode or color switch mode. You can also use a sd card and it can hold well over 1,000 pics with a 2 gig SD card. It can aso take well over 20min of video with the same card. This card can cost about $45. The camera itself is really small and thin, for all the features it has. You can download pics to your computer by using mini usb cable included with the camera. Overall I think this camera would be perfect for tourism, sport events, events, and protraits.

My husband and I are expecting a baby in 8 weeks and are looking into purchasing a video camera. So many options out there right now. We need something more on the simple side. We were thinking about a Sony, but not sure..any suggestions? Hard Disk or DVD style?

Answer
You should buy either a hdd or a mini dv tape recorder. Alot of people say mini dv brings good quality. But so does HDD, hard disk drive. Dvd isn't great because it doesn't record for a long time and that a special moment might be missed because the dvd ran out of space. Furthermore, Hdd is better because you don't want to be dealing with messy tapes and an hour recording for each tape. Hdd has good quality also. I suggest you also buy sony camcorders because they last long and they do have good quality. Also get standard defintion because high defintion isn't great, you can't watch it on normal dvd players and your computer must pack some punch or a good processor to handle hd. So go with standard defintion.
For sony, I would recommend you the dcr-sr300 and i have it for about a week and its great. If you live in New york city, you can go to J and R world, or order online at jrworld because its alot cheaper. about 100 dollars cheaper. Also, its the same thing as circuit city and best buy. To me circuit city and bestbuy in stores suck because their return policy isn't that great, 15% they keep when you decide to return the camcorder. Also, their modals tend to be old and aren't that great. So either order online with bestbuy, etc other companies or find a camcorder near a store near you. Don't go to those store that aren't well knowned, such as those stupid stores on the corner selling electronics.

Addition: go to cnet.com and check the reviews and peoples' opinion before buying a camcorder. Maybe another brand than sony might be better. Camcorders varies but I think Sony is one of the best out there.

Hoped I help you and have a safe pregnancy with your wonderful baby! =)
